    Description: The complex refractive index of graphene fabricated using chemical vapor deposition is characterized at 1550 nm wavelength through the reflectivity measurement on a SiO 2 /Si substrate. The observed tunability of the complex reflective index as the function of gate electric voltage is in agreement with the prediction based on the Kubo formula.

    Description: The role of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) in adult hearts is unknown; also unclear is how lncRNA modulates nucleosome remodelling. An estimated 70% of mouse genes undergo antisense transcription, including myosin heavy chain 7 (Myh7), which encodes molecular motor proteins for heart contraction. Here we identify a cluster of lncRNA transcripts from Myh7 loci and demonstrate a new lncRNA-chromatin mechanism for heart failure. In mice, these transcripts, which we named myosin heavy-chain-associated RNA transcripts (Myheart, or Mhrt), are cardiac-specific and abundant in adult hearts. Pathological stress activates the Brg1-Hdac-Parp chromatin repressor complex to inhibit Mhrt transcription in the heart. Such stress-induced Mhrt repression is essential for cardiomyopathy to develop: restoring Mhrt to the pre-stress level protects the heart from hypertrophy and failure. Mhrt antagonizes the function of Brg1, a chromatin-remodelling factor that is activated by stress to trigger aberrant gene expression and cardiac myopathy. Mhrt prevents Brg1 from recognizing its genomic DNA targets, thus inhibiting chromatin targeting and gene regulation by Brg1. It does so by binding to the helicase domain of Brg1, a domain that is crucial for tethering Brg1 to chromatinized DNA targets. Brg1 helicase has dual nucleic-acid-binding specificities: it is capable of binding lncRNA (Mhrt) and chromatinized--but not naked--DNA. This dual-binding feature of helicase enables a competitive inhibition mechanism by which Mhrt sequesters Brg1 from its genomic DNA targets to prevent chromatin remodelling. A Mhrt-Brg1 feedback circuit is thus crucial for heart function. Human MHRT also originates from MYH7 loci and is repressed in various types of myopathic hearts, suggesting a conserved lncRNA mechanism in human cardiomyopathy.     Notes: Since the electron cyclotron auto-resonance maser (CARM) is operated with the wave refractive index being very close to unity, a little variation of the refractive index in the CARM calculations might be crucial. Therefore, a modified self-consistent one-dimensional nonlinear model was developed by exactly setting the evolving wave refractive index and keeping all second-order terms to examine the inadequacy induced by the simplification of the earlier one-dimensional models. Comparisons of the numerical results obtained by the earlier models and the modified model for a CARM amplifier reveal that the inadequate relaxation of the limited azimuthal and axial bunching region for electrons to lose energy in the earlier models was the main reason for the overestimate of the linear gain and the saturated efficiency for the fast (the slow) wave branch with initial refractive index n0〈1 (n0〉1). However, the earlier model with fixed n0=1 is an excellent approximation whatever linear or saturated state is considered. The efficiency dependence of a CARM amplifier on some basic operating parameters was reexamined by the modified formulations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The nature of ion bombardment damage on Si surface barriers has been studied with 20-keV, variable-dose Ar ion implantation and controlled removal of the damaged Si surface layers prior to Schottky metallization. The electrical properties of resultant Al/p-Si Schottky diodes are found to be insensitive to the removal of the first few tens of nm of Si, and subsequent etching of over 100 nm is needed to restore the Schottky barrier height. Low-temperature I-V characteristics of these devices further reveal the presence of ion damage-induced polycrystalline regions, confirming recent observations under high-resolution electron microscopy.

    Description: Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) is the major fetal growth hormone in mammals. We identify zinc finger protein 568 (ZFP568), a member of the rapidly evolving Kruppel-associated box–zinc finger protein (KRAB-ZFP) family linked primarily to silencing of endogenous retroelements, as a direct repressor of a placental-specific Igf2 transcript (designated Igf2-P0 ) in mice. Loss of Zfp568 , which causes gastrulation failure, or mutation of the ZFP568-binding site at the Igf2-P0 promoter causes inappropriate Igf2-P0 activation. Deletion of Igf2 can completely rescue Zfp568 gastrulation phenotypes through late gestation. Our data highlight the exquisite selectivity with which members of the KRAB-ZFP family repress their targets and identify an additional layer of transcriptional control of a key growth factor regulating fetal and placental development.
