    Description: Fault gouge samples were collected from deep-seated fractures in the Dongshengmiao polymetallic pyrite deposit. Fault gouge particles were analysed by transmission electron microscopy. Many particles were identified with sizes of 200 nm or less, such as carbon-bearing, gold, Pb-bearing or Zn-bearing mineral particles. Carbon-bearing particles included graphite, carbonate, organic matter and carbonate mixed with organic matter. Gold particles were found in fault gouge samples in the form of natural gold, which had not been previously observed. Other particles, such as Pb- and Zn-bearing particles, directly reflect the ore-forming elemental characteristics of the Dongshengmiao deposit. Based on analysis of these particles, the following conclusions made: (1) carbon-bearing particles were deduced to be able to provide additional information related to the deposit formation; (2) fracture-induced stress acted on particles based on the observed lattice deformations in the gold, graphite, dolomite and Fe-bearing particles and the uneven edges of many particles; and (3) information about concealed ore bodies can be more easily obtained through the study of fault gouge particles, which will make ore body exploration more efficient.

    Description: Laser amplification in plasma, including stimulated Raman scattering amplification and strongly coupled stimulated Brillouin scattering (sc-SBS) amplification, is very promising to generate ultrahigh-power and ultrashort laser pulses. But both are quite complex in experiments: at least three different laser pulses must be prepared; temporal delay and spatial overlap of these three pulses are difficult. We propose a single pulse compression scheme based on sc-SBS in plasma. Only one moderately long laser is applied, the front part of which ionizes the gas to produced plasma, and gets reflected by a plasma mirror at the end of the gas channel. The reflected front quickly depletes the remaining part of the laser by sc-SBS in the self-similar regime. The output laser is much stronger and shorter. This scheme is at first considered theoretically, then validated by using 1D PIC simulations.

    Description: The transcription factor NF-kappaB modulates apoptotic responses induced by genotoxic stress. We show that NF-kappaB essential modulator (NEMO), the regulatory subunit of IkappaB kinase (IKK) (which phosphorylates the NF-kappaB inhibitor IkappaB), associates with activated ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) after the induction of DNA double-strand breaks. ATM phosphorylates serine-85 of NEMO to promote its ubiquitin-dependent nuclear export. ATM is also exported in a NEMO-dependent manner to the cytoplasm, where it associates with and causes the activation of IKK in a manner dependent on another IKK regulator, a protein rich in glutamate, leucine, lysine, and serine (ELKS).     Description: The fault detection method based on the analytical model can not completely deal with the model uncertainty, disturbance torque, measurement error and other disturbances, and it is difficult to detect small faults similar to disturbances. A detection method of small actuator fault based on stacked autoencoder(SAE) network is proposed. By learning historical data of system, SAE network can reconstruct the state data with stable errors. The relation between states of system will change when a fault occurs, and residual will change too. The variation trend of the residual can be used to detect the fault. Simulation results show that SAE network is more robust to disturbance compared with Elman neural network and nonlinear observer. Small faults under the disturbance can be detected by SAE network.

    Description: Metal pollution has been widely reported in mangrove wetlands; however, the mechanisms involved in metal detoxification by mangroves are still poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the possible function of root anatomy and lignification/suberization on metal uptake and tolerance in seedlings of six species of mangroves. The results revealed that the three rhizophoraceous species ( Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Poir, Kandelia obovata Sheue, Liu & Yong and Rhizophora stylosa Griff) consistently exhibited higher metal tolerances than the three pioneer species ( Aegiceras corniculatum (Linn.) Blanco, Acanthus ilicifolius L. and Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Viern.). Moreover, metal-tolerant species often exhibited a thick exodermis with high lignification and suberization. The tolerance indices of the mangroves were found to be positively correlated with the amounts of lignin and suberin deposition within the exodermal cell walls. The observed metal uptake by the excised roots further illustrated that a lignified/suberized exodermis directly delayed the entry of metals into the roots, and thereby contributed to a higher tolerance to heavy metals. In summary, the present study proposes a barrier property of the lignified/suberized exodermis in dealing with the stresses of heavy metals, such that the mangroves which possessed more extensive lignification/suberization within the exodermis appeared to exhibit higher metal tolerance.

    Description: The adsorption and separation of CO 2 /N 2 mixture in the edge-functionalized nanoporous carbons (NPCs) were investigated by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. Results demonstrated that edge-functionalization effectively improved the pore structure characteristics of NPCs. The edge-functionalization can enhance the uptake of CO 2 /N 2 and the selectivity of CO 2 over N 2 in NPCs. The isosteric heat and radial distribution functions confirmed that temperature had a negative effect on the single-component adsorption of CO 2 /N 2 whereas pressure had a positive effect before adsorption reaches a stable equilibrium state. Overall, this work highlighted the effects of edge-functionalization on the adsorption and separation of CO 2 /N 2 in NPCs, and provided an effective strategy for designing and selecting solid adsorbents for carbon capture and storage.

    Description: Thermoelectric generation technology has attracted increasing attention because of its promising applications. In this work, the heat transfer characteristics and the performance of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) with different cold-side heat dissipation intensity has been studied. By fixing the hot-side temperature of TEG, the effects of various external conditions including the flow rate and the inlet temperature of the cooling water flowing through the cold-sided heat sink have been investigated detailedly. It was showed that the output power and the efficiency of TEG increased with temperature different enlarged, whereas the efficiency of TEG reduced with flow rate increased. It is proposed that more heat taken by the cooling water is attributed to the efficiency decrease when the flow rate of the cooling water is increased. This study would provide fundamental understanding for the design of more refined thermoelectric generation systems.

    Description: This article introduces a multi-stage heat-driven thermoacoustic cryocooler capable of reaching cooling capacity about 1 kW at liquefied natural gas temperature range without any moving mechanical parts. The cooling system consists of an acoustically resonant double-acing traveling wave thermoacoustic heat engine and three identical pulse tube coolers. Unlike other traditional traveling wave thermoacoustic heat engines, the acoustically resonant double-acting thermoacoustic heat engine is a closed-loop configuration consists of three identical thermoacoustic conversion units. Each pulse tube cooler is bypass driven by one thermoacoustic heat engine unit. The device is acoustically completely symmetric and therefore “self-matching” for efficient traveling-wave thermoacoustic conversion. In the experiments, with 7 MPa helium gas as working gas, when the heating temperature reaches 918 K, total cooling capacity of 0.88 kW at 110 K is obtained with a resonant frequency of about 55 Hz. When the heating temperature is 903 K, a maximum total cooling capacity at 130 K of 1.20 kW is achieved, with a thermal-to-cold exergy efficiency of 8%. Compared to previously developed heat-driven thermoacoustic cryocoolers, this device has higher thermal efficiency and higher power density. It shows a good prospect of application in the field of natural gas liquefaction and recondensation.

    Notes: HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ (Hg-1223) superconducting thin films of about 0.3 μm in thickness have been successfully synthesized. The process involves depositing films (∼ 1 μm thickness) of Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox on a SrTiO3 substrate by pulse laser ablation technique and implanting mercury ions into this deposited film, followed by annealing at oxygen atmosphere. The films so obtained show a relatively wide superconducting transition temperature up to 118 K, as determined magnetically, which is similar to that of underdoping bulk Hg-1223. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
