Notes: A study has been made of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on an AlAs/GaAs/AlAs resonant tunneling diode in which the electrodes have been deliberately asymmetrically doped. In reverse bias, current is injected into the structure from a highly doped n+-GaAs electrode and in forward bias from a two-dimensional accumulation layer at the GaAs/AlAs interface. When large hydrostatic pressures are applied at 77 K, regions of negative differential resistance are induced in both bias directions. Current maxima with peak-to-valley ratios as large as 4 have been measured at 8 kbar. The intrinsic asymmetry of the structure aids in the identification of the origins of these features in terms of the X-point conduction-band minima of the device.

Notes: We report on the realization of a new type of lateral tunneling diode with the potential for ultrahigh frequency (THz) operation. The diodes, which are fabricated by etching tiny quantum trenches into the surface of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, display extremely nonlinear current-voltage characteristics. Tunneling barrier heights are obtained from a study of thermally activated current, and results are compared to those of a theoretical model of the structure based on the finite difference form of the Poisson equation.

Notes: Data presented here address the question of whether T lymphocyte recognition of Mis determinants is MHC restricted. Using isolated T cell blasts from primary MLCs involving H-2-identical, Mls-disparate strain combinations as responding cell populations in secondary MLCs, and measuring their responses against fresh stimulating cells from different strains, has permitted the study of reactions towards Mis determinants in the presence of MHC antigenic differences. Results strongly suggest that recognition of Mlsc (Mls-2 locus) determinants is H-2 restricted. In contrast, there is still little evidence that the recognition of Mlsa (Mls-1 locus) determinants is H-2 restricted. Furthermore, data are also presented which refute the notion that different H-2 haplotypes possess different abilities to present Mlsa determinants to responding T cells.

Notes: Abstract The physical processes by which materials may move within porous rocks are briefly reviewed. In impermeable rocks diffusion through the solid rock limits mass transfer. Diffusion coefficients in solids are typically of the order 10−15 to 10−8 cm2/sec and temperature-dependent. When there is no fluid convection in a permeable rock, diffusion through liquid-filled pores, with diffusion coefficients of the order 10−6 cm2/sec, will be the dominant mass transport process. Fluid convection in permeable rocks can increase mass transfer rates by many orders of magnitude. The pressure gradient in the fluid, fluid viscosity, and the specific permeability of the rock are dominant in determining the fluid velocity and mass transfer rates. The role of these transport processes in the deposition and leaching of orebodies in porous rocks is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] As water vapour pressure is uniquely related to water potential, either may be used to express energy differences in the Ohm's law analogue. Unfortunately, the permissible expression of both water potentials and water vapour concentrations in terms of pressures introduces a trap. Although Levitt's ...

Notes: Summary The hydrolysis of benzoylcholine, 0.05 mM, butyrylcholine, 10 mM, and suxamethonium, 0.025 mM, by the plasma of 10 subjects who developed prolonged apnoea following suxamethonium administered during anaesthesia, were measured. Plasmas from all available relatives in four families were similarly studied. The plasma of 3 subjects contained only atypical cholinesterase and hydrolysed suxamethonium, relative to butyrylcholine, at a rate of only 1.6% of that seen with usual human cholinesterase. One subject appeared to have only atypical cholinesterase on the basis of dibucaine and fluoride numbers. Suxamethonium hydrolysis, however, was sixteen times greater than that for the 3 homozygous atypical subjects. Family studies and inhibition of butrylcholine hydrolysis by decamethonium established that this subject was heterozygous with about 20% of the total cholinesterase in the usual form. Two other subjects were also heterozygous for usual and either atypical or fluoride resistant genes. One of them hydrolysed suxamethonium at 25% of the usual rate, but the other had a normal rate of suxamethonium hydrolysis. Four subjects had no detectable anomaly of plasma cholinesterase, and hydrolysed suxamethonium normally. The apparent affinity of suxamethonium for usual and atypical cholinesterase was also determined and the significance of measurements of the hydrolysis of suxamethonium in relation to prolonged apnoea produced by the drug is discussed.
