    Notes: Abstract The radioactive study of Ni−NiS bead fire-assay followed by neutron activation analysis showed nearly quantitative collection of the platinum group elements and gold in the bead. However, there was clearly some loss of gold and ruthenium at the dissolution and filtration stage. A preliminary study of the radiochemical fire-assay method indicates that the technique could overcome the problem of losses. Chemical carrier behaves in the same way as platinum metal concentrate during the analytical procedure and could be used to evaluate yields during each determination. When applied to rock samples, the radiochemical fire-assay gives good sensitivity and could be applied to the determination of nanogram concentrations of the platinum group elements without the problem of high blank values from reagents.

    Notes: Summary The stability of miscible fluid displacement through porous media has been investigated when concentration induced density and viscosity gradients are present. The dependence of Rayleigh's number on the horizontal planform of cellular motion is established and it is shown that the Rayleigh and wave numbers interact in a nonlinear fashion and hence have to be treated as two independent parameters in the analysis of stability process.

    Notes: Abstract The annual gonadial changes of S. cuccullatta from the coast of Karachi (Lat. 24° 50′ N) show a different pattern of reproductive behaviour from that of the majority of oysters so far studied. Although loss of sexuality may be seen in the species, an `inactive' phase of the gonads is not noticeable in individuals from this coast. The stages of gametogenesis are staggered in different individuals of the population all the year round and in this sense continuous gonadial activity occurs in the species. Spawning is of a continuous pattern, with three peaks in January, May and October/November. The gametogenesis may occur in individuals as small as 0.5 cm in length proceeding towards maturation but before spawning the gametes are, usually, phagocytosed.

    Notes: Abstract In the four common oviparous oysters from the coast of Karachi, Crassostrea rivularis, C. madrasensis, Saccostrea glomerata and S. cucculata, the gonad appeared at the age of 2–3 months, at a length of 0.4–0.6 cm. Sex is determined from the origin and hermaphrodites are rare, their percentage among the population increasing as growth proceeds, but is not affected by changes of the seasons. Incidence of hermaphrodites and changes in sex ratio suggest a change of sex as seen in oysters of temperate zones.

    Description: We revise the taxonomy of the agamid genus Sitana Cuvier, 1829, a widely distributed terrestrial lizard from the Indian subcontinent based on detailed comparative analyses of external morphology, osteology and molecular data. We sampled 81 locations spread over 160,000 km2 in Peninsular India including type localities, which represented two known and five previously undescribed species. Based on general similarity in body shape and dewlap all species were hitherto identified as members of the genus Sitana. However, Sitana deccanensis and two other morphotypes, which are endemic to north Karnataka and Maharashtra in Peninsular India, are very distinct from the rest of the known members of the genus Sitana based on their external morphology and osteology. Moreover, members of this distinct morphological group were monophyletic in the molecular tree, and this clade (clade 1) was sister to two well-supported clades (2 and 3) constituting the rest of the Sitana. The interclade genetic divergence in mtDNA between clade 1 and clades 2 and 3 was 21-23%, whereas clade 2 and clade 3 exhibited 14- 16% genetic divergence. Thus, we designate a new genus name “Sarada” gen. nov. for species represented in Clade 1, which also includes the recently resurrected Sitana deccanensis. We describe two new species in Sarada gen. nov. and three new species in Sitana. Similarity in the dewlap of Sitana and Sarada gen. nov. is attributed to similar function (sexual signaling) and similarity in body shape is attributed to a similar terrestrial life style and/or common ancestry.

    Description: The origin of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) perylene in sediments and petroleum has been a matter of continued debate. Reported to occur in Phanerozoic organic matter (OM), fossil crinoids and tropical termite mounds, its mechanism of formation remains unclear. While a combustion source can be excluded, structural similarities to perylene quinone-like components present in e.g. fungi, plants, crinoids and insects, potentially suggest a product–precursor relationship. Here, we report perylene concentrations, 13C/12C, and D/H ratios from a Holocene sediment profile from the Qingpu trench, Yangtze Delta region, China. Perylene concentrations differ from those of pyrogenic PAHs, and rise to prominence in a stratigraphic interval that was dominated by woody vegetation as determined by palynology including fungal spores. In this zone, perylene concentrations exhibit an inverse relationship to the lignin marker guaiacol, D/H ratios between −284‰ and −317‰, similar to the methoxy groups in lignin, as well as co-variation with spores from wood-degrading fungi. 13C/12C of perylene differs from that of land plant wax alkanes and falls in the fractionation range expected for saprophytic fungi that utilise lignin, which is isotopically lighter than cellulose and whole wood. During progressive lignin degradation, the relative carbon isotopic ratio of the perylene decreases. We therefore hypothesise a relationship of perylene to the activity of wood-degrading fungi. To support our hypothesis, we analysed a wide range of Phanerozoic sediments and oils, and found perylene to generally be present in subordinate amounts before the evolutionary rise of vascular plants, and to be generally absent from marine-sourced oils, few exceptions being attributed perhaps to a contribution of marine and/or terrestrial-derived fungi, anoxia (especially under marine conditions) and/or contamination of core material by fungi. A series of low-molecular-weight aromatic quinones bearing the perylene-backbone were detected in Devonian and Cretaceous sediments, potentially representing precursor components to perylene.
