Notes: Abstract Vitamin analysis was carried out on five microalgae used in aquaculture:Tetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri, Skeletonema costatum andChaetoceros calcitrans and one macroalga,Sargassum muticum, which is invasive on the Atlantic shores of France. Both liposoluble (provitamin A, E, K) and hydrosoluble (B1, B2, B6, B12, C, PP) vitamins were quantified. For most of them, greater amounts were obtained in the algal products than in the usual sources. On a dry weight basis,Tetraselmis suecica contained 4280 μg g−1 provitamin A and 6323 μg g−1 vitamin E,Pavlova lutheri 1162 μg g−1 vitamin B12 and 837 μg g−1 vitamin C,Isochrysis galbana 2690 μg g−1 vitamin PP and 183 μg g−1 vitamin B6, andSkeletonema costatum 710 μg g−1 vitamin B1.

Notes: Abstract The HPLC separation of fluorescent o-phtaldialdehyde (OPA) derivatives has been applied to the assay of free amino acids from five microalgae commonly used in aquaculture: Tetraselmis suecica, Skeletonema costatum, Chaetoceros calcitrans, Thalassiosira sp. and Isochrysis galbana, as part an assessment of their potential use in cosmetic products. Thirteen free amino acids were analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. There were considerable differences between species. However, four amino acids were responsible for more than 60% total concentration in all species: ASP, GLU, ARG and TYR; the next most important (accounting for less than 30%) were: ALA, VAL, PHE and LYS.

Notes: Abstract The floodplain of the river Ill in the Alsace Rhine valley is used as a model to study river-groundwater exchange process. Groundwater-fed streams located in the Ill floodplain are analysed using three methods: an analytical method based on hydrochemical variables (Cl− NO3 −, PO 4 3− and NH4 +), a phytosociological one based on surveys of aquatic macrophyte communities and a biological method based on the accumulation of mercury in the moss Fontinalis antipyretica. The results show that the eutrophicated and polluted river Ill (660 µg l−1 N-NH4 +, 500 µg l−1 P-PO 4 3− , 0.3–0.4 mg Hg kg− dry weight of moss) has a negative effect on the groundwater via the bed, depending on the level of the river bed in relation to the groundwater table level. Upstream of Colmar in the south of the Alsace floodplain, the Ill waters infiltrate and contaminate the groundwater, but this is not the case further downstream. Along a stretch of the Ill (40 km) annual floods provide eutrophicated and polluted waters to the aquifer. However these waters are purified during their transfer through the soil-vegetation system. Thus in the groundwater-fed streams the water is characterised by a low level of phosphate, ammonium nitrogen and mercury (10–20 µg l−1 N-NH4 + and P-PO 4 3− , 〈 0.05 mg Hg kg−1 dry weight of moss). We demonstrate the importance of a functional floodplain in replenishing the aquifer with poor-nutrient waters. The aquatic vegetation of groundwater-fed streams reflects the water quality and thus can be used as a bioindicator and descriptor of river-groundwater exchange process.

Notes: Abstract The recent canalisation (in the nineteen sixties) of the upper Rhine has modified the exchange processes between the river and its groundwater in the floodplain of Alsace. The Rhine seeps through its gravelly bed and in this way feeds the nearby groundwater table by means of the so-called ‘Rhine filtrates’. Using a few groundwater stream examples, this paper presents the characterization and localisation of these infiltrations. The Rhine filtrates are characterized by a high level of chloride and a low level of nitrate, these compounds being hydrological tracers, specific for the Alsatian floodplain (chloride resulting from contamination by the potash mines in the south of Alsace). They are also defined by high levels of phosphate and mercury (very localized injection). Phosphate is responsible for eutrophication which is observable in the appearance of specific aquatic macrophyte communities. Groundwater contamination by mercury is reflected by its accumulation in the bryophyte Fontinalis antipyretica sampled in ground-water streams. Thus aquatic vegetation, and more particularly the distribution of macrophyte communities, is used as an ecological descriptor of the exchange between the Rhine and its groundwater. The maximum injection of Rhine filtrates occurs between two areas of stillwater (hydroelectric dams), where the Rhine dominates its plain and where the substrate is constituted of coarse gravels.

Notes: The one-electron oxidation chemistry of three diaryl-substituted enols, 1,1-dimesityl-1-propen-2-ol (7), 1,2-dimesityl-1-propen-1-ol (8), and 2-mesityl-2-phenylethenol (9), has been examined. As a consequence of the pronounced steric shielding around the β-carbon, 7 does not react with nucleophiles upon addition of 2 eq. of oxidant, but cyclizes to yield benzofuran 18. Under identical conditions, the less shielded enols 8 and 9 react with methanol and other nucleophiles. Several mechanistic hypotheses for nucleophile incorporation are tested, thus allowing the second part of the α-umpolung reaction of ketones via enol cation radicals to be elucidated mechanistically. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry studies (2000 V · s-1) show no reversible wave of the enol cation radicals. The corresponding methyl enol ether cation radicals, however, have a lifetime of several seconds at -10°C, and the kinetics of their reactions with acetonitrile and methanol was probed. The results obtained are consistent with fast deprotonation being the primary reaction of enol cation radicals. Under the given oxidative conditions the radicals formed are further oxidized. Consequently one-electron oxidation of enols provides an interesting entry to α-carbonyl carbocation chemistry.

Notes: An improved synthetic access for the construction of 4,6,7-trimethylbenzofurans (B1-B8) through the one-electron oxidation of mesityl-substituted enols (E1-E8) is presented. The transformation can be accomplished in good to excellent yields by using various oxidants; i.e. tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(III) hexafluorophosphate, FeCl3, Ce(NH4)2(NO3)6, Cu(OTf)2/Cu2O or anodic oxidation.
