    Description: San Diego Bay was reopened to commercial gill net fishingfor striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, in that portion of thebay south of the San Diego - Coronado bridge in 1977 via anexperimental gear permit issued by the Fish and GameCommission. In 1985, legislation was passed allowing up tofive permits each annual season to fish for striped mulletin south San Diego Bay. Annual landings ranged from 18,700to 46,800 pounds from 1980 through 1986. (17pp.)

    Description: Speckled scallops, Argopecten circularis (Sowerby, 1835), were sampled at Agua Hedionda Lagoon, Carlsbad, San Diego County from March 1984 to October 1986, to obtain basic life history data. Monthly samples of scallops were collected, measured, and released to obtain length frequency data for estimates of growth, life span, and spawning period. Subsamples of scallops were collected for determination of gonadal-somatic and adductor muscle-somatic indices.In 1984 large concentrations of speckled scallops were found on the sand-silt bottom of the lagoon, closely associated with eelgrass, Zostra marina. During the course of the study the numbers of scallops declined, until their virtual disappearance at the end of 1986. Monthly length frequency plots from 24,375 scallop measurements indicate that this is a rapidly growing species with a short life span. Gonadal- and adductor muscle-somatic indices from subsamples of 1,714 scallops indicate first spawning at age one and a relationship between temperature and spawning.Based on this study management recommendations are made for the speckled scallop.     Description: The results of a three year, quarterly survey of thesubtidal marine environment offshore from Palos VerdesPoint, Los Angeles County, California are recorded. Both a 100 m (328 ft) transect consisting of 21 stations at 5 m (16 ft) intervals established in 14 to 17 m (45 to 55 ft) and a series of five arc stations located at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 m (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ft) were surveyed. Significant results included the documentation of long term cycles in the large brown kelps, Egregia laevigata and Eisenia arborea. A herbivore cycle which followed this algal cycle was also tentatively identified. Document has 89 pages.

    Description: Regulation of circadian period in humans was thought to differ from that of other species, with the period of the activity rhythm reported to range from 13 to 65 hours (median 25.2 hours) and the period of the body temperature rhythm reported to average 25 hours in adulthood, and to shorten with age. However, those observations were based on studies of humans exposed to light levels sufficient to confound circadian period estimation. Precise estimation of the periods of the endogenous circadian rhythms of melatonin, core body temperature, and cortisol in healthy young and older individuals living in carefully controlled lighting conditions has now revealed that the intrinsic period of the human circadian pacemaker averages 24.18 hours in both age groups, with a tight distribution consistent with other species.     Description: The asymmetric localization of messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein determinants plays an important role in the establishment of complex body plans. In Drosophila oocytes, the anterior localization of bicoid mRNA and the posterior localization of oskar mRNA are key events in establishing the anterior-posterior axis. Although the mechanisms that drive bicoid and oskar localization have been elusive, oocyte microtubules are known to be essential. Here we report that the plus end-directed microtubule motor kinesin I is required for the posterior localization of oskar mRNA and an associated protein, Staufen, but not for the anterior-posterior localization of other asymmetric factors.     Description: In response to stimulation, B lymphocytes pursue a large number of distinct fates important for immune regulation. Whether each cell's fate is determined by external direction, internal stochastic processes, or directed asymmetric division is unknown. Measurement of times to isotype switch, to develop into a plasmablast, and to divide or to die for thousands of cells indicated that each fate is pursued autonomously and stochastically. As a consequence of competition between these processes, censorship of alternative outcomes predicts intricate correlations that are observed in the data. Stochastic competition can explain how the allocation of a proportion of B cells to each cell fate is achieved.
