Ethylene reacts even at -70°C with the methyltitanium(IV)-compounds CH3TiCl3, CH3Ti(O-iso-C3H7)Cl2, CH3Ti(O-tert-C4H9)Cl2 and yields alkyltitanium(IV)-compounds with alkyl rests from C3 to C33. With CH3TiCI3 this growth-reaction is accompanied by a displacement reaction yielding α-olefins.Systems with titanium(III) organic compounds, obtained by reduction of the titanium(IV)-compounds with Hg[Si(CH3)3]2 for the first time, polymerize ethylene under the same conditions quickly, even in small concentrations, to high molecular polyethylenes.

Äthylen reagiert bereits bei -70°C mit den Methyltitan(IV)-verbindungen CH3TiCl3, CH3Ti(O-iso-C3H7)Cl2 und CH3Ti(O-tert-C4H9)Cl2 zu Alkyltitan(IV)-verbindungen mit Alkylresten von C3 bis C33. Beim CH3TiCl3 ist diese Aufbaureaktion noch von einer Verdrängungsreaktion begleitet, die α-Olefine liefert.Systeme mit Methyltitan(III)-verbindungen (durch Reduktion der entsprechenden Titan(IV)-verbindungen mit Hg[Si(CH3)3]2 erstmalig erhalten) polymerisieren Äthylen dagegen unter den gleichen Bedingungen, selbst in kleinen Katalysatorkonzentrationen, rasch zu hochmolekularen Polyäthylenen.
