Notes: Magnetic properties of melt-spun Co80Zr20−xBx microcrystalline alloys (0≤x≤8) depend crucially on the quench rate. The optimized values of Hc =2.68 kOe and (BH)max =2.10 MG Oe were obtained for Co80Zr16B4 melt-spun with the substrate surface velocity of 48 m/s. A new crystalline phase of Co5Zr was observed.

Notes: The construction and operation of an ultrahigh-vacuum spherical electrostatic spectrometer for surface Mössbauer studies is reported. Data are presented which suggest that the recoil-free fraction at room temperature of very thin oxide layers on the surface of an iron foil is low.

Notes: Magnetization and 57Fe Mössbauer-effect measurements are reported for the magnetically ordered icosahedral alloys Al52.5Ge22.5Mn25 and Al52.5Ge22.5Mn24.85Fe0.15. The lack of saturation of magnetization suggests a noncollinear magnetic structure. It is shown that transition-metal atoms are distributed among a multiplicity of sites, which is interpreted as evidence for atomic disorder characteristic of icosahedral alloys. The reported and literature data show that the two-site model leads to unphysical Mössbauer parameters. It is shown that 57Fe Mössbauer spectra are due to the simultaneous presence of the electric-quadrupole interaction and the magnetic-dipole interaction, and that the former is significantly stronger than the latter.

Notes: Abstract Measurements with photoemission spectroscopy in the photon-energy range 35–130 eV have been used to determine the valence band of the stable icosahedral Al65Cu20Os15. Resonant photoemission near the Os 5p → 5d and 4f → 5d transitions has been employed to show that the feature in the valence band with the maximum intensity at 1.5 (1) eV below the Fermi level is predominantly of the Os 5d character. This has been additionally verified by conducting the photoemission measurements in the constant-initial-state mode and by using the effect of the Cooper minimum in the photoionization cross section of the Os 5d orbitals. The valence band feature with the maximum intensity at 3.7 (1) eV below the Fermi level has been shown as being due mainly to the states of the Cu 3d character. The Os 5d and Cu 3d empirical partial density of states have been determined from the photoemission spectra. The decrease of intensity towards the Fermi level has been interpreted as being indicative of the presence of a theoretically predicted pseudogap around the Fermi level. It has been indicated, however, that the Fermi cut-off also contributes to the observed intensity decrease. It has been demonstrated that the energy resolution of the spectroscopic measurements performed so far on quasicrystals was not high enough to unambiguously determine the presence of such a pseudogap. No unusual features in the valence band of icosahedral Al65Cu20Os15, which could be ascribed to its quasiperiodic nature, have been observed within the resolution of the experiment. High energy-resolution spectroscopic measurements were also shown to be essential to observe the theoretically predicted spikiness of the density of states in quasicrystals. A critical review of published spectroscopic data on the electronic structure of quasicrystals has also been presented.

Notes: Abstract The electric-quadrupole interactions at the Eu sites in Eu3V2O7 and Eu2VO4 oxides have been studied at room temperature with151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. Both divalent and trivalent Eu ions were found in the oxides. The fraction of Eu2+ is 17.1(8)% in Eu3V2O7 and 39.0(1.6) % in Eu2VO4. The values of the quadrupole coupling constant, eVzzQg, obtained from the fits using a full Hamiltonian method are −6.594(50) and −8.043(65) mm/s for Eu3+, and −13.168(402) and −18.032(134) mm/s for Eu2+, respectively in Eu3V2O7 and Eu2VO4. The magnitude of eVzzQg in Eu2VO4 is the largest ever reported for Eu2+ in any Eu oxide system.

Notes: Abstract Split source57Fe Mössbauer effect spectroscopy has been performed between 4 K and 295 K on the superconducting perovskite GdBa2Cu3O7−y. No evidence is seen for magnetic splitting at low temperatures as reported in some split absorder57Fe Mössbauer experiments on this material. There is evidence for phonon mode softening, as observed for119Sn Mössbauer spectra of some other highT c superconductors.

Notes: Abstract 61Ni Mössbauer measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on spherical Ni particles with an average diameter of 100 and 30 Å, covered with a protective layer of SiO. Their spectra contain a surface component with a significantly reduced hyperfine magnetic field as compared with the field in the bulk. This result confirms recent theoretical predictions.

Notes: Abstract 57Fe Mössbauer effect measurements have been performed at room temperature on the alloy series Al75Cu15−xFexV10 withx=0.15 (amorphous and icosahedral phases), 3 and 6 (icosahedral phases). There is more disorder in the icosahedral phase of thex=0.15 alloy than in its amorphous phase. The bimodal character of the distribution of quadrupole splittings becomes less pronounced with increasingx and disappears forx≥6. This is interpreted in terms of two classes of transition metal sites in Al-transition metal-based icosahedral alloys.

Notes: Abstract Recent57Fe and61Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy studies of Fe and Ni magnetic moments in crystalline and amorphous alloys, as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments related to Fe magnetic moments, are reviewed. It is shown that in Fe-Ni-M (M=metalloids or Zr) amorphous alloys, Ni atoms do carry a magnetic moment, similarly to crystalline Fe-Ni alloys, and that literature data indicate that amorphous iron could be polymorphic, with low- and highmoment forms. It is demonstrated that the Fe 3s multiplet splitting in the X-ray photoelectron spectra of metallic crystalline and amorphous alloys is not a reliable measure of Fe magnetic moments.
