Description: Multistage intercalation has been used to tune the interaction between adjacent blocks of CuO(2) sheets in the bigh-T(c) (high superconducting transition temperature) superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)Ox. As revealed by atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, foreign iodine atoms are intercalated into every nth BiO bilayer of the host crystal, resulting in structures of stoichiometry IBi2nSr2nCanCu2nOx with stage index n up to 4. An expansion of 3.6 angstroms for each intercalated BiO bilayer decouples the CuO(2) sheets in adjacent blocks. A comparison of the superconducting transition temperatures of the pristine host material and intercalated compounds of different stages suggests that the coupling between each pair of adjacent blocks contributes approximately 5 K to T(c) in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)Ox.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Xiang, X D -- Vareka, W A -- Zettl, A -- Corkill, J L -- Barbee, T W 3rd -- Cohen, M L -- Kijima, N -- Gronsky, R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1991 Dec 6;254(5037):1487-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17773298" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: Sizable single crystals of C(6O) have been synthesized and doped with potassium. Above the superconducting transition temperature T(c), the electrical resistivity p(T) displays a classic metal-like temperature dependence. The transition to the superconducting state at T(c) = 19.8 K is extremely sharp, with a transition width DeltaT 〈 200 mK. In contrast to transport behavior of doped polycrystalline and granular thin films, no anomalous fluctuations are observed near T(c) in single crystal specimens.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Xiang, X D -- Hou, J G -- Briceno, G -- Vareka, W A -- Mostovoy, R -- Zettl, A -- Crespi, V H -- Cohen, M L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 May 22;256(5060):1190-1.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17795215" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A method that combines thin film deposition and physical masking techniques has been used for the parallel synthesis of spatially addressable libraries of solid-state materials. Arrays containing different combinations, stoichiometries, and deposition sequences of BaCO(3), Bi(2)O(3), CaO, CuO, PbO, SrCO(3), and Y(2)O(3) were generated with a series of binary masks. The arrays were sintered and BiSrCaCuO and YBaCuO superconducting films were identified. Samples as small as 200 micrometers by 200 micrometers in size were generated, corresponding to library densities of 10,000 sites per square inch. The ability to generate and screen combinatorial libraries of solid-state compounds, when coupled with theory and empirical observations, may significantly increase the rate at which novel electronic, magnetic, and optical materials are discovered and theoretical predictions tested.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Xiang, X D -- Sun, X -- Briceno, G -- Lou, Y -- Wang, K A -- Chang, H -- Wallace-Freedman, W G -- Chen, S W -- Schultz, P G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1995 Jun 23;268(5218):1738-40.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17834993" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: A theoretical model analysis for a recently developed scanning evanescent microwave microscope has been performed. The result enables a quantitative microscopy of local complex dielectric constant profiles for dielectric materials. Various experiments were performed and found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. The estimation of intrinsic resolution of the microscope suggests that nanometer spatial resolution is achievable. System analysis gives a limiting sensitivity of about δε/ε∼1×10−5. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We implemented tip–sample distance control in a scanning evanescent microwave probe for nonlinear dielectric microscopy. With the analytic expression of the tip–sample capacitance as a function of tip–sample distance, we can quantitatively regulate the tip–sample separation and independently measure the dielectric nonlinearity by application of an ac bias voltage. Simultaneous imaging of topography and ferroelectric domains has been demonstrated on periodically poled LiNbO3 single crystals. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new design of the vibrating reed apparatus for studying the high-resonant overtones of very small samples is described. Using the high Q (∼103) helical rf resonator as a capacitive transducer, great sensitivity has been obtained. The theoretical sensitivity of the detector is investigated with transmission-line theory, and the result shows that the Johnson-noise-limited sensitivity is proportional to the Q of the resonator instead of Q1/2, as is the case of lumped LC-tuned circuit analyses. For a nonsuperconducting resonator, the Johnson-noise-limited minimum detectable displacement (Δdmin) at room temperature, with bandwidth B, is about 10−7 A(ring) (B/Hz)1/2, if the rf electrical field level is only limited by vacuum breakdown. An application of the apparatus in studying the temperature-dependent changes in the Young's modulus of single crystals of TaS3 is shown.

Notes: The combinatorial material chip strategy is used to study the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase boundary of the Ba1−xSrxTiO3 thin film system. The electro-optic (EO) effect at different compositions is measured using a modified direct-current/alternating-current birefringence EO measurement technique. We find that Ba1−xSrxTiO3 thin films exhibit relaxor like behavior with diffused ferroelectric domains existing well past the previously defined ferroelectric-paraelectric boundary (x〉0.3). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Combinatorial libraries of parallel-plate capacitors, consisting of Pt and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 electrodes and a doped BaxSr1−xTiO3 dielectric layer, have been fabricated and analyzed to systematically study the effects of dopants on device performance. Epitaxial heterostructure libraries with sharp interfaces were generated from amorphous layers on LaAlO3 substrates. Two hundred and forty different host/dopant combinations were synthesized on a 1/2 in. by 1/2 in. substrate, with 23 capacitors for each combination. Addition of 1.5 mol % W was found to increase the figure of merit (ε/Ileak) 220-fold and reduce the high-frequency (MHz and GHz) loss tangent by fourfold. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
