    Description: Many birds in breeding seasons engage in vigorous dawn singing that often turns to a prominent chorus. We examined dawn chorus variation of avian assemblages in a tropical montane forest in Taiwan and tested the hypothesis that onset sequence is affected by eye sizes, foraging heights, and diet of birds. Chorus onset and duration varied between sampling months, but generally peaked in the prime breeding season. Overall dawn chorus length increased with, but mean duration per species was negatively correlated with, species richness. The inter-correlation among trait variables in phylogenetic independent contrasts was calculated and examined. Both foraging height and relative eye size were selected as positively explanatory factors, but no dietary effects were detected, for chorus onsets. Dawn singing onsets also tended to delay as decreasing log (eye sizes) that, however, was not selected with enough explanatory power. The positive relationship of chorus onsets versus relative eye sizes contradicts our prediction, yet the negative correlation of relative eye sizes with log (eye sizes) indicates an allometric constraint on eye sizes along with increasing body sizes. Lowerlayer species initiated singing earlier than upper-layer species, which complies with the positive correlation of onsets with foraging heights and supports our prediction. This pattern may be condition-specific and more likely occurs in forests lacking a sufficient canopy height and layering and a distinct light difference among forest layers. Foraging heights were additionally found negatively correlated with canopy coverage and slightly positively correlated with ground coverage of perches. Our results concord that foraging height is a relevant factor as eye size in determining the onset and sequence of dawn chorus, yet, suggest that forest settings and vegetation structure may likely complicate the prediction.

    Notes: The growth mechanism of the Bi-2223 phase was studied using multifilamentary Ag/Bi-2223 tapes manufactured by the powder-in-tube method. X-ray powder diffraction was performed to analyze the developments of Bi-2201, Bi-2212, and Bi-2223 phases during sintering periods at high temperatures. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate the growth mechanism of the 2223 phase. TEM images indicated that 2201 and Ca2CuO3 crystals come together to form platelets of 2223. The structural phase transformation established a structural frame of the 2223 crystal. There were some vacant defects retaining in the established 2223 crystal cells at copper and oxygen sites after the phase transformation, and the Cu/O compound at high temperatures would diffuse into 2223 cells and occupy the corresponding vacancies to complete the 2223 crystal structure. The present work provides an evidence for growing the 2223 phase from the 2201 phase and Ca2CuO3 in the samples studied. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The mean final weight of juvenile greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina fed a single daily meal during the scotophase was lower than that of groups fed continuously or fed twelve, six, three or one meal during the photophase. Final weight did not differ among the latter five groups. Size variation in all groups of fish decreased during the course of the trial over 120 days. Groups assigned to a higher frequency (and hence a longer total daily meal duration) of daily meals were less active during mealtime. A distinct food anticipatory effect was observed in the groups of fish receiving a single daily meal during either photophase or scotophase, and also developed before at least one meal in the group of fish fed three meals per day.

    Notes: Latency of food anticipatory activity (FAA) in greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina was about 21 days. Fish fed at meal sizes of 0·25 and 0·5%W day−1 exhibited FAA under meal durations of 1, 3 and 7 h. Fish fed at 1·5%W day−1 showed FAA only at a meal duration of 1 h. At each meal size, FAA was shorter and lower the longer the duration of the meal. The mean durations of FAA and post-feeding activity were correlated positively (r=0·87; P〈0·01; n=7). FAA persisted for 〈3 days during food deprivation. It is suggested that greenback flounder was capable of evaluating the energetic and temporal impacts of a single daily meal.

    Notes: The effect of electron irradiation on the optical properties of GaN material with various electrical conductivity (i.e., n type, compensated, and p type) is studied in detail by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Electron irradiation with a dose 〈1017 cm−2 is found to have a minor effect on photoluminescence, indicating a high radiation resistance of GaN. For higher doses, two major effects of electron irradiation on PL properties can be distinguished, i.e., radiation-induced quenching of the PL, likely caused by a radiation-induced formation of competing recombination channels, and radiation-induced formation/activation of new optically active centers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The role of light–dark (LD) cycles and food deprivation in the regulation of diel feeding rhythms in greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina (Günther 1862) was examined. A computerized monitoring system was developed to record uneaten pellets, and food intake was estimated as the difference between pellets presented and those uneaten. Three groups of five fish each (75–281 g) were exposed sequentially to the LD cycles: LD 12:12, LD 12:12 (scotophase advanced by 9 h), LD 6:18, DD, LD 6:6:6:6, LL and LD 12:12 (return to the initial cycle). Illumination was 120 lux at the water surface (complete darkness at scotophase), and water temperature was 15 ± 1 °C. Fish fed mainly during the light hours under LD 12:12 and resynchronized to the scotophase-advanced LD 12:12 regime after about 12 h. Feeding started at the onset of light and extended to the early scotophase under LD 6:18. A circadian feeding rhythm was detected in fish under DD and LD 6:6:6:6 regimes. Under the LL regime, two groups of fish displayed arrhythmic feeding patterns and did not resynchronize to LD 12:12 for at least 13 days. In contrast, the third group of fish exhibited a circadian feeding rhythm under the LL regime and immediately re-entrained to LD 12:12. Fish were deprived of food for a single period of 26–57 h once feeding patterns had been established under LD 12:12, LD 12 : 12 (scotophase advanced by 9 h) and DD regimes, and feed delivery was resumed during the scotophase or subjective night; the timing of feeding rhythms was shifted by the reintroduction of feed, but progressively resynchronized to the LD cycles. The results suggest that the greenback flounder is a diurnal feeder, that a LD 12:12 cycle is a potent environmental cue to entrain circadian feeding rhythms, and that a biological clock is involved in the timing of feeding.

    Notes: Deep level defects and their role in carrier recombination processes in electron-irradiated 3C SiC have been studied by photoluminescence (PL) and optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). An isotropic ODMR spectrum, with a g value of 2.0061±0.0002 and an effective electron spin S=1/2, is observed in irradiated 3C SiC films. From the spectral dependence studies of the ODMR signal, the defect is shown to be a deep level center related to a radiation-induced PL band with a zero-phonon line at 1.121 eV. Due to the competition between different carrier recombination channels, this ODMR spectrum can also be observed as a decrease of any other PL emissions from the sample, indicating its dominant role in recombination processes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
