    Notes: The variable-temperature proton nmr spectra of the oligoribonucleotides in the series CpApX and the series ApGpX, X = A, G, C, U, together with the parent dimers CpA and ApG have been measured. A complete analysis of all the nonexchangeable base proton resonances and ribose H-1′ proton resonances was made. The presence of trends in the shielding abilities of the various bases at both the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor positions were identified. The observed shieldings could be used to predict the chemical shifts of protons in related systems. Based on the empirical results from ribodinucleoside monophosphates, the temperature-dependent behavior of the J1′2′ coupling constants of the triribonucleotides suggested that the compounds in the CpApX series stacked from the 5′-end to the 3′-end, while those in the ApGpX series stacked from the 3′-end to the 5′-end.

    Notes: Standard epoxy resins have good mechanical properties, but their prolonged low temperature curing time limits their potential use in clinical applications as well as in many industrial applications. A fast-curing epoxy-episulfide resin has been developed. The gel time of epoxy-episulfide made from EPONTrade mark of Shell Chemical Company. 828 ranges from 2 to 10 minutes by changing the ratio of the ingredients. The heat of reaction of this system is low, resulting in low cure shrinkage. Water absorption of the episulfide network is low. The epoxy-episulfide system cured with polyamide curing agent V-40 exhibits two transition temperatures, at about 85°C and 130°C, as shown in dynamic mechanical analysis data. In order to solve the long term stability problem of the above episulfides, and also the mixing problem, a lower viscosity resin, Eponex, was used to make Eponex-sulfide. Eponex-sulfide systems show promise in that they remain in a stable liquid form without epoxy. The other advantages appear to be retained.

    Notes: Nylon 66 films exhibiting form I melting behavior show the γ mechanical relaxation at -140°C. Samples which have form II melting behavior do not show this relaxation. The γ relaxation disappears when material having form I behavior is converted to material having form II behavior by annealing or by cold drawing. The form I and form II types of melting behavior are also found in poly(ethylene terephthalate); the interconversions and thermal behavior of the forms are analogous to the nylon 66 case. In poly(ethylene terephthalate), the β relaxation at -40 to -60°C is present only when form I melting behavior is found. Conversion to form II melting behavior by annealing or drawing (80°C) again causes the relaxation to disappear. No β relaxation was found in amorphous polymer. The γ dispersion in nylon 66 and the β dispersion in poly(ethylene terephthalate) can therefore be associated with the crystalline structure responsible for form I melting behavior. Form I melting behavior has been associated with foldedchain crystals based on previous work. It is therefore postulated that the γ dispersion in nylon 66 and the β dispersion in poly(ethylene terephthalate) are associated with motions in the chain folds. This assignment is not inconsistent with the change in the γ dispersion of nylon 66 with the number of backbone CH2 units, since these will affect the fold structure.

    Notes: The phenomenon of double melting, as manifested by two characteristic endotherms in the melting region on a differential thermal analysis (DTA) scan, has been studied in nylon 66 and polystyrene as a function of sample treatment by annealing or drawing. A variety of techniques were used in these studies including DTA, x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and mechanical testing. It is shown that the two endotherms are not caused by a bimodal crystal size distribution, by recrystallization, by orientation changes, or by phase changes. It is proposed that one endotherm is caused by the melting of foldedchain crystals, while the other is due to the melting of less perfect bundle crystals. This view is well supported by the results, especially by the DTA measurements made at different heating rates. Published data on the thermal behavior of annealed and drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate) and on polyethylene crystallized at various pressures may also be explained on this basis if it is allowed that in polyethylene the chains may be more extended.

    Notes: The mobility of polymer chain segments is shown to play a major role in the diffusion of dyes in nylon 66. The rate of dye diffusion has been related to the time-dependent mechanical properties, such as creep and stress relaxation, which are controlled by the mobility of the chain segments. The theoretical relations derived by Fujita et al. relating the diffusion of small molecules in amorphous polymers to other properties are shown to be applicable for the dyeing of semicrystalline nylon. Data showing the effects of surface area, temperature, and the amount of dye absorbed at saturation on the dyeing rate are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Two series of copolymers containing imidazopyrrolone (pyrrone) and imide groups were prepared by solution polymerization. Thin films of the copolymers showed a general increase in the tangent modulus and a decrease in elongation with increasing pyrrone content. The copolymers were more resistant to degradation by strong acids and bases than the corresponding polyimides. The thermal stabilities of the copolymers in air improved with increasing imide content, while the thermal stabilities in a vacuum improved with increasing pyrrone content. These copolymers represent a way to combine the desirable properties of both classes of homopolymers.

    Notes: The variability in adhesive bond strength and extent of cure of room-temperature, amine-cured epoxy resins has limited their applications. This paper reports the observation of microscopic crystal formation at the interface of the resin with air, resulting in a variably lower resin curing rate, extent of cure, and up to ten times lower adhesive bond strength. These crystals were identified as an amine bicarbonate salt, resulting from the reaction of the amine at the surface of the curing mixture with air. The bicarbonate formation seems to be general for the types of hardeners used in room-temperature curing. The amine-bicarbonate compound can be decomposed back to the amine by heating above 80°C. Otherwise, exposure of room-temperature systems to air before bonding is undesirable.

    Notes: A study has been conducted to determine the effects of flow configuration and reaction conditions on the performance of composite reverse osmosis membranes prepared by plasma polymerization of allylamine over a porous polymer substrate. It was established that superior membranes were obtained by using a gas-flow configuration avoiding direct monomer flow over the substrate. High rejections of NaCl could be attained when the plasma-deposited film was sufficiently thick to bridge all of the pores in the substrate. It was observed that in addition to influencing the rate of polymerization, the conditions used to sustain the plasma also affected the reverse osmosis characteristics of the deposited film. The effects of these conditions and other preparation procedures are discussed. Attempts to use infrared spectroscopy and ESCA to identify the relationship between polymer structure and reverse osmosis performance were not successful. ESCA did prove useful, though, in confirming an earlier postulated hypothesis that degradation of reverse osmosis performance is associated with the hydrolysis of nitrogen-containing structures in the plasma-deposited film.

    Notes: Three high molecular weight polycaprolactones (M̄w = 35,000, 18,600, and 7,130) were utilized as the sole carbon source by five of six fungi tested by the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM) agar plate method. The fungi were Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, Chaetomium globosum, Pencillium funiculosum, and a Fusarium sp. Quantitative analysis of degradation was performed using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). GPC analysis demonstrated differences between the activities of organisms which appeared similar by the ASTM method, and showed that, while all molecular weight species within each polymer were hydrolyzed, in several cases low molecular weight end products were not assimilated. Depending on the organism, the dominant factor determining degradability was either polymer molecular weight or degree of crystallinity.
