Notes: Summary A novel polyquinoline (PQDBP8) containing the pendent 4'-octyloxybiphenyl group in the 4-position of the quinoline ring was prepared by the acid-catalyzed polymerization (Friedländer quinoline synthesis) of 1-(4-{2-[4-amino-3-(4'-octyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyl)-phenyl]vinyl}phenyl)ethanone (6). PQDBP8 showed highly thermal stability (Td= 384 °C, Tg= 183 °C). PQDBP8 showed blue fluorescence in dilute solution (λmax= 449 nm) and green fluorescence in solid state (λmax= 494, 540 nm) due to excimer formation. EL spectrum of PQDBP8 lies in the green region (λmax= 572 nm) and PQDBP8/PVK blend film lies in the blue region (λmax= 446 nm).

Notes: Summary Two nonlinear optical (NLO) methacrylate monomers, 2-methyl-acrylic acid 2-(ethyl-{4-[2-(6-nitro-quinolin-2-yl)-vinyl]-phenyl}-amino)-ethyl ester (5) and 2-methyl-acrylic acid 6-{3-[2-(6-nitro-quinolin-2-yl)-vinyl]-carbazol-9-yl}-hexyl ester (7) were newly synthesized and copolymerized with methylmethacrylate to give NLO polymers, P1 and P2. These polymers were well soluble in organic solvents and showed glass transition temperatures at 145 °C and 114 °C, respectively. The number average molecular weights (Mn) were 26,600 for P1 and 9,300 for P2. The SHG coefficients (d33) of corona-poled films of P1 and P2 measured with 1.064 μm Nd-YAG laser were 32.2 pm/V and 17.6 pm/V, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The structure and properties of ternary blends of epoxy with poly(ether sulphone) (PES) and carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber (CTBN) have been investigated. In these blends, the phase separation occurs in two stages: a macrophase separation during mixing and a microphase separation during curing. At low PES compositions, the PES-rich spherical domains are dispersed. With increasing PES composition, a co-continuous structure develops and, eventually, the phases are inverted. Regardless of structure change, the modulus and yield stress changes with composition just follow the simple rule of mixtures. However, the fracture toughness of these blends exhibits a synergistic effect. Among the various compositions, 5∶5 weight ratio of CTBN to PES exhibited the maximum toughness, which was 140% larger than that calculated from the rule of mixtures. The synergism is believed to be due to the bridging by the PES-rich phase followed by a lowering of the yield stress. The lowering of the yield stress can enlarge the process zone size and the amount of plastic dilatation of the matrix.

Notes: New heteroaromatic polymer containing quinoline unit in the main chain, poly[2,6-(p-phenoxy)-4-phenyl quinoline] (PQ), was synthesized by the acid-catalyzed self-condensation reaction [Friedländer quinoline synthesis] of 4-amino-4′-acetyl-3-benzoyldiphenyl ether, and its chemical structure was characterized by IR and NMR spectra and also by elemental analysis. The PQ was soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform or tetrahydrofuran; thus a strong coherent film of this polymer could be easily prepared from the solution by the casting or spin-coating technique. Attributing to the wholly aromatic chemical structure, PQ appeared an extremely high thermal stability as to show no weight loss up to 550°C both in air and nitrogen atmosphere. From the UV-VIS absorption spectra, we found that PQ had a strong tendency to form the charge transfer (CT) complex with electron acceptors such as 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF). The CT complex film of PQ-TNF showed a good photoconductivity even under the ambient room illumination and was utilized for the fabrication of photovoltaic device whose conversion efficiency was around 10-2%.

Notes: Porous poly(hydroxamic acid) chelating resin was prepared by the reaction with poly(ethyl acrylate) crosslinked with divinylbenzene and hydrophilic crosslinking agent, and hydroxylamine. The hydrophilic crosslinking agents and diluent used in this article were ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or butanediol dimethacrylate, and 2,2,4-trimethyl pentane, respectively. The characterization of this type chelating resin was carried out by IR spectroscopy, density measurement, and scanning electron microscopy. Various metal binding properties such as extraction, kinetics, and selectivity were investigated with atomic absorption spectrometer and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer. Poly(hydroxamic acid) resins crosslinked with mixed crosslinking agents showed better metal extraction properties and faster adsorption rate than those crosslinked with divinylbenzene alone. And alkali treatment enhances the binding rate for metal ions because of the formation of other chelating ligands or micropores. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Graft copolymers of acrylonitrile (AN)-styrene (ST) onto polybutadiene were prepared via emulsion polymerization method using a redox initiator system, cumene hydroperoxide-tetrasodium pyrophosphate-ferrous sulfate-dextrose. The effects of initiator, reaction temperature, reaction time, polymer/grafting monomer ratio, and monomer dropping frequency on the graft copolymerization reaction were investigated. Transmission electron micrographs confirmed that the synthesized particles had a core-shell shaped structure. The powdery core-shell shaped poly(butadiene-g-AN-ST) particles with various AN contents in their shells and with different shell thicknesses were prepared, which can be incorporated into brittle epoxy resin as impact modifier. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Poly(hydroxamic acid) resins from crosslinked poly(ethyl acrylate)s were prepared and their metal binding properties were investigated. The metal binding capacities of this type resin for metal ions were determined at specific pH. In the acidic region, the chelating resin showed high adsorption capacity for copper, iron, vanadium, and uranium. Metal adsorption capacities varied according to polymerization condition, i.e. crosslinking ratio and degree of dilution. Equilibration rates of the chelating resins were investigated to evaluate their use as materials for chromatographic separation. Selectivity for various metals was also observed from the mixed metal solution. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: New liquid crystalline monomers having 1,3,4-thiadiazole ring as mesogen were synthesized by using Lawesson's reagents to prepare the thiadiazole ring and acryloyl chloride and methacryloyl chloride to introduce the vinyl group. These monomers were polymerized in the presence of 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile as initiator in THF. All monomers and polymers show cholesteric behavior and a broad chiral smectic C* phase. As the spacer length increases, the phase transition temperature is lowered and the polymers show higher phase transition temperatures and improved mesophase stabilities compared to the corresponding monomers.

Notes: Four methacrylate monomers, 2a-2d, containing a quinoline ring with a NO2 or a OCH3 group at the end of the mesogen were synthesized and polymerized. The copolymers with six methylene units as spacer, 3b-3d, showed a smectic phase induced by electron donor-acceptor interactions of the side groups. The homopolymer with eleven methylene units as spacer and methoxy end group, 3f, showed a smectic phase induced by the large length of the spacer. The copolymers with eleven methylene units, 3g-3i, showed a smectic phase induced by both the electron donor-acceptor interactions of the side groups and the large length of the spacer.

Notes: Polyoxime-urethanes have been synthesized from dioximes and diisocyanates, and their structures have been ascertained by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. They can be represented by the general formula: These polymer films were photolyzed by using a high-pressure 100-W mercury lamp, and the rate of decomposition of the N—O bond was determined by use of ultraviolet and infrared spectra, or comparing the photochemical behavior with that of corresponding model compounds. Upon irradiating these polymers in the presence or absence of sensitizers or a hydrogen donor, there were obtained photolyzed polymers of low molecular weight, of which the molecular weights were estimated by observing the viscosity changes. To deduce the mechanism of photodegradation of polyoxime-urethane, photolysis of benzophenone oxime-phenyl urethane was investigated as a model compound.
