Description: The AlpArray experiment and the deployment of Swath-D together with the dense permanent network in Italy allow for detailed imaging of the spatio-temporal imaging complexity of seismic wave-fields within the greater Alpine region. The distance of any point within the area to the nearest station is less than 30 km, resulting in an average inter-station distance of about 45 km. With a much denser deployment in a smaller region of the Alps (320 km in length and 140 km wide), the Swath-D network possesses an average inter-station distance of about 15 km. We show that seismogram sections with a spatial sampling of less than 5 km can be obtained using recordings of these regional arrays for just a single event. Multiply reflected body waves can be observed for up to 2 h after source time. In addition, we provide and describe animations of long-period seismic wave-fields using recordings of about 1300–1600 broadband stations for six representative earthquakes. These illustrate the considerable spatio-temporal variability of the wave-field’s properties at a high lateral resolution. Within denser station distributions like those provided by Swath-D, even shorter period body and surface wave features can be recovered. The decrease of the horizontal wavelength from P to S to surface waves, deviations from spherically symmetric wavefronts, and the capability to detect multi-orbit arrivals are demonstrated qualitatively by the presented wave-field animations, which are a valuable tool for educational, quality control, and research purposes. We note that the information content of the acquired datasets can only be adequately explored by application of appropriate quantitative methods accounting for the considerable complexity of the seismic wave-fields as revealed by the now available station configuration.

Description / Table of Contents: Studies on Oxide Catalysts. XLIV. Modification of the Catalytic Behavior of Modified ZSM-5 Zeolites by Thermal TreatmentThe catalytic activity, the shape selectivity, and the deactivation behavior of ZSM-5 in paraffin cracking reactions can be regulated by a thermal pretreatment. A minimum of the deactivation rate as a function of zeolite pretreatment time at 600°C found in the hexane cracking could be verified in the methanol conversion reaction to gasoline.

Description / Table of Contents: Studies on Oxide Catalysts. XXXVII. On the Influence of Preparation Conditions on the Properties of Silica-AluminaSilica-alumina samples of different composition were prepared by coprecipitation from aqueous solutions at pH = 6 and pH = 9, respectively. Structures and properties of the solids were characterized (i.r., DTA, X-ray, molybdato method, surface acidity, catalytic activity in the cracking reaction of cumene). Solid composition and pH value of the precipitation medium equally exhibit influence on the structure of the silica-alumina (kind of incorporation of the aluminium) and thereby on the acidic and catalytic properties of the solids. Silica-alumina of equal composition but precipitated at different pH values may widely differ in their properties including activity-composition dependency.

Description: Studies of seismic tomography have been highly successful at imaging the deep structure of subduction zones. In a study complementary to these tomographic studies, we use array seismology and reflected waves to image a stagnant slab in the mantle transition zone. Using P and S (SH) waves we find a steeply dipping reflector centred at ca . 400 km depth and ca . 550 km west of the present Mariana subduction zone (at 20N, 140E). The discovery of this anomaly in tomography and independently in array seismology (this paper) helps in understanding the evolution of the Mariana margin. The reflector/stagnant slab may be the remains of the hypothetical North New Guinea Plate, which was theorized to have subducted ca . 50 Ma.

Description: In this paper, an underground experiment at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL) is described. Main goal is optimizing geothermal heat exchange in crystalline rock mass at depth by multistage hydraulic fracturing with minimal impact on the environment, that is, seismic events. For this, three arrays with acoustic emission, microseismicity and electromagnetic sensors are installed mapping hydraulic fracture initiation and growth. Fractures are driven by three different water injection schemes (continuous, progressive and pulse pressurization). After a brief review of hydraulic fracture operations in crystalline rock mass at mine scale, the site geology and the stress conditions at Äspö HRL are described. Then, the continuous, single-flow rate and alternative, multiple-flow rate fracture breakdown tests in a horizontal borehole at depth level 410 m are described together with the monitoring networks and sensitivity. Monitoring results include the primary catalogue of acoustic emission hypocentres obtained from four hydraulic fractures with the in situ trigger and localizing network. The continuous versus alternative water injection schemes are discussed in terms of the fracture breakdown pressure, the fracture pattern from impression packer result and the monitoring at the arrays. An example of multistage hydraulic fracturing with several phases of opening and closing of fracture walls is evaluated using data from acoustic emissions, seismic broad-band recordings and electromagnetic signal response. Based on our limited amount of in situ tests (six) and evaluation of three tests in Ävrö granodiorite, in the multiple-flow rate test with progressively increasing target pressure, the acoustic emission activity starts at a later stage in the fracturing process compared to the conventional fracturing case with continuous water injection. In tendency, also the total number and magnitude of acoustic events are found to be smaller in the progressive treatment with frequent phases of depressurization.

Description: Specular reflection of positronium, Ps was observed and that there is adequate intensity at higher energies to make further study worthwhile was established. The scattering appears to be restricted to the outermost surface with a mean free path of (0.75 + or - 0.15)A for Ps in LiF(100). With a greater intensity Ps beam one should see higher order diffraction beams as the result of the periodicity of the surface. Ps diffraction thus offers the possibility of being a novel and valuable probe to study the outermost surface and to study adsorbants on it. Two methods for producing Ps beams are described.

Description: Guided ion-beam mass spectrometry is used to examined the reactions of vibrationally cold ground-state O2(+)(X 2Pi sub g) with H2, D2, and HD. The energy dependence of the absolute integral cross sections from thermal energy to over 4 eV are measured in the center-of-mass frame of reference. Results are also presented for internally excited O2(+) ions reacting with D2 and HD. The results are consistent with the dominant state being the a 4Pi sub u electronic state. The experimental excitation functions are analyzed in detail and interpreted by extending the molecular orbital correlation arguments of Mahan (1971) and by comparison with results of statistical phase space theory and with a theory that predicts a tight transition state.
