Notes: In this paper the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation spectra of trilayers Fe/Ag/Cu, Fe/Cu/Ag, Fe/Au/Cu, and Fe/Cu/Au were measured and calculated. The experimental results coincided well with the calculated results. It was found that for trilayers Fe/Cu/Ag and Fe/Ag/Cu, with a 100 A(ring) thickness of the top Fe layer, there were two Kerr rotation peaks in their rotational magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra, located near 320 nm (the plasma edge of Ag) and 560 nm (the absorption edge of Cu). For Fe/Cu/Au and Fe/Au/Cu, with a 100 A(ring) thickness of the top Fe layer, there was only one Kerr rotation peak, which shifts slightly with the intermediate layer thickness. Trilayers Fe/Au/Cu and Fe/Cu/Au with suitable thickness of the top Fe layer are useful at present for magneto-optical storage with a read-out laser of long wavelength; Fe/Ag/Au and Fe/Cu/Ag will be useful in the future for magneto-optical storage with read-out laser of short wavelength.

Notes: Bulk nanocrystalline selenium (nc-Se) specimens with various grain sizes were prepared by isothermally crystallizing as-quenched amorphous selenium. Microhardness measurements indicated that with a decrease in grain size, from 25 to 9 nm, hardnesses of nc-Se samples increase dramatically from 0.34 to 0.98 GPa, i.e., a normal Hall–Petch relationship is obtainable over the grain size range studied for nc-Se samples. Structural characterization of nc-Se using x-ray diffraction revealed an evident lattice distortion in the nanocrystalline state, namely the lattice parameter a is increased, whereas c is decreased simultaneously with a reduction of grain size. The variation tendency of microhardness with grain size can be well correlated with the change of the unit cell volume in nc-Se, which implies that the lattice structure of the nanocrystalline state is a factor affecting the mechanical properties. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Amorphous oxide films with a composition of Bi2DyFe5O12 have been prepared by rf sputtering technique. The crystallization process was investigated using x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, magnetic properties, magnetic resonance spectra, magneto-optical Faraday spectra, Raman spectra, and infrared reflection spectra. Amorphous oxide films exhibit very small magnetization and Faraday rotation at room temperature. At about 600 °C amorphous films crystallize to a garnet phase. With crystallization the magnetization and Faraday rotation increase rapidly. Raman and infrared spectra studies show the presence of tetrahedral sites in the amorphous films. As the annealing temperature increases, the peaks corresponding to octahedral and dodecahedral sites occur successively. It is of interest to note that amorphous oxide films containing Fe3+ ions show no magnetic resonance spectra at 71 and 300 K. The films annealed above crystallization temperature show a normal resonance spectrum. With increasing annealing temperature the linewidth decreases rapidly and the effective magnetization and anisotropy constant increase. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: BaCoTiFe10O19 films were prepared by sputtering. The as-sputtered films are amorphus and have a magnetization of 5 emu/cm3 and a coercivity of 700 Oe at room temperature. Compared with bulk BaCoTiFe10O19 hexaferrites, the magnetization is much smaller, but the coercivity is higher. After annealing at about 750 °C in an oxygen atmosphere, the films crystallize into an M-type hexagonal ferrite with a preferred orientation of the (110) plane being parallel to the film surface. The magnetization increases rapidly to 320 emu/cm3, but the coercivity decreases to 100 Oe. The amorphous samples with a large amount of Fe3+ ions show no ferromagnetic magnetic resonance spectra. After crystallization a well-defined ferromagnetic resonance spectrum occurs. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A high reflectivity broadband BaTiO3 self-pumped phase conjugator with external ring cavity in near-infrared wavelengths (706–850 nm) is reported. Phase conjugate reflectivity as high as 77.5% was observed at 756 nm. The losses and the reflection grating are discussed in detail.

Notes: The second-order nonlinear optical coefficients d33, d31, and d15 of GaN:Mg epitaxial film were studied by the standard Maker fringe of an anisotropic medium. The measured d33=−(16.5±1.3) pm/V which is 55 times of the d11 of quartz. The measured ratios of d33/d31 and d31/d15 showed that the crystalline film is close to an ideal wurzite structure. The refractive indices and the dispersive curves of ne, n0 were also determined by TM and TE waveguide mode measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: (BiDy)Fe5O12 films in the amorphous state were made by rf magnetron sputtering from a sintered Bi2DyFe5O12 ceramic target onto quartz substrates and confirmed by x-ray diffraction. The films were annealed at different temperatures ranging from 500 to 800 °C for 1 h in air. The crystallization temperature was about 650 °C, as measured by DTA method. Magnetization M versus temperature relation of well crystallized films showed both a compensation temperature Tcomp (80 K) and Curie temperature TC (563 K). The M-T curve from 1.5 to 600 K of amorphous film showed no definite TC or Tcomp; M measured in a field of 20 kOe decreased monotonously. The Faraday rotation (500–700 nm) of amorphous films was small. The M and Faraday rotation (633 nm) increased rapidly at the crystallization temperature. The Bi ion induced peak (550 nm) in the Faraday spectra got higher with the increasing annealing temperature and was up to 9.14 degree/μm. The Faraday spectra of films annealed at 650 °C for different times showed that the films were well crystallized after annealing for 10 min. The optical absorption of the films in the visible region varied little during the transformation from amorphous to polycrystalline.

Notes: Crystalline Co spinel ferrite films were prepared by rf sputtering on glass substrates without buffer layer and annealed at temperatures from 400 to 600 °C for 2 h in air. (100) texture was obtained in these films. The anisotropy constant, magnetic hysteresis loops, and magneto-optical Faraday spectra of the films were measured. The texture became poor when the films were annealed below 500 °C, but the perpendicular anisotropy constant Ku, squareness ratio R=(Mr/Ms)⊥/(Mr/Ms)(parallel) increased and showed peak values of 2.2×105 ergs/cm3 and 0.94, respectively, at an annealing temperature Ta=500 °C. For the film annealed at 600 °C (higher than the Curie temperature, 520 °C, of Co spinel ferrite), the texture recovered, but Ku and R dropped. The Faraday rotation spectra of Co spinel ferrite films showed a broad peak centered around 720 nm. The peak value increased monotonically with increasing annealing temperature. These results may be related to the Co ion-induced anisotropy and Co ion distribution in tetrahedral sites and octahedral sites.
