    Notes: Abstract Population densities of mycorrhizal fungal propagules in a western Kentucky field highly productive for soybean were measured by bioassay throughout a soybean production season. The primary experimental variables were crop rotation (soybeans in 1985, then 2 years in corn, milo, fescue, or soybean, then soybean in 1988 on all plots when populations of propagules were determined) and soil fumigation with 67% methyl bromide/33% chloropicrin. Of the 20 species in three genera found, Glomus predominated both in terms of number of species and population densities. Most species of Glomus occurred at higher population densities in rotated plots than in continuous soybean plots. In continuous soybean plots, species of Gigaspora made up a much higher proportion of the mycorrhizal fungal community than in rotated crops. Species richness and diversity were lower, and dominance and equitability higher, in nonfumigated continuous soybean plots than in rotated plots early in the season, but the differences were not present at the end of the season. Soil fumigation killed most propagules in the upper 15 cm of soil, but after production of a crop of soybeans, populations of total propagules and most Glomus spp. recovered to prefumigation densities. However, Gigaspora margarita and Gigaspora gigantea did not recover similarly. Fumigation reduced species richness and diversity and increased dominance, but the effects were ameliorated by the end of the season. Colonization of roots was low during vegetative growth but increased rapidly after the onset of soybean reproduction. There was no evidence for mutualism during the early half of the season, perhaps due to high soil P and low dependency of soybean. Fumigation increased soybean yields. A stable mycorrhizal fungal community appeared to become established with continuous soybean production, and both crop rotation and soil fumigation disrupted the community.

    Notes: The long chain-length behaviors of the static polarizability α and second hyperpolarizability γ of species of polyenic chains with various combinations of donor–acceptor substitutions and charged topological defects are studied by ab initio finite-field method. Both α and γ were found to exhibit linear chain-length dependent growth in the long chain-length limit for all combinations. The growth rates are universal, independent of the presence or absence of the substitutions or the charged topological defects. The origin of the universal growth is discussed using a local-view formalism that is based on the local atomic charge derivatives. It is found that this formalism can provide quantitative accounts of the saturated growth of α and γ. The effects on α and γ of a polyenic chain by the presence of a charged topological soliton are found to be additive. This allows the identification and calculation of the polarizability and second hyperpolarizability of a stand-alone charged soliton. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The linear and nonlinear evolution of the interchange instability of a resistive plasma (the resistive g mode) in a sheared magnetic field is studied using electrostatic particle simulation methods. Both the fast and slow interchange mode regimes are considered. In both cases the linear growth rates of the modes scale well with the theoretical values. The saturation of the instabilities is caused primarily by convective mixing of pressure over the width of the eigenmode. The saturation levels predicted by mixing length theory are in reasonable agreement with the simulation results.

    Notes: The multiple helicity nonlinear interaction of resistive tearing modes is compared for the tokamak and reversed field pinch configurations using the magnetohydrodynamic equations. Unlike the case of the tokamak disruption, for which this interaction is destabilizing when islands overlap, the nonlinear coupling of the dominant helicities is shown to be a stabilizing influence in the reversed field pinch. The behavior of the coupled instabilities in the two configurations can be understood as a consequence of the stability properties of the nonlinearly driven modes. In the case of the tokamak disruption, quasilinear effects linearly destabilize the dominant driven mode, which then feeds energy to the driving mode. For the reversed field pinch the driven modes remain stable, acting as a brake on the growth of the dominant instabilities. Furthermore, for the reversed field pinch configuration, numerical results indicate that nonlinear coupling of different helicities results in noticeably more rapid saturation of the dominant instabilities than was observed in single helicity studies.

    Notes: The results of a study of the role of multiple-helicity nonlinear interaction of tearing modes and the dynamics of magnetic relaxation and dynamo activity in a high-temperature, current-carrying plasma are described. A set of fluid equations for tearing modes in the semicollisional regime is derived, and a previous resistive magnetohydrodynamic study of tearing mode turbulence is thus extended to high-temperature regimes. Because of the direct connection between fluctuation evolution and configuration evolution, a generalized nonlinear theory of the turbulent dynamo and magnetic relaxation is proposed, and a two-point 〈(∇⊥p˜)ψ˜〉-correlation evolution is determined by calculating the relaxation time τcl. This calculated relaxation time is shown to serve as the phase shift between v˜r and ψ˜ and hence to control magnetic energy relaxation and dynamo processes. Careful study of the two separated regions of kink-tearing modes (i.e., the resonant region and the exterior region) reveals the direct relationship between the equilibrium magnetic energy relaxation and average magnetic flux evolution. Thus a theoretical interpretation of the observed correlation between magnetic fluctuations and maintenance of field reversal is provided. Finally, the correlation lifetime of the flux transport term is evaluated from the renormalized two-point theory, and the saturated magnetic fluctuation level is estimated. The result shows that the saturation level is independent of or very weakly dependent on the Lundquist number S. The implications of this result for anomalous thermal transport and dynamo activity in high-temperature reversed field pinch experiments are discussed.

    Notes: The saturation mechanism for density and potential fluctuation spectra that evolve from linearly unstable electrostatic resistive interchange modes are investigated using particle simulations. Detailed comparisons of the nonlinear evolution, saturation levels, and resultant spectra between two- and three-dimensional sheared magnetic field configurations are made. Significant differences appear. The single rational surface, quasilinear-dominated evolution, fluctuation spectrum is adequately described using a density convection model. For the multiple rational surface case, the potential fluctuations are adequately represented by a balance between the nonlinearly modified source (curvature drive) and linear sink (parallel resistive field line diffusion). An accurate description of the density spectrum requires a mode coupling theory based on the two-point density correlation evolution equation.
