Description: The modeling and analysis of the dynamics of complex systems often requires to employ non-Markovian stochastic processes. While there is a clear and well-established mathematical definition for non-Markovianity in the case of classical systems, the extension to the quantum regime recently caused a vivid debate, leading to many different proposals for the characterization and quantification of memory effects in the dynamics of open quantum systems. Here, we derive a mathematical representation for the non-Markovianity measure based on the exchange of information between the open system and its environment, which reveals the locality and universality of non-Markovianity in the quantum state space and substantially simplifies its numerical and experimental determination. We further illustrate the application of this representation by means of an all-optical experiment which allows the measurement of the degree of memory effects in a photonic quantum process with high accuracy. Description: Functional receptive fields of neurons in sensory cortices undergo progressive refinement during development. Such refinement may be attributed to the pruning of non-optimal excitatory inputs, reshaping of the excitatory tuning profile through modifying the strengths of individual inputs, or strengthening of cortical inhibition. These models have not been directly tested because of the technical difficulties in assaying the spatiotemporal patterns of functional synaptic inputs during development. Here we apply in vivo whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings to the recipient layer 4 neurons in the rat primary auditory cortex (A1) to determine the developmental changes in the frequency-intensity tonal receptive fields (TRFs) of their excitatory and inhibitory inputs. Surprisingly, we observe co-tuned excitation and inhibition immediately after the onset of hearing, suggesting that a tripartite thalamocortical circuit with relatively strong feedforward inhibition is formed independently of auditory experience. The frequency ranges of tone-driven excitatory and inhibitory inputs first expand within a few days of the onset of hearing and then persist into adulthood. The latter phase is accompanied by a sharpening of the excitatory but not inhibitory frequency tuning profile, which results in relatively broader inhibitory tuning in adult A1 neurons. Thus the development of cortical synaptic TRFs after the onset of hearing is marked by a slight breakdown of previously formed excitation-inhibition balance. Our results suggest that functional refinement of cortical TRFs does not require a selective pruning of inputs, but may depend more on a fine adjustment of excitatory input strengths.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2909826/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2909826/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sun, Yujiao J -- Wu, Guangying K -- Liu, Bao-Hua -- Li, Pingyang -- Zhou, Mu -- Xiao, Zhongju -- Tao, Huizhong W -- Zhang, Li I -- EY018718/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- EY019049/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- R01 DC008983/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R01 DC008983-01/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R01 DC008983-02/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R01 DC008983-03/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R01 DC008983-04/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R01 EY019049/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- R01 EY019049-02/EY/NEI NIH HHS/ -- R01DC008983/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R03 DC006814/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R03 DC006814-01A1/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R03 DC006814-02/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R03 DC006814-03/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R21 DC008588/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R21 DC008588-01/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R21 DC008588-02/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- R21DC008588/DC/NIDCD NIH HHS/ -- UL1 RR025755/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- England -- Nature. 2010 Jun 17;465(7300):927-31. doi: 10.1038/nature09079.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 90089, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20559386" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Dise Arbeit untersucht die Bestandteile der Spektralbereichsmethode, nämlich Fouriertransformation, Momentenmethode und Parsevalschen Satz.
Notes: Contents This paper examines the constituents of the spectral domain method, namely Fourier transformation, moment method and Parseval's theorem. By using the theorems regarding the asymptotic expansion of Fourier integrals proposed in a previous paper, edge condition equivalent in the spectral domain is deduced directly. Some waveguide structures are discussed as application examples of these results. It is also indicated that, for edge configurations, the scalar product procedure in the space as well as in the Fourier transform domain may be incorrect in the conventional sense and that an applicable version of Parseval's therorem is needed for such cases. A version of this sort is given. Some general properties of the method are discussed.

Notes: Contents The behavior of electromagnetic fields near a twisted edge and near a conical vertex in inhomogeneous medium is considered, both starting from the conditon that the energy density must be integrable over any finite domain. Differential equations of Sturm-Liouville type are then set up, which, together with relevant boundary conditions, determine the eigenvalues and accordingly the field behavior. Static fields are shown to have the same behavior in the neighborhood of such geometrical singularities. Media with piecewise constant permeability and permittivity are discussed as application examples of the concept of “impedance” or “admittance” for solving the associated eigenvalue problems.

Notes: Contents Based upon the differential equations governing the edge behavior of electromagnetic as well as static fields set up in a previous paper, the case of joining of magnetodielectric wedges in the absence of a conductor wedge is considered. The periodic boundary value problem is solved by matrix method. By making direct use of the unimodularity property of the matrices, characteristic equations for eigenvalues are derived easily. A necessary condition for finite fields near the edge is obtained for an arbitrary numberN of wedges, which is convenient in form for application purposes. Examples for designing suitable edge configurations to avoid singular fields will be discussed in the following Part 2.

Notes: Contents In this Part applications of the results of Part 1 to practical design of modern electrical and electronic devices are considered. It is shown that for the case ofN=2 only the rounding of sharp wedges can avoid field singularity. For the case ofN=3, a chart is proposed for the design of suitable configarations near the edge. Geometrical properties concerning the design chart and design procedure are discussed in detail. Slight deviations from the designed configuration within some range are shown to be allowable also in strictly mathematical sense. A concrete design example is worked out. Further examples forN=4,5,6 are given as illustration of general applicability of the results to more complicated configurations.
