    Notes: Abstract Relativistic whistler wave mode with a perpendicular AC electric field has been studied for generalized distribution function with an index j, which is reducible to bi-Maxwellian for j = 0, loss-cone for j = 1 and delta function for j = ∞. Based on particle trajectories, the dispersionrelation is obtained using the techniques of a kinetic approach anda method of characteristic solutions Calculations are compassed with observations of low frequency waves of Voyager 2 The growth rates for the plasma parameters suited to the magnetosphere of Uranus are obtained. It is inferred that, not the magnitude but the frequency of the AC field, influences the growth rate. In addition to the temperature anisotropy, plasma particles having a loss-cone provide an additional source of energy. The relativistic electrons along with increasing the growth rate, widen the band width so as to cover a wide frequency range thus may explain the entire spectrum of whistler emissions at Uranian bow shock.

    Description: Infiltration is the most important aspect in the hydraulics of surface irrigation, since the design of irrigation systems depends to a large extent upon the infiltration characteristics of the soil. Many workers have contributed to the theoretical understanding of the infiltration phenomenon (Kirkham & Powers, 1972). However, very little work is available on the evaluation of infiltration into cracked soils. Measurement of infiltration into these soils poses a special problem. Depending on the degree of cracking, a fraction of the water added on the soil surface flows down through cracks and goes to waste. The water flowing through the cracks does not contribute to the moisture storage of the soil profile which may subsequently be used by the crops. Also, infiltration rates measured using ring infiltrometers are erroneous. In order to have an efficient design for an irrigation system, realistic estimates of infiltration characteristics for this type of soil are essential. In the present paper an attempt has been made to estimate the effective infiltration rate into such cracked soils. The procedvire suggested has been tested under limited conditions and found useful under field conditions. However, extensive field testing under various soil conditions is necessary before it can be recommended for general use.

    Notes: Large high-purity single crystals of FeTiO3 with ilmenite structure have been grown from a stoichiometric melt of Fe2O3 and TiO2 under an inert atmosphere using the modified Czochralski technique. Susceptibility and x-band paramagnetic resonance studies have been performed. Susceptibility measurements indicate a Néel temperature ∼59 K. The paramagnetic resonance spectrum for magnetic field perpendicular to the crystal c axis consists of a portion of a single, very intense approximately Lorentzian absorption line with its peak at about 600 G and half width at half maximum almost 1200 G. The absorption extends to zero magnetic field. For magnetic field approximately parallel to the c axis, the paramagnetic absorption is much smaller and may be considered a superposition of two approximately Lorentzian line shapes. The magnetic resonance measurements indicate a weak temperature dependence and large angular anisotropy.

    Notes: Abstract. A study was carried out to compare the impact of 6-year-old plantations of Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) D.C., Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. Ex. D.C. and Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. on the physical and chemical properties of sodic soil in the Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains of Uttar Pradesh, India. Soil properties under the three tree species showed significant improvement through a reduction in the pH, electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium percentage, CaCO3 and gypsum requirement, and by increase in organic C, total N, and available P and K. The six years of reclamation had achieved a marked reduction in exchangeable sodium (from 11.5 to 4.5 cmolc kg−1) to a depth of 1.5 m in the soil profile, whereas the levels of exchangeable calcium, magnesium and potassium had increased. There was also a significant reduction in soil bulk density (from 1.66 to 1.24 g cm−3) and increases in porosity, water holding capacity, field capacity, permeability and infiltration rate. The equilibrium infiltration rate after 455 min increased from 0.03 cm h−1 in the control to 0.13 cm h−1 under P juliflora and D. sissoo and 0.10 cm h−1 under E. tereticornis. It is concluded that salt-tolerant tree species have a significant impact on soil properties, which could help to rehabilitate the sodic wastelands in the region.

    Notes: A new electroplating technique for growing cadmium telluride films in a nonaqueous medium is reported. The influence of the deposition conditions on the structure, stoichiometry, and surface topography of the CdTe films has been discussed in light of the x-ray diffraction analysis, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy studies. Higher bath temperatures have been found to favor larger grain growth with a certain amount of orientation. The CdTe formation is not favored at temperatures 〈130 °C. The compositional analysis using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the films deposited under galvanostatic conditions are generally richer in cadmium. Nearly stoichiometric films can be deposited under potentiostatic conditions at a deposition potential of −0.8 V (with respect to Pt neutral electrodes). A uniform and regular growth of CdTe films with no sign of cracking was also observed in the surface investigations by a scanning electron microscope.

    Notes: A Monte Carlo simulation model is proposed to study the phase transition and the structural evolution of thermoreversible gels with the coexistence of phase separation and gelation processes. Our model includes the mobility of all the species and the reversibility of bonds of the clusters formed due to cross-linking reactions. These features provide a more realistic description of a polymer–solvent system. We attempt to elucidate the effects of interactions, solvents, polymer fraction, etc. on the phase behaviors of the thermoreversible gel. Sol-to-gel transition is studied in detail as a function of temperature, and the related critical exponents are evaluated. Two different energy parameters are used to describe the gelation and the melting processes. The collective structure factors are calculated, and their dynamic behaviors are analyzed. The competing effects of the phase separation and the network formation on the structural evolutions of the gel are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Conformation and dynamics of charged polymer chains in counter-ion solvent is studied by a Monte Carlo simulation in two and three dimensions. The nodes of the chains are positively charged while the solvent particles possess negative charge. The concentration of the polymer (p), and the empty sites (pe) is varied along with the temperature. Reptation, kink-jump, and a buckling governed by the interaction energy are considered in moving the chain segments. The variation of the root mean square (rms) displacement of the center of mass, and the relaxation of the radius of gyration of the chains with time are studied as a function of polymer concentration and temperature. The rms displacement of the polymer chains exhibits various power laws in different time regimes which depend on the concentration of the chains. Relaxation of the radius of gyration is enhanced on increasing the temperature; the relaxation time seems to decrease on reducing the chain length and increase on increasing the concentration. The motion of solvent particles show subdiffusive behavior which is sensitive to polymer concentration. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
