Abstract:
Notes:
Summary Various types of whirlwinds with nearly vertical axis are discussed, starting from the view-point, that these “weather systems” originate from “differential heating”. Dust-devils, fire-tornadoes and cumulus-windspouts develop as a result of an extra heating in the centre. It is suggested, that tornadoes and other cumulonimbus-windspouts are mainly a result of the strong cooling of the air in their environment, which suggestion is supported by material gathered from a systematic study of 295 descriptions of windspouts and tornadoes, and by the results of an investigation of a recent heavy windspout over the Netherlands. Objections against the theories on the formation of tornadoes and other cumulonimbuswindspouts ofWegener, Koschmieder, Showalter, Fulks andTepper are brought forward.
