Description: To resolve the mechanisms that switch competition to cooperation is key to understanding biological organization. This is particularly relevant for intrasexual competition, which often leads to males harming females. Recent theory proposes that kin selection may modulate female harm by relaxing competition among male relatives. Here we experimentally manipulate the relatedness of groups of male Drosophila melanogaster competing over females to demonstrate that, as expected, within-group relatedness inhibits male competition and female harm. Females exposed to groups of three brothers unrelated to the female had higher lifetime reproductive success and slower reproductive ageing compared to females exposed to groups of three males unrelated to each other. Triplets of brothers also fought less with each other, courted females less intensively and lived longer than triplets of unrelated males. However, associations among brothers may be vulnerable to invasion by minorities of unrelated males: when two brothers were matched with an unrelated male, the unrelated male sired on average twice as many offspring as either brother. These results demonstrate that relatedness can profoundly affect fitness through its modulation of intrasexual competition, as flies plastically adjust sexual behaviour in a manner consistent with kin-selection theory.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Carazo, Pau -- Tan, Cedric K W -- Allen, Felicity -- Wigby, Stuart -- Pizzari, Tommaso -- Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- England -- Nature. 2014 Jan 30;505(7485):672-5. doi: 10.1038/nature12949. Description: Energies, Vol. 11, Pages 2324: Function Value-Based Multi-Objective Optimisation of Reheating Furnace Operations Using Hooke-Jeeves Algorithm Energies doi: 10.3390/en11092324 Authors: Bo Gao Chunsheng Wang Yukun Hu C. K. Tan Paul Alun Roach Liz Varga Improved thermal efficiency in energy-intensive metal-reheating furnaces has attracted much attention recently in efforts to reduce both fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions. Thermal efficiency of these furnaces has improved in recent years (through the installation of regenerative or recuperative burners), and improved refractory insulation. However, further improvements can still be achieved through setting up reference values for the optimal set-point temperatures of the furnaces. Having a reasonable expression of objective function is of particular importance in such optimisation. This paper presents a function value-based multi-objective optimisation where the objective functions, which address such concerns as discharge temperature, temperature uniformity, and specific fuel consumption, are dependent on each other. Hooke-Jeeves direct search algorithm (HJDSA) was used to minimise the objective functions under a series of production rates. The optimised set-point temperatures were further used to construct an artificial neural network (ANN) of set-point temperature in each control zone. The constructed artificial neural networks have the potential to be incorporated into a more advanced control solution to update the set-point temperatures when the reheating furnace encounters a production rate change. The results suggest that the optimised set-point temperatures can highly improve heating accuracy, which is less than 1 °C from the desired discharge temperature.

Description: Class-D audio amplifiers convert an audio signal into a high-frequency square wave whose switching times are modulated according to that audio signal. Thus, they operate using so-called pulse-width modulation. When the high-frequency components of the output square wave are removed by filtering, the remaining lower frequency components can reproduce the audio signal with very little distortion. This low distortion, coupled to the high efficiency of class-D amplifiers, is responsible for the increasing use of these devices in a wide variety of applications. However, to date there has been very little predictive mathematical modelling of those class-D amplifiers that employ negative feedback, as is usually the case in practice. Here, we derive and investigate a mathematical model for a novel design of the output stage for a class-D audio amplifier, which employs negative feedback to remove the effects of power supply noise on the amplifier's performance.

Notes: A rapid, reproducible method is described for extracting and comparing levels of the ether-soluble fish androgen 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) in blood serum, muscle tissue and surface mucus. Because widely different volumes of extract were recovered after centrifugation from the three sources, it was important to express androgen levels as pg 11-KT/mg of total soluble protein (TSP). For six male and four female sexually-staged freshwater Koi (Cyprinus carpio), the method yielded similar pg 11-KT/mg TSP ratios in blood serum and extracts of muscle tissue and surface mucus, with the strongest correlation between blood serum and surface mucus. While male Koi were distinguishable from females based on the magnitude of 11-KT levels, reproductive stage and gonadosomatic index levels were not correlated with the 11-KT levels of either sex. Similar pg 11-KT/mg TSP ratios were also found for autologous muscle tissue and surface mucus extracts of 37 captured and sexed wild marine fishes representing seven genera. However, high 11-KT levels were not restricted to mature males. Collectively, results suggest that surface mucus collection (followed by 11-KT assay) is a useful alternative to more invasive methods of determining systemic hormone levels in fish. Without knowledge of seasonal variation in levels of this and other sex hormones, however, reliance on 11-KT levels alone may lead to spurious identification of gender, let alone reproductive stage.
