    Description: We used bioinformatic approaches to identify a total of 276 G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) from the Anopheles gambiae genome. These include GPCRs that are likely to play roles in pathways affecting almost every aspect of the mosquito's life cycle. Seventy-nine candidate odorant receptors were characterized for tissue expression and, along with 76 putative gustatory receptors, for their molecular evolution relative to Drosophila melanogaster.     Description: The African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, is specialized for rapid completion of development and reproduction. A vertebrate blood meal is required for egg production, and multiple feedings subsequently allow transmission of malaria parasites, Plasmodium spp. Regulatory peptides from 35 genes annotated from the A. gambiae genome likely coordinate these and other physiological processes. Plasmodium parasites may affect actions of newly identified insulin-like peptides, which coordinate growth and reproduction of its vector, A. gambiae, as in Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, and mammals.     Description: We present a draft sequence of the genome of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector for yellow fever and dengue fever, which at approximately 1376 million base pairs is about 5 times the size of the genome of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae. Nearly 50% of the Ae. aegypti genome consists of transposable elements. These contribute to a factor of approximately 4 to 6 increase in average gene length and in sizes of intergenic regions relative to An. gambiae and Drosophila melanogaster. Nonetheless, chromosomal synteny is generally maintained among all three insects, although conservation of orthologous gene order is higher (by a factor of approximately 2) between the mosquito species than between either of them and the fruit fly.     Notes: Abstract Calcite/opal deposits (COD) at Yucca Mountain were studied with respect to their regional and field geology, petrology and petrography, chemistry and isotopic geochemistry, and fluid inclusions. They were also compared with true pedogenic deposits (TPD), groundwater spring deposits (GSD), and calcite vein deposits (CVD) in the subsurface. Some of the data are equivocal and can support either a hypogene or pedogenic origin for these deposits. However, Sr-, C-, and O-isotope, fluid inclusion, and other data favor a hypogene interpretation. A hypothesis that may account for all currently available data is that the COD precipitated from warm, CO2-rich water that episodically upwelled along faults during the Pleistocene, and which, upon reaching the surface, flowed downslope within existing alluvial, colluvial, eluvial, or soil deposits. Being formed near, or on, the topographic surface, the COD acquired characteristics of pedogenic deposits. This subject relates to the suitability of Yucca Mountain as a high-level nuclear waste site.

    Notes: The third-order optical nonlinearity χ(3) of two novel guest-host polymers has been measured. The polymers consisted of nickel dithiolene guest molecules in a polymethylmethacrylate host and were prepared as cast or spun films. The optical nonlinearity was measured by degenerate four-wave-mixing experiments at a wavelength of 1.06 μm using 100-ps laser pulses. χ(3) coefficients of up to 10−17 m2/V2 were observed, corresponding to nonlinear refractive index n2 of up to 10−8 cm2/kW with a damage threshold (approximately-greater-than)1 GW/cm2.

    Notes: The third-order optical nonlinearity χ(3), linear absorption coefficient α, and the two-photon absorption coefficient β of two nickel dithiolene complexes are reported. The nonlinearities were measured at 1064 nm using 100 ps pulses. Molecular nonlinearities 103 times those of carbon disulphide were observed. Two figures of merit were calculated from the data Δnsat/αλ=5 and n2/2βλ(approximately-greater-than)2, where α and β are the linear and two-photon absorption coefficients and n2 the nonlinear refractive index. These figures are compatible with those required for simple all-optical switching devices.

    Notes: Abstract The macrophage-like cell line, P388D1, was exposed to dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL)-coated respirable quartz and kaolin, and the disappearance of the DPL was monitored for up to 9 days. The coating was removed rapidly at first (about 50% in the first 3 days) and then more slowly over the remaining 6 days, until about 30% remained on day 9. The rate of DPL digestion was independent of the type of dust and the amount of coated dust within the cell, indicating the existence of an extracellular phospholipase activity. This extracellular phospholipase activity was partially characterized. It was sensitive to temperatures above 56°C, the presence of EDTA, the action of the proteases trypsin and proteinase K, and pH, being active at pH 7 but not at pH 5. This is consistent with reports in the leterature of the existence of an extralysosomal phospholipase which is active at pH 7 and dependent on the presence of divalent metal ions. There was a dust-dependent difference in the extracellular rate of DPL digestion from quartz and kaolin. The coating was removed more slowly from the kaolin than it was from quartz. The removal of the DPL coating seen in the presence of cells was presumably due to both an intracellular and an extracellular phospholipase.

    Notes: Multiple internal reflection infrared spectroscopy (MIR) was used to study surface degradation in commercial and laboratory prepared plasticized PVC samples. Samples were subjected to accelerated (UV exposure) and natural weathering. Ultraviolet-exposed samples show peak formation at 3200 cm-1 (OH), and 1400cm-1(CH bend), as well as increased absorption at 1720 cm-1 (CO). Outdoor-exposed samples show essentially similar changes, but the variation in peak ratio shows large variations of a random nature; it has been proposed that rainfall has a major influence on surface plasticizer concentration.
