Notes: Summary In order to test the additional efficacy of the combination of a beta blocker (penbutolol 40 mg single dose) with molsidomine (2 mg single dose), a double blind cross-over trial was performed in 30 patients with stable angina pectoris. Stress tests were done before and 1 h after the beta blocker alone and the combination therapy. Some training effect could be detected on comparing results from the first and second days. Combined therapy showed a better response of resting systolic arterial pressure, resting and maximal diastolic pressure, heart rate gain (from rest to maximal effort) and particularly in the angina severity score. All of these variables changed significantly in comparison to the beta blocker alone, 46 out of 60 post-drug ergometric studies were negative; of the 14 positive tests, 11 followed the beta blocker and only 3 the combined therapy. The combination of a preload reducer molsidomine and a beta blocker may be adequate for patients only partially compensated or with cardiomegaly and/or a depressed ejection fraction.

Notes: Pineapple, Ananas comosus L. Merr., cultivars differing in resistance to fusariose were examined for the phytotoxic effect of culture nitrate (CF), and fusaric acid (FA) isolated from Fusarium subglutinans (Wollew & Reinking) Nelson, Toussoun & Marasas. The possibility of using these substances on F1 hybrids as selection agents for resistance was also evaluated. The phytotoxic effect of these substances was assessed in pineapple plantlets from tissue culture by placing them on wounded leaf segments. The resistance level of the F1 hybrids and cultivars under natural conditions was measured in greenhouse field tests. The susceptible cultivars proved to be the most sensitive in each test, whereas resistant cultivars showed resistance to CF. FA affected all the cultivars independently of the degree of resistance of the cultivars The presence of other metabolites in CF was responsible for the screening effect between the varieties. Using CF as selection criteria allowed the selection of resistant plants with behaviour quite similar to plants where the fungus itself was used as the selection agent.

Notes: Daily changes in photoprotective mechanisms were studied in sun leaves of Quercus suber L., Quercus ilex L., Olea europaea L. and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. trees during the summer in Portugal. Even though stomatal closure explained most of the diurnal variation in carbon assimilation along the summer, a decline in the photochemical yield of photosystem II (F′v/F′m) also occurred, as a result of an excess of intercepted solar radiation when carbon assimilation is limited by stomatal closure due to high vapour pressure deficits and/or soil water deficits. These changes were accompanied by the conversion of violaxanthin to antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin which were correlated with thermal dissipation of excess photon energy. In spite of a common general response, differences between species were observed -Olea europaea, which is a slow-growing tree, had the lowest net photosynthetic rates, the highest proportion of carotenoids in relation to chlorophyll and the highest rates of de-epoxidation of violaxanthin. This enabled a large thermal dissipation of the excess intercepted radiation but led to rather small values of light utilisation for photochemistry (ca 20%). In contrast, in E. globulus, a fast-growing tree, photosynthetic rates were the highest, thermal dissipation of absorbed radiation the lowest and maximal values of light utilisation for photochemistry reached ca 50%. The two Quercus species exhibited an intermediate response. A high degree of co-ordination is apparent between stomatal behaviour, photosynthetic capacity and photoprotection mechanisms.

Description: Fish aggregating devices (FADs) are deployed to aggregate fish over a limited area to improve fish catch. Fish enhancing devices (FEDs), which are FADs deployed in no-fishing areas, are fast gaining popularity as a fisheries management tool in the western Pacific. Yet, the impacts of utilizing FADs and FEDs are not yet well understood. In this work, we used a mean-field model to assess the effects of utilizing FADs and FEDs on stock biomass and catch. Our results indicate that using FADs enhances catch per boat when total fishing pressure is low, but can exacerbate fishery collapse when fishing effort is high. On the other hand, a FED-based system can increase the resistance of the fishery to collapse. A FED-based fishery may thus serve as pelagic marine protected areas and/or refugia. In a quota-based system, where fishing time is tied to catch quota, a phase transition occurs: both catch and biomass abruptly shift to low levels without warning. Deploying FADs to act as FEDs in a high quota fishery can prevent this phase transition resulting to a stabilizing effect.
