Notes: We have synthesized two classes of polyureas with mono- and bisazoaromatic groups in their main chains via reactions between isophorone diisocyanate and the corresponding diamines. Holographic gratings were fabricated on azoaromatic polyurea films prepared by spin-coating from solutions. The effect of high glass transition temperature and dipole moment of azo groups on the formation of gratings was investigated. Although the two polymers have relatively high glass transition temperatures (197 and 236°C), chromophore alignment was induced by laser beam irradiation at modest light intensities. Regularly spaced surface relief gratings on the polymer film were also recorded upon exposure to an interference pattern of two polarized argon laser beams. Erasure could be achieved by heating above Tg or by exposure to one of the beams in a manner similar to low-Tg side-chain azo polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Porous poly(hydroxamic acid) chelating resin was prepared by the reaction with poly(ethyl acrylate) crosslinked with divinylbenzene and hydrophilic crosslinking agent, and hydroxylamine. The hydrophilic crosslinking agents and diluent used in this article were ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or butanediol dimethacrylate, and 2,2,4-trimethyl pentane, respectively. The characterization of this type chelating resin was carried out by IR spectroscopy, density measurement, and scanning electron microscopy. Various metal binding properties such as extraction, kinetics, and selectivity were investigated with atomic absorption spectrometer and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. Poly(hydroxamic acid) resins crosslinked with mixed crosslinking agents showed better metal extraction properties and faster adsorption rate than those crosslinked with divinylbenzene alone. And alkali treatment enhances the binding rate for metal ions because of the formation of other chelating ligands or micropores. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Second-order nonlinear optical copolymer containing p-hydroxyphenyl maleimide as a comonomer was newly synthesized. Second-order nonlinear optical properties of the poled films were investigated in terms of the second harmonic generation (SHG) and linear electrooptic (EO) coefficient measurement. SHG coefficient, d33 was found to be 14 pm/V at the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm and EO coefficient, r33 was found to be 25-30 pm/V at 633 nm wavelength. To prevent the orientational relaxation of poled polymer, the thermal crosslink reaction was induced using diisocyanate as a crosslinker between the side chains themselves. Temporal stabilities of second-order NLO coefficients of crosslinked polymer systems were proved much better than that of guest-host system or other side chain polymers. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Poly(hydroxamic acid) resins from crosslinked poly(ethyl acrylate)s were prepared and their metal binding properties were investigated. The metal binding capacities of this type resin for metal ions were determined at specific pH. In the acidic region, the chelating resin showed high adsorption capacity for copper, iron, vanadium, and uranium. Metal adsorption capacities varied according to polymerization condition, i.e. crosslinking ratio and degree of dilution. Equilibration rates of the chelating resins were investigated to evaluate their use as materials for chromatographic separation. Selectivity for various metals was also observed from the mixed metal solution. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Summary The synthesis and metal ion responsive properties of Congo Red-based polyamide are reported. The polymer was prepared by simple interfacial polymerization between Congo Red and sebacoyl chloride. The polymer showed decrease in electronic absorption when exposed to metal ions. The absorbance tends to decrease linearly in a measurable range according to metal ion concentration. It is found that the polymer showed high sensitivity toward Ca2+ and Fe3+.

Notes: Summary Porous poly(hydroxamic acid) resins were prepared by suspension polymerization of poly(ethyl acrylate-co-divinylbenzene) followed by the reaction with hydroxylamine via nucleophilic substitution. Various degree of dilution and crosslinking ratio were applied to obtain suitable material for use as a chelating polymer. The effects of degree of dilution and crosslinking ratio on the surface morphology, hydroxamic acid group content, and apparent density were investigated in detail.

Notes: We report the synthesis and optical properties of two different polyureas containing azo units in the main chain. The polymers were synthesized from the reaction between a diisocyanate and a diaminoazo compound (4,4′-diaminoazobenzene) with good yield. These polyureas have glass transition temperatures around 197°C and the films of these polymers show an absorption maximum at 380 nm due to the azo chromophore. Upon polarized laser irradiation at 488 nm, dichroism was optically induced in these main-chain azoaromatic polymers with a fairly high glass transition temperature. In addition we observed a degree of polar order by corona poling and a build up of second harmonic signal. It is conjectured that the induced order results mainly from an alignment of azo units through trans-cis-trans isomerization, as well as from the molecular rearrangement of the polyurea backbone. We further observed regularly-spaced surface relief gratings on the polyurea film upon exposure to an interference pattern of polarized argon laser beams. Large scale molecular migration in this high glass transition temperature (Tg) polymer at room temperature was achieved for the first time.

Notes: A new series of water-soluble conjugated aromatic polyimines containing sulfonate groups have been synthesized via polycondensation reaction between diamines and dialdehydes at room temperature. The polymers are soluble in water and N,N-dimethylformamide, giving colored solutions with absorption maxima (λmax) ranging from 400 to 480 nm. One of the polyimines (PIP) showed strong fluorescence in aqueous solution, and concentration dependence of photoluminescence has been investigated. Electrostatic self-assembly of multilayer films consisting of each polyimine as a polyanion and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) as a polycation was successfully carried out by alternate deposition in corresponding aqueous solutions.
