    Notes: Summary Changes in the concentration of cortisol were measured by radioimmunoassay in the blood plasma of buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). There were minor fluctuations in the level during the oestrous cycle, but the differences between the days were not significant. The study revealed that cortisol under normal conditions does not appear to be involved in the regulation of the cycle.

    Notes: Abstract Relativistic whistler wave mode with a perpendicular AC electric field has been studied for generalized distribution function with an index j, which is reducible to bi-Maxwellian for j = 0, loss-cone for j = 1 and delta function for j = ∞. Based on particle trajectories, the dispersionrelation is obtained using the techniques of a kinetic approach anda method of characteristic solutions Calculations are compassed with observations of low frequency waves of Voyager 2 The growth rates for the plasma parameters suited to the magnetosphere of Uranus are obtained. It is inferred that, not the magnitude but the frequency of the AC field, influences the growth rate. In addition to the temperature anisotropy, plasma particles having a loss-cone provide an additional source of energy. The relativistic electrons along with increasing the growth rate, widen the band width so as to cover a wide frequency range thus may explain the entire spectrum of whistler emissions at Uranian bow shock.

    Notes: Abstract Crop tolerance to land submergence is an important criterion for designing a surface drainage system for agricultural lands. This paper collates the available data from various places in India related to the studies on the submergence tolerance of crops. The paper hypothesizes that a piecewise linear model could be used to describe crop response to land submergence. According to this hypothesis, there would be no yield decline for a few initial days of submergence. If submergence continues beyond this period then there would be linear decline in yield. The unknown parameters in the model are: optimum yield, threshold time and the slope which represents the per cent yield reduction per day of additional submergence beyond the threshold. Data in respect of wheat, pigeon peas, cowpeas, pearlmillet, maize and groundnuts indicate that the model describes the data well, although in many cases the threshold is 0.0. The yield reduction varies from 5.3 to 23.2% for each day of submergence beyond the threshold. It appears that to allow for more than 1–2 days of submergence will result in more than 10% reducation in yield of dryfoot crops. For the maize crop, the seedling stage is the most sensitive stage followed by the silking stage. The grain formation stage is the least sensitive, although even at this stage the threshold is 0.0 and yield reduction is 9.3% for each day of submergence beyond the threshold. The data for 9 test crops from Texas and Venezuela were well described by the model. It is concluded that the piecewise linear model is a useful tool for describing submergence tolerance of crops and for working out surface drainage requirements for a given level of yield reduction. Frequency analysis of the daily rainfall data from some selected locations indicates that there is every likelihood of submergence at most of the stations. It is suggested that there is an urgent need for developing wet farming techniques analogous to dry farming techniques.

    Notes: Abstract In vivo acetylation of chromosomal proteins and RNA synthesis were studied in the skeletal muscle of 3–30 day old developing rats. The levels of acetylated histones and nonhistone chromosomal (NHC) proteins are high at day 3 and decrease as development progresses. Spermine has no significant effect on acetylation. Incorporation of3H-Uridine into RNA of both nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions is also maximum at day 3 and plateaus by day 14. Nuclear RNA synthesis following acetylation of chromosomal proteins is greatly stimulated in all the ages studied, whereas that in cytoplasmic RNA occurs only in 3 day old rats. Such modifications during early development may bring about conformational and functional changes in the chromatin and contribute significantly to the process of terminal differentiation of skeletal muscle cells.

    Notes: Abstract Conformational changes in the chromatin of skeletal muscle of 3-, 14-and 30 day-old developing rats have been studied using DNase I and micrococcal nuclease (MCN). Purified nuclei were digested separately by MCN and DNase I. The rate and extent of digestion by MCN decreases gradually as development proceeds. The electrophoretic pattern of MCN digested DNA, however, shows no change. The kinetics of digestion of nuclei by DNase I show no change with development. However, the electrophoretic pattern of DNase I digested DNA shows a gradual decrease in the amount of 10–30 bp fragments with progressive development. These studies show that the chromatin of the skeletal muscle undergoes certain conformational changes during postnatal development, and such changes in chromatin may be necessary for terminal differentiation of this tissue.

    Notes: Abstract Bulbochaete allahabadensis sp. nov. is described from a temporary pond at Allahabad. Most of its life-cycle stages have been observed. It differs from other known species of the genus Bulbochaete in having characteristic oospores and interesting behaviour of androspores. Andropores after liberation from normal vegetative cells may germinate anywhere and form dwarf males or produce several celled branched germlings with precocious formation of antheridia. Such zoospore-like behaviour of androspores confirms the observations made by other workers under culture conditions.
