Notes: The new monomer 2,2-bis[4-(4-{4-fluorobenzoyl}-1-naphthoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane (2) was synthesized in a two-step reaction sequence. 2,2-his[4-(1-naphthoxy)phenyl]-hexafluoropropane (1) was prepared using the Ullmann ether synthesis reaction of 4,4-(hex-afluoroisopropylidiene)diphenol with 1-bromonaphthalene. Friedel-Crafts acylation of 1 with 4-fluorobenzoyl chloride in methylene chloride containing dimethylsulfone selectively afforded 2 in 82% yield. The polycondensation of 2 with various bisphenols in DMAc in the presence of an excess of potassium carbonate as a condensation reagent was carried out at 165°C to quantitatively afford the corresponding fluorinated poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing 1,4-naphthalene moieties. Thermal analysis of the polymers showed them to have Tgs ranging from 194 to 230°C and to be thermally stable in air up with initial weight losses at about 500°C. In addition, these novel polymers exhibited excellent solubility in organic solvents including NMP, DMAc, and chloroform. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The resolution of the H-1 antihistamines chloropheniramine, dimethindene, carbinoxamine, and mebrophenhydramine is described. The optical purity of antipodal products is investigated by chiral HPLC (use of α1 -acid glycoprotein and β-cyclodextrin columns) and NMR (spectra of β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes). Configurational relationships among the group are reviewed and assignments are confirmed and extended by circular dichroism evidence. Affinity constants of antipodal pairs for guinea pig ileum and cerebellum sites, determined by gut bath and binding experiments respectively, are reported together with some in vivo tests in man for central effects. Results are discussed in terms of configurational requirements for activity and variations in antipodal potency ratios within the group. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A series of new poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole-amide)s containing pendent imide groups has been synthesized by solution polycondensation of aromatic diamines containing preformed 1,3,4-oxadiazole rings with two diacid chlorides containing imide rings. These polymers were also prepared by the reaction of the same diacid chlorides with p-aminobenzhydrazide which were subsequently cyclodehydrated in solid state. The polymers were soluble in polar amidic solvents and some of them gave transparent flexible films by casting from solutions. They showed high thermal stability with decomposition temperatures above 400°C and glass transition temperatures in the range of 245-327°C. They had low dielectric constants, in the range of 3.32-3.94, and good tensile properties.

Notes: Two unusual sulphur-containing amino acids have been isolated from urine of a baby who died with major physical malformations and failure of growth and development. Sensitive mass spectrometric methods were used to identify the nanomole quantities of the compounds available as S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteine and S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteamine. Incubation of fibroblasts in either [14C]valine or [35S]cysteine resulted in radioactive labelling of the compounds, suggesting their origin from conjugation of methacrylic acid with cysteine and subsequent decarboxylation of the cysteine conjugate. Specific assay of methacrylyl-CoA hydratase is needed for final proof that this is a new inborn error of that enzyme, but these findings and parental consanguinity make this very likely. It seems possible that methacrylic acid or one of its derivatives may have caused the malformations present in the baby.

Notes: A series of fluorinated polyimides and fluorinated poly(imide amide)s containing pendent cyano groups were prepared and investigated to determine their dielectric constants as a function of relative humidity and thermal characteristics. The fluorinated polymides and fluorinated poly(imide amide)s containing pendent cyano groups were prepared by reaction of bis(4-aminophenoxy) benzonitriles with a fluorinated dianhydride and with a fluorinated di(acid chloride) containing preformed imide rings. The properties of the fluorinated polyimides and fluorinated poly(imide amide)s containing pendent cyano groups were compared with those of fluorinated polyimides and fluorinated poly(imide amide)s prepared from 1,3-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene. The introduction of the pendent cyano groups caused an increase in the dielectric constant and an increase in the glass transition temperature of the polymers compared with the polymers prepared without pendent cyano groups.

Notes: New poly(benzoxazole-imide)s have been prepared by polycondensation of bis(o-aminophenol)s, such as 3,3′ dihydroxybenzidine or 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-hexafluoropropane, with diacid chlorides containing both imide and hexafluoroisopropylidene groups. The soluble polymer precursor resulting from the first step of polycondensation in N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) at low temperature was processed into thin flexible films, which were then thermally treated to reach the fully cyclized structure of poly(benzoxazole-imide)s, as observed by infrared spectra. An alternative way to produce the cyclization was by heating at reflux the solution of polymer precursor in NMP. Thermal stability, glass transition temperature, dielectric constant and its dependence on relative humidity have been studied and compared with those of related polybenzoxazoles and other heterocyclic Polymers.

Notes: A method based on the use of 13C-NMR relative peak intensity ratios for different characteristic chemical groups known or supposed to contribute to melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resins strength is presented. The method relates results obtained by NMR analysis of liquid MF resins with their strength in the resin hardened state. Sets of correlation equations are presented which can be used to predict some of the physical properties of a hardened MF resin from the 13C-NMR spectrum of the liquid MF resin. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A general method for the preparation of aromatic poly(ether ketone)s containing amide, amide-imide, cyano, oxadiazole, and pyridazine moieties has been developed. Polymerization is based on a ketone-activated halide displacement from amide-, amide-, imide-, cyano-, oxadiazole-, or pyridazine-containing bis(4-fluorobenzoyl) moieties by bisphenoxides in a polar aprotic solvent. The bis(4-fluorobenzoyl) moieties were prepared by reaction of 4-fluorobenzoyl chloride with diphenoxy monomers containing amide, amide-imide, cyano, oxadiazole, or pyridazine groups under modified Friedel-Crafts conditions in methylene chloride. All of the polyether ketones prepared were amorphous and exhibited Tgs ranging from 134 to 218°C. In addition, films of the aromatic polyether ketones displayed good thermal stability and flexibility. The dielectric constants of the films were characterized as a function of relative humidity (RH). © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A method based on the use of 13C-NMR relative peak intensity rations for different characteristic chemical groups, known or supposed to contribute to melamine-urea-formal-dehyde (MUF) resin strength and formaldehyde emission, is presented. The method relates results obtained by 13C-NMR analysis of liquid MUF resins with their strength and form aldehyde emission in the resin hardened state. Sets of correlation equations are presented which can be used to predict some of the physical properties of a hardened MUF resin by studying the 13C-NMR peak ratios of well-defined chemical groups in the liquid MUF resin. A true class of MUF resins, with characteristics all of their own, appear only to exist in the copolymers in which the mass ratio of M: U is in the approximate range 55 : 45 to 34 : 66, mass ratios outside this range resulting in resins which behave almost as pure melamine or as pure urea resins. Contrary to what was found for MUF glue mixes in which lower condensation pre-resins are used as scavengers and accelerators, in pure MUF resins, the ratios of NMR peaks of the downfield substituted and unsubstituted triazine and urea signals, while still important, do not exclusively dominate the correlation equations, other chemical groups such as methylene (Me), methylol (Mo), and methylene ether groups assuming considerable importance. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
