Notes: Abstract  In a newly cultivated sandy soil, sugar beet haulms composted by highly effective cellulose-decomposing microorganisms (Trichoderma viride NRC6 or Streptomyces aureofaciens NRC22) were evaluated as organic manure for tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum L. cv. Supermarmment). The treatments were as follows: (1) control with NPK, (2) farmyard manure (FYM), (3) uninoculated compost, (4) compost inoculated with Glomus sp. NRC212, (5) compost produced by T. viride NRC6, (6) compost produced by S. aureofaciens NRC22. The organic amendments differed in their effects on total microbial counts in the rhizosphere of tomato plants. However, the amendment of soil with compost produced by highly effective cellulose-decomposing microorganisms or compost inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi decreased the proliferation of the total bacteria in the rhizosphere of tomato plants compared with FYM or compost. The application of compost produced by T. viride NRC6 or S. aureofaciens NRC22 enriched the rhizosphere with fungi or Streptomyces more than the other manure treatments. FYM and compost enhanced both spore production and the percentage of mycorrhizal root infection of tomato plants as compared with the NPK treatment, while compost produced by T. viride NRC6 or S. aureofaciens NRC22 reduced both the mycorrhizal spore numbers and the percentage of mycorrhizal root infection as compared with the NPK treatment. However, the application of FYM or compost reduced the incidence of root rot by 8% and 32%, respectively, as compared with the NPK treatment. The use of T. viride NRC6 or S. aureofaciens NRC22 as cellulolytic microorganisms and AM fungi as inocula in the applied compost increased plant protection by 80%, 75%, and 73%, as compared with the NPK treatment, respectively. No significant differences in plant dry weight, N, P content and tomato yield were obtained between FYM and the mineral fertilizer treatment. However, different types of compost induced a significant increase in plant dry matter, N and P uptake and fruit yield relative to the FYM and mineral fertilizer treatments.

Notes: Abstract Temperature measurement is an essential element in monitoring and studying the thermal deformation response of machine tools and CMM structures. In this context, temperature measurement is required for model verification, for control purposes and for determining the thermal contact resistance and other thermal boundary conditions. In these applications, where heat flux and temperature rise levels are relatively low, a proper thermometric design is a must to ensure accurate and precise results. This paper addresses the problem of thermometric design in the case of temperature measurement inside a solid body and on its surface. Results and recommendations regarding the interactions between neighbouring thermocouples, the effect of the distance between the thermocouple and the contact interface (i.e. the heat input surface), and the effect of heat flow along the thermocouple wires on the measurement error are presented. The issue of the effect of the unknown thickness and thermal conductivity of the surface paint on the uncertainty in surface temperature measurement is also addressed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Mikromethode zur Bestimmung von Cu, Pb, Al, Fe, U und Ni in organischen Verbindungen wurde angegeben.
Notes: Summary A micromethod for the determination of copper, lead, aluminium, iron, uranium, and nickel in organic compounds is presented. Mineralization of sample is accomplished using either the closed flask combustion method (for Cu-, Pb-, Al-, Fe-, or U-containing organic compounds) or the open flask digestion procedure (for Pb-, Al-, Fe-, or Ni-containing compounds). The decomposition process differ from one metal to the other but the method of determination to follow is the same for all metals investigated. The excess of 8-hydroxyquinoline reagent, added to precipitate the metaloxine complex, is measured polarographically. Average % errors of ± 0.54 and ± 0.65 are obtained using the oxygen-flask method and the wet decomposition technique, respectively.

Notes: Summary Five protein sources, namely, sunflower seed protein concentrate, soy protein concentrate, lupine flour, rice bran flour, and fish protein concentrate, were used to enrich wheat bread. The protein sources were added at 5 % and 10 % levels. Chemical analysis of the enriched bread revealed increase in the protein content by values ranging from 16 to 62 %. Sensoric evaluation included: aroma, crumb colour, crust colour, texture, flavour, and overall acceptability. The mean scores for these characteristics show that the protein sources are favourable supplements especially at 5 % level.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Methode zur Mikrobestimmung von Kohlenstoff und Wasserstoff in Fluor- und Perfluorverbindungen wurde beschrieben.
Notes: Summary A method is described for the microdetermination of carbon and hydrogen in fluoro and perfluoro compounds. Samples are burned in a rapid flow of oxygen (35 ml/min) using the rapid straight empty tube method. Carbon and hydrogen are determined by gravimetry. Before entering the soda asbestos tube, the combustion products are conducted through a silica gel-hydrochloric acid mixture and then either through acidified silver nitrate solution or through silica gel transfused with silver nitrate. The standard deviation ranges from ±0.03 to 0.38 for carbon and from ±0.04 to 0.25 for hydrogen.
