    Notes: Summary Mycorrhization of Picea abies has been achieved, for the first time, with six strains of Suillus grevillei by a new culture method, using activated charcoal paper and liquid medium as a substrate. Mycorrhization of P. abies and Larix decidua was compared, and the process was found to be significantly different in the two tree species. S. grevillei is not incompatible with P. abies, but it forms mycorrhizae more readily with L. decidua. Hyphal growth was clearly stimulated on the surface of roots of Larix but retarded on Picea. A well organized Hartig net was formed with both tree species, but wall protuberances were frequently observed on the outer cell walls of Picea cortex cells when the Hartig net was not fully developed. No conspicuous cell wall reactions occurred in Larix roots. Cell wall protuberances may be comparable to those in transfer cells and are interpreted as an alternative to Hartig net development. Anatomical differences between roots of Larix and Picea, and physiologically active substances such as recognition factors on the root surfaces, are discussed with respect to their responsibility for the different reactions of S. grevillei.

    Notes: Summary The differentiation of the endodermis of mycorrhizal roots of Picea abies and Larix decidua was investigated by means of light and transmission electron microscopy and with fluorescence techniques. The initiation and differentiation of the Hartig net were recorded. Differences between the two tree species were found, as were differences between the two tree species and angiosperms. The Casparian band developed immediately after the origin of endodermal cells from the meristem in mycorrhizae of both tree species. In L. decidua only the primary endodermis was present in most mycorrhizal laterals. The secondary structure of the endodermis was restricted to main roots and proximal parts of larch mycorrhizae. In P. abies mycorrhizae, however, the secondary stage of the endodermis developed soon after the primary endodermis and was characterized by regular alternation of short, active passage cells and elongated, rapidly degenerating cells, the inner surface of which was covered by a thick suberin layer. Hartig net development started in P. abies short roots only after the differentiation of endodermis into the secondary stage, whereas in L. decidua, the Hartig net was already initiated at the primary endodermal stage. Differences were specific for tree species.

    Notes: Abstract The techniques of 27Al- and 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were used to investigate the interactions of aluminium with intracellular ligands within the mycelium of the ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor (Maire) Orton (S238). The vegetative mycelium was grown on medium containing 0.5 mM AlCl3 for 0.5 to 3 d. The 27Al-NMR spectra showed that aluminium was rapidly taken up and accumulated into polyphosphate complexes in the vacuole. Comparison with Al-polyphosphate complexes obtained in vitro on model systems indicated that Al forms at least three mixed-solvation complexes with Pi and polyphosphates, that there is more than one complex present under any set of conditions, and that the equilibrium between these complexes shifts dramatically with Al concentration in the medium. The high phosphate concentrations in the growth medium favoured the accumulation of the Al-polyphosphate complexes. When mycelium containing Al-polyphosphate complexes was transferred to Al-free nutrient solution for 9 d, the Alpolyphosphate complexes were not remobilized. The sequestration of Al in the polyphosphate complexes could therefore make a significant contribution to the protection of mycorrhizal plants against aluminium toxicity.

    Notes: Abstract The occurrence and amount of soluble and insoluble phenolics in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal roots of Picea abies (L.) Karst, were investigated, p-Hydroxybenzoic acid glucoside, picein, piceatannol and its glucoside, isorhapontin, catechin and ferulic acid could be identified by high-performance liquid chromatography in mycorrhizas of Picea abies-Lactarius deterrimus and Picea abies-Laccaria amethystea. Both types were collected from axenic cultures and the latter also from a spruce stand. The same phenolics occurred in non-mycorrhizal short roots from sterile cultures. However, the amounts of p-hydroxybenzoic acid glucoside, picein, catechin and cell wall-bound ferulic acid were considerably reduced in mycorrhizas from axenic culture, whereas the hydroxystilbenes piceatannol, its glucoside and worhapontin were not significantly reduced. Pure mycelia of Laccaria amethystea (Bull.) Murr, and Lactarius deterrimus Gröger were also analysed for phenolic compounds. Both fungal species contained none of the identified phenolics. The results are discussed with respect to mycorrhization in different mycorrhizal types.

    Notes: Summary Anatomy and ultrastructure of the arbutoid mycorrhiza of Arbutus unedo-Laccaria amethystea from axenic culture are described. In comparison to non-inoculated roots, the rhizodermal cells of mycorrhizas are of greater volume, their nuclei are enlarged and show an irregular shape, plasmalemma and cytoplasm with mitochondria, plastids, endoplasmic reticulum and dictyosomes are increased. Several ontogenetical states are documented. The arbutoid mycorrhiza as a connecting link between ectomycorrhiza and ericoid mycorrhiza is discussed.

    Notes: Das Wurzelsystem der Bäume ist in Grob-, Schwach-, Fein- und Feinstwurzeln gegliedert. Während den Grob- und Schwachwurzeln im wesentlichen die Verankerung des Baumes im Boden und die Stoffleitung zukommen, dient das Feinwurzelsystem mit seinen feinsten Verästelungen der Wasser- und Nährstoffaufnahme. Bei der Mehrzahl unserer Waldbäume, insbesondere den forstwirtschaftlich wichtigen Nadelbäumen sowie Buchen und Eichen, sind die Feinstwurzeln mykorrhiziert, d. h. sie leben in Symbiose mit Pilzen. Dabei werden die Feinstwurzeln morphologisch und funktionell so verändert, daß die Stoffaufnahme aus dem Boden über die Pilzhyphen erfolgt, die funktionell die Wurzelhaare ersetzen. Für die Bewertung der Funktionsfähigkeit oder Schädigung der Feinstwurzeln der Waldbäume dürfen daher die sie begleitenden Pilze nicht außer acht gelassen werden. Bei der Untersuchung der Feinstwurzeln geschädigter Fichten und Tannen fanden wir: 1eine überraschende Stabilität der Mykorrhizaentwicklung2Unterschiede in der Dynamik der Entwicklung und3Veränderungen in der Zusammensetzung der begleitenden Mikropilze.Die Ergebnisse lassen Zusammenhänge in der Ursachenkette von Waldschäden vermuten, die bisher kaum beachtet worden sind.
