Notes: A number of isolator–semiconductor nanocrystal composites exhibit quantum confinement effects and nonlinear optical properties. In this work, the formation and growth of CdTe and CdTe0.9S0.1 nanocrystals immersed in a borosilicate glass host matrix were studied by small-angle x-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation during in situ annealing in the 560–580 °C temperature range. The values of the average radii of the CdTe nanocrystals determined by using Guinier plots for different annealing times (20–30 A(ring)) agree with those obtained from optical absorption spectroscopy measurements. The nanocrystal size distribution depends on the thermal history and composition of the samples. The existence of other structural heterogeneities having an average size of several hundred ångstroms was detected. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We studied confinement effects in CdTe quantum dots by means of photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. We show that by changing the detection energy we can resolve the spectrum of quantum dots of different sizes inside their much broader size distribution in CdTe-doped glass. The spectra obtained show several well-resolved lines. There is excellent agreement between the photoluminescence excitation spectra peak energies and calculations of the confined energy transitions based on a modified multiband envelope function model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present experimental evidences of quantum confinement in borosilicate glasses with a new microcrystallite CdTexS1−x semiconductor. The microcrystallite sizes are controlled by the heat-treatment time and temperature. Transmission electron microscopy measurements show the microcrystallites average diameters near 55 A(ring) for the sample treated for the longest time. We observe a red shift from 570 to 640 nm in the absorption and photoluminescence spectra as the size increases. These shifts agree with the expected quantum-confined energies, varying from 0.80 to 0.60 eV. The absorption spectra also show a second feature which can be assigned to the second quantum-confined transition.

Notes: We studied the confinement effects on the phonon spectra of CdTe quantum dots by means of resonant Raman scattering measurements. The spectra show clearly longitudinal optical phonons, surface phonons and some of their overtone combinations. We show that the scattering due to surface phonons increases as the quantum dot size decreases. The results are obtained by tuning the laser excitation energy to resonance for quantum dots of different sizes inside the broad size distribution in CdTe-doped glasses. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pb- and Te-doped borosilicate glasses are transformed by appropriate heat treatment into a composite material consisting of a vitreous matrix in which semiconductor PbTe nanocrystals are embedded. This composite exhibits interesting non-linear optical properties in the infrared region, in the range 10–20 000 Å. The shape and size distribution of the nanocrystals and the kinetics of their growth were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) during in situ isothermal treatment at 923 K. The experimental results indicate that nanocrystals are nearly spherical and have an average radius increasing from 16 to 33 Å after 2 h at 923 K, the relative size dispersion being time-invariant and approximately equal to 8%. This investigation demonstrates that the kinetics of nanocrystal growth are governed by the classic mechanism of atomic diffusion. The radius of nanocrystals, deduced by applying the simple Efros & Efros [Sov. Phys. Semicond. (1982), 16, 772–775] model using the energy values corresponding to the exciton peaks of optical absorption spectra, does not agree with the average radius determined by SAXS.

Notes: Abstract The preparation and characterization of the 1:1 inclusion compound of rhodium(II) α-methyl cinnamate in β-cyclodextrin is reported. Evidence of inclusion was obtained from X-ray powder diffraction results, Raman, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic studies and thermal analysis. Given the potential antitumor activity of the rhodium(II) carboxylate and its virtual insolubility in water, its inclusion in β-cyclodextrin opens the possibility for its transference to the aqueous phase.

Notes: Abstract The photoelectrochemical properties of sol–gel Nb2O5 coatings have been discussed in terms of their surface morphology. Niobium chloroalkoxide solution was prepared and thin films were deposited by dip-coating on the indium–tin oxide conductor glass. Structural, optical and electro-properties of amorphous and crystalline sol–gel coatings have been determined. Powders were prepared by the hydrolysis of amorphous niobium and were characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance. These measurements indicated which changes were introduced in the photoelectrical behaviour of the semiconductor due to its crystalline structure. The absorption measurements showed an absorption band in the ultraviolet range associated with the electronic transfer O2-→Nb5+ whose energy gap was around 3.3 eV. The photoelectrochemical measurements for the coatings were done in lithium perclorate and were used to determine the flat band potential, Vbp, and the electron diffusion length, L. The influence of particle sizes in the charge-transfer process at the semiconductor–electrolyte interface was discussed according to the models of Gartner and Sodergren. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract Niobophosphate glasses (P2O5-PbO-Nb2O5-K2O-XFe2O3), were studied using thermally stimulated depolarization currents and Mössbauer spectroscopy in samples of different iron concentrations, and were subjected to oxidation and reduction processes. The use of both techniques provided new information about the distribution of iron and niobium between tetrahedral and octahedral sites.

Notes: Abstract We study the TiO2-BaO-ZnO-B2O3 glass system, where the ZnO and B2O3 compositions were constant and the ratio TiO2/BaO was varied from 0.87 to 1.76. A super kanthal resistance furnace was used to melt the compounds inside an alumina crucible, at 1200 °C, for 10 min. After melting, the glasses were poured out into steel moulds and rapidly cooled by quenching. The glasses obtained were homogeneous, bubble free and transparent. They were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-VIS spectroscopy, dilatometry, density and linear refractive index. An infrared “cut off” caused by the composition influence was found in both IR and UV-vis spectra. From dilatometry T d and T g were verified as being anomalous. The linear thermal expansion coefficient α presented an anomalous behaviour in relation to TiO2 concentrations. The density and linear refractive index increased with increasing TiO2/BaO ratio arriving at their peak value of TiO2/BaO=1.5 and then decreasing. The dependence of softening point T d on the ratio TiO2/BaO exhibited the same behaviour. It is suggested that Ti4+ plays a dual part in the glass system, assuming a predominantly tetrahedral coordination in the low titania region and a predominantly octahedral coordination in the high titania region. With a heat treatment of the glass around 600 °C, we observed a rapid change of refractive index with increasing temperature.

Notes: Abstract Some amine derivatives were intercalated into the van der Waals gap of layered compound FeOCl. These compounds were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The isomer shift and the quadrupole splitting are characteristic of the high-spin ferric iron. The magnetic structure of FeOCl was affected by intercalation of amine molecules in the interlayer region of FeOCl. The magnetic hyperfine field in the low temperature is larger in the intercalates than it is in unintercalated FeOCl. The sign of the EFG tensor at the iron atom is dependent of the type of amine intercalated.
