Notes: Abstract A method is proposed, which allows sub-Doppler spectroscopy by means of correlation between photons emitted in atomic cascades. No laser sources are necessary and lineshapes in the absence of strong perturbing electromagnetic fields can be investigated.

Notes: Summary A scanning probe microscope operating in air with interchangeable atomic force-friction force (AFM-FFM) and electronic-tunnelling (STM) heads is presented. Our AFM operates in the so-called contact mode and utilizes the optical-lever detection method which allows simultaneous measurement of the topography as well as the lateral force. The set-up also contains an optical microscope to control both the sample and the probe laser spot on the cantilever. The experimental method to change from AFM to STM operation is based on the use of the probe laser beam and the optical microscope. The maximum scanning area is (24×24) μm2 and it is well embraced in the optical-microscope visual field. The microscope attains atomic resolution in air in both AFM and STM configuration. Its performance is demonstrated on the surface of different samples.

Notes: Summary Energy pooling in alkali vapour mixtures has been previously investigated by us in an amalgam of sodium and potassium. In this paper we describe the peculiar features appearing when some buffer gas is introduced in the cell. We demonstrate that the buffer gas enhances the energy transfer between Na(3P) and K(4S), which is detected through the effects induced on the highly excited states populated by the Na(3P)/Na(3P) and K(4P)/K(4P) collisions.

Notes: Summary The illumination of potassium vapour by means of a c.w. dye-laser resonant with the fundamental 4S→4P transitions results in the excitation of high-lying atomic and molecular states. In the present paper we report a spectroscopic study of this phenomenon and experimental evidence that the mechanisms responsible for the population of some of the levels not directly excited by the laser involve the creation of a plasma in the vapour.

Notes: Summary Two blue lines (406.7 nm and 413.1 nm) of a Kr+ laser have been used to excite the potassium dimer K2. We have analysed the spectral region between 400 nm and 800 nm where a rich fluorescence spectrum has been observed as the result of different decay processes. Some of these features have not been reported previously; in particular we interpret the blue fluorescence (≈(400÷470) nm) as due to theC→X andD→X bands, as indicated also by the absorption spectra recorded in this region for different temperatures.

Notes: Summary We have used a Raman microprobe technique for the characterisation and the diagnostic of YBCO superconducting thin films deposited by Pulsed-Laser Ablation (PLA) on MgO insulating substrates. Using polarisation analysis associated with sample rotations we developed a method for films orientation determination without any request for absolute calibration of the Raman spectra. The use of a bidimensional multichannel detector (OMA 4) allowed an overall detection time of 40 minutes. Each spectrum (shift range from 100 cm−1 to 700 cm−1) takes about 600 seconds. The results of this detection were used to determine the oxygen content, from the position of the Raman mode at 500 cm−1 Homogeneity was checked with the spatial resolution allowed by the dimension of the focused laser beam (10 μm).

Notes: Summary We report the observation of strong red- and blue-light emission in free-standing porous-silicon samples prepared fromn + substrates at different anodization current densities. The surface morphology of the free-standing samples has been analyzed by means of atomic-force microscopy. Upon excitation with nanosecond pulses at room temperature, both blue and red luminescence bands appear, peaked around 3.2 and 2.0 eV, respectively. An extensive study of the time-resolved behavior of the photoluminescence signal reveals different dynamical features for the two spectral regions. The observed long decay time (several μs) of the red band reflects the predominant effect of non-radiative processes and is consistent with models based on excition diffusion through the interconnected silicon nanocrystals (quantum dots) skeleton. The relatively fast blue-band decay time (≈400 ns) is shown to be related to non-radiative recombination through trap states at the silicon nanocrystal surface.

Notes: Summary I–V DC characteristics have been measured on metal/ porous-silicon structures. In particular, the measurements on metal/ free-standing porous-silicon film/metal devices confirmed the result, already obtained, that the metal/poroussilicon interface plays a crucial role in the transport of any device. Four-contacts measurements on free-standing layers showed that the current linearly depends on the voltage and that the conduction process is thermally activated, the activtion energy depending on the porous silicon film production parameters. Finally, annealing experiments performed in order to improve the conduction of rectifiyng contacts, are described.

Notes: Line intensities of H2CO are analyzed between 1148.4 and 1192.8 cm−1 by taking into account the Coriolis interaction involving the ν4 and ν6 fundamentals. Finally two intensity parameters can be significantly determined: ∂μy/∂q4=0.0592±0.0018 D and ∂μx/∂q6=0.0772±0.0019 D. From these results, the "deperturbed'' band strenghts can be calculated: S04=20.9±1.3 cm‘u−2 atm−1 and S06=38.0±1.9 cm−2 atm−1 at T=297 K.
