Notes: Abstract. We have synthesized the ytterbium fulleride compounds YbxC60 (x=1–6) at a range of lower temperature (530 °C–570 °C). Except for the nominal composition Yb3C60 compound, which has been reported in the references, we also obtained a new phase Yb6C60, whose structure is orthorhombic with space group P21212 and unit cell parameters a=21.28 Å, b=20.13 Å and c=15.89 Å. The YbxC60 compounds are sensitive to oxygen, the samples exposed in air convert to an amorphous phase and Yb2O3 compound.

Notes: Structural, magnetic, and calorimetric properties are reported for the La1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7 solid solution. The structure remains orthorhombic with lattice parameter increases from a=0.3872, b=0.3927, and c=1.1709 nm for PrBa2Cu3O7 to a=0.3903, b=0.3944, and c=1.1801 nm for LaBa2Cu3O7. Substitution of Pr for La depresses Tc from 90 to 52 K for La0.5Pr0.5Ba2Cu3O7, which was reported to be a nonsuperconductor. The Pr antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN decreases monotonically from 18 K for PrBa2Cu3O7 to 6 K for La0.8Pr0.2Ba2Cu3O7. Thus there is a large range of coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism for 0.2≤x≤0.5. The superconductivity and anomalous Pr ordering will be discussed with the R1−xPrxBa2Cu3O7 systems (R=Y, Nd–Lu). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The use of a sputtered silicon film as a new type of etching mask is reported for the first time. Its desirable properties arise because of similar material characteristics (thermal expansion coefficient, crystal structure, smaller misfit factors) and different etching behavior as compared to gallium arsenide. These properties are studied and utilized in the fabrication of GaAs/GaAlAs double heterostructure (DH) ridge waveguide devices.

Notes: The application of thin Si films for selective area Si and Zn diffusion into GaAs and AlGaAs is described in detail. The concentration-dependent pair diffusion coefficient and the activation energy for Si diffusion into AlxGa1−xAs under As overpressure for 0≤x≤0.8 are measured using both secondary ion mass spectrometry and junction depth studies. Furthermore, Si films are seen to act as an ideal mask for Zn diffusion at temperatures below 750 °C. Ideal lateral Zn diffusion profiles are routinely observed using these films, independent of stress at the interface which provides new insight into the nature of laterally enhanced diffusion.

Notes: HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ (Hg-1223) superconducting thin films of about 0.3 μm in thickness have been successfully synthesized. The process involves depositing films (∼ 1 μm thickness) of Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox on a SrTiO3 substrate by pulse laser ablation technique and implanting mercury ions into this deposited film, followed by annealing at oxygen atmosphere. The films so obtained show a relatively wide superconducting transition temperature up to 118 K, as determined magnetically, which is similar to that of underdoping bulk Hg-1223. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: White-beam synchrotron topography has been demonstrated to be well suited for observation of all kinds of ferroelastic and ferroelectric twin domains. It is found that the domains that are misorientated against each other always appear as orientation contrasts in the topographs, while the antiparallel domains with parallel lattices may show different diffraction intensity by the synchrotron-radiation anomalous-scattering effect. Based on the reciprocal-lattice splitting and the diffraction geometry, a general method of determination of the image displacement associated with two misorientated domains is given to explain their orientation contrast. It is also revealed that the anomalous-scattering contrast of antiparallel domains arises from the anomalous-dispersion terms of the noncentrosymmetric atoms in the unit cell of ferroelectric crystals.

Notes: 4B9A is a focusing and monochromatic photon beam at the BSRF, which was constructed in 1990. During the second phase of the BSRF program, the surface of the cylindrical mirror has been coated with Pt, covering the original Ni, and the monochromator has been upgraded. The maximum photon energy extends to 11 keV and the intensity has increased about tenfold with respect to the previous intensity at 6 keV. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns for the Hg-1223 (HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ) superconducting bulk and thin film have been measured at 1.54014 Å. Results indicate that the bulk and film can be indexed as possessing tetragonal symmetry; lattice parameters a = 3.856 Å and c = 15.851 Å for the bulk Hg-1223 compound, and a = 3.8517 Å and c = 15.8511 Å for the film. Their structures are similar.

Notes: In situ white-beam synchrotron radiation topographic observations under an electric field have been made on the KTiOPO4 (KTP) family of crystals. The investigation shows a strong enhancement of diffracted intensity for hkl reflections (l ≠ 0) and topographic contrast in the form of fine striations when the external electric field is parallel to the polar axis. Several kinds of doped and undoped samples with various grown-in defects, such as domain boundaries, growth striations, growth-sector boundaries, dislocations, etc., have been studied in detail. The results suggest that these defects have very little effect on the field-induced striations. It is believed that the movement of K^+ ions driven by the electric field leads to a local accumulation of charges and a lattice distortion. The strongly anisotropic conductivity is a governing factor in the explanation of the field-related phenomena in this kind of quasi-one-dimensional conductor.

Notes: Abstract Co-doped impurity-free YBa2(Cu1−x Co x )3O7−δ(123Cox) with x=0.03 superconducting samples have been synthesized using conventional solid state reaction techniques. A Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data for these specimens reveals that two structures (one tetragonal represented by T-YBCO, and the other orthorhombic represented by O-YBCO) co-exist at this composition of the cuprate. The use of a single tetragonal or single orthorhombic structure as the model for the refinements does not produce acceptable fits to the X-ray diffraction pattern. The refinements show that the T-YBCO phase at 298 K has tetragonal symmetry (P4/mmm) with a=0.387879(4) nm, c=1.17314(1) nm, and that the O-YBCO phase has at 298 K an orthorhombic symmetry (Pmmm) with a=0.387555(4) nm, b=0.389400(4) nm, c=1.17363(1) nm, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Y(Ba1−x Gd x )2Cu3O7−δ compounds with x = 0 ∼ 0.15 are prepared using the solid reaction technique. With structure analysis by Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction, we find that Gd3+ ions prefer to occupy Y sites within lighter doping x ≤ 0.08 due to ion size effects, then begin partially to occupy Ba sites with doping content increasing, which gives vital influence on superconductivity and spin-gap properties. The magnetic doping effects of Gd3+ ions on spin-gap properties are investigated in detail by contrast of the distinguished behaviors between T* and T c, indicating that spin-gap temperature is not completely determined by the carrier density, but strongly dependent on the strength of interplane antiferromagnetic coupling. Finally, we propose an expression of in-plane resistivity dependent on the maximal width of spin-gap Δ0 to derive their values for different samples, which almost keep constant with the increase of Gd doping contents.
