    Notes: The possession of the histocompatibility antigen HL-A8 has been correlated with serum levels of antibodies to gluten and a variety of other dietary, viral, and bacterial antigens and autoantigens. The only significant correlation with HL-A8 was of raised levels of gluten antibody. Thus it seems that HL-A8 may be associated with an enhanced immune response specifically to gluten, and not with a generally enhanced immunological responsiveness as has been suggested.

    Notes: Summary The effect of captopril on skin response to intradermal injection of bradykinin was investigated by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and weal and flare measurements in this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over balanced study. Intradermal injections of 1 and 2.5 µg of bradykinin and normal saline were made into the forearm skin of six healthy volunteers between 1 and 2 h (t1) and between 3 and 4 h (t2) after either 25 mg captopril or placebo. Skin blood flow outside the induced weal was monitored continuously by LDF for 15 min and the mean LDF values over the last 15 s were used for analysis. Weal and flare sizes were measured at 15 min. On the placebo days, the mean LDF output, weal volume and flare area increased with incremental bradykinin dose. Pre-treatment with captopril significantly increased LDF output following intradermal bradykinin at t1 but not at t2. At both t1 and t2, captopril significantly increased weal volume. There was no significant difference between treatments in flare areas. Skin response following intradermal normal saline, measured by the above parameters, was not affected by captopril. This study showed that captopril potentiated the effects of intradermal bradykinin both with respect to blood flow changes and weal formation. The non-invasive technique of LDF can be used to detect the skin blood flow changes induced by intradermal bradykinin and the potentiation of this effect by captopril. It appears to be a useful and more objective method of quantifying local cutaneous blood flow changes than measurement of flare area.

    Notes: Summary The presence of cold sensitivity was investigated in three groups of patients; untreated hypertensives and hypertensives treated by a beta-adrenoceptor blocker (propranolol) or by a combined alpha-and beta-adrenoceptor blocker (labetalol) at two ambient temperatures. At a comfortable ambient (24°C) one-third of the untreated and those treated with beta-blockade only showed cold sensitivity as compared with 16% of patients on the combined therapy. Under conditions of mild cold stress (20°C) cold sensitivity increased in frequency in all three groups, more than half of the untreated and beta-blocked patients were affected and greater than one-third of those with alpha- and beta-blockade. These findings indicate that in the general population of hypertensives treatment with beta-adrenoceptor blockade alone may have little effect on the peripheral vasculature and that a useful degree of protection may be provided by therapy which blocks both receptors.

    Notes: Summary The effects of indomethacin and captopril on local cutaneous blood flow changes and weal induced by intradermal injections of bradykinin were assessed in two randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies in healthy volunteers. Alterations in cutaneous blood flow were estimated by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and erythema area. LDF output, erythema area and weal volume increased with incremental bradykinin dose. Single doses of indomethacin 25 mg and 75 mg did not affect these cutaneous responses compared with placebo. Captopril 25 mg significantly potentiated the increase in local cutaneous blood flow measured by LDF, but not erythema area, and weal volume induced by bradykinin. The effects of the combined treatment of indomethacin 75 mg and captopril 25 mg were not significantly different from those due to captopril alone. The enhanced cutaneous effects of bradykinin following administration of captopril are in keeping with effective kininase II inhibition in the tissues. Cyclo-oxygenase products release does not appear to contribute to the cutaneous actions of bradykinin nor the potentiation of these responses by captopril.

    Notes: Abstract Strain gauge plethysmography (SGP) is a non-invasive method used in the detection of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). The technique is based on the measurement of calf volume changes in response to venous occlusion by a thigh cuff, the volume changes reflecting the rates of arterial inflow and venous outflow. A numerical model of the blood circulation within the limb and the response of this to a SGP test has been derived, based on treating the different parts of the circulatory system in the leg as resistance and capacitance elements. The simulation results were compared with clinical studies and support the ability of SGP to detect non-occlusive clots of more than 50–60% of the lumen, as well detecting calf vein pressure appears to be a particularly important factor within the model. In addition, increases in venous tone due to post-operative venospasm were shown to be a potential source of false positive results.

    Notes: Recent developments in extrudable composite propellant technology enable higher energy/density formulations and novel charges to be successfully manufactured, which cannot be produced by castable composite technology processes. These also offer substantial capital, labour and time savings in certain production applications.New heavy duty processing machines have been developed recently, which have been used successfully for the safe and efficient manufacture of new high energy/fast burning rate composite propellants, using batch and continuous processes. These include injection flow forming techniques and die extrusion processes for filling rocket motors. A range of non-energetic binder systems based on non-curing plastic, curing HTPB and TPE binder systems have been successfully manufactured.

    Description: We analyse a time series of optical spectra of SN 2014J from almost two weeks prior to maximum to nearly four months after maximum. We perform our analysis using the synow code, which is well suited to track the distribution of the ions with velocity in the ejecta. We show that almost all of the spectral features during the entire epoch can be identified with permitted transitions of the common ions found in normal supernovae (SNe) Ia in agreement with previous studies. We show that 2014J is a relatively normal SN Ia. At early times the spectral features are dominated by Si  ii , S  ii , Mg  ii , and Ca  ii . These ions persist to maximum light with the appearance of Na  i and Mg  i . At later times iron-group elements also appear, as expected in the stratified abundance model of the formation of normal Type Ia SNe. We do not find significant spectroscopic evidence for oxygen, until 100 d after maximum light. The +100 d identification of oxygen is tentative, and would imply significant mixing of unburned or only slight processed elements down to a velocity of 6000 kms –1 . Our results are in relatively good agreement with other analyses in the infrared. We briefly compare SN 2011fe to SN 2014J and conclude that the differences could be due to different central densities at ignition or differences in the C/O ratio of the progenitors.

    Description: We present the intensive spectroscopic follow up of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2014J in the starburst galaxy M82. Twenty-seven optical spectra have been acquired from 2014 January 22 to September 1 with the Isaac Newton and William Herschel Telescopes. After correcting the observations for the recession velocity of M82 and for Milky Way and host galaxy extinction, we measured expansion velocities from spectral line blueshifts and pseudo-equivalent width of the strongest features in the spectra, which gives an idea on how elements are distributed within the ejecta. We position SN 2014J in the Benetti, Branch et al. and Wang et al. diagrams. These diagrams are based on properties of the Si ii features and provide dynamical and chemical information about the SN ejecta. The nearby SN 2011fe, which showed little evidence for reddening in its host galaxy, is shown as a reference for comparisons. SN 2014J is a border-line object between the Core-normal and Broad-line groups, which corresponds to an intermediate position between low-velocity gradient and high-velocity gradient objects. SN 2014J follows the $R({\rm Si\,{\small {II}}})$ – m 15 correlation, which confirms its classification as a relatively normal SN Ia. Our description of the SN Ia in terms of the evolution of the pseudo-equivalent width of various ions as well as the position in the various diagrams put this specific SN Ia into the overall sample of SN Ia.
