Notes: Abstract Control design of nonlinear discrete-time uncertain systems with (possibly fast) uncertain parameters is considered. We study the effect of only partially compensating the uncertainty. The optimal choice of a design parameter, which indicates the amount of compensation, is recommended.

Notes: Abstract In a recent paper [1], Lee and Leitmann considered a two-compartment drug administration model with bounded uncertainty appearing in the system parameters and with the so-called “matching conditions” not satisfied. They employed the control proposed by Barmish and Leitmann [10] to bring the drug concentration level of compartment R from any initial value to the desired, predetermined level and then to maintain it in a calculable neighborhood of that level thereafter until the end of the specified period. In this article, we propose a robust, stabilizing control for the same model and for the same purpose without having to satisfy the so-called mismatch threshold conditon of Barmish and Leitmann [10].

Notes: Abstract Robust control which is designed via the Lyapunov approach has been shown to be effective for nonlinear uncertain systems. The performance of the controlled systems is studied by the Lyapunov argument. We propose to use the comparison principle which is based on the differential inequality to further explore the performance of controlled uncertain systems.

Notes: Abstract Robust control designs for a discrete Takagi and Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model are proposed. The T-S fuzzy model contains (possibly fast) time-varying uncertainty. First, a switching-type robust control is shown to stabilize the T-S fuzzy model asymptotically. Second, a saturation-type robust control is shown to render the T-S model practically stable. In both designs, only the bound of uncertainty is needed. The effectiveness of proposed designs is analyzed rigorously and illustrated by simulations.

Notes: Abstract The problem of automated steering and independent braking control for a tractor-semitrailer vehicle system is addressed. The control is designed by combining the input/output linearization and Lyapunov minimax approach. The proposed design achieves, despite of the presence uncertainty, lane following and prevents the jack-knifing phenomenon of trailer yaw motion.

Notes: Abstract Segmentation is a crucial step towards the interpretation of discrete three-dimensional measurement data. This paper presents a robust method for compound free-form surface segmentation and reconstruction. In the proposed method, a cloud of measurement data are collected through a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The set of measurement data is then sliced along, at most, three orthogonal directions. On each slicing plane, measurement data is fitted by a 2D NURBS spline. Now, maximum curvature points on each NURBS spline can be calculated. These points represent the boundary of the digitised object. With the proposed method, three-dimensional segmentation is simplified to a two-dimensional problem. The effectiveness of the proposed segmentation method will be illustrated with examples of a hair drier and a telephone receiver.

Notes: Reverse engineering is a methodology for constructing com-puter- aided design (CAD) models of physical parts by digitising an existing part, creating a computer model and then using it to manufacture the component. When a digitised part is to be manufactured by means of rapid prototyping machines such as stereolithography apparatus (SLA) and selective laser sintering equipment (SLS), etc., it is not necessary to construct the CAD model of a digitised part. This can be achieved by the proposed novel method which can construct an STL file (the de facto file format for rapid prototyping machines) directly from digitised part data. Furthermore, the STL file can be constructed with a significant data reduction at the users’ discretion.

Notes: Rapid prototyping plays an important role in product development. There are two ways to realise rapid prototyping: one is to develop new prototyping equipment such as stereolithography apparatus (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), etc., and the other is to improve existing CNC techniques. In this work, a robot system for rapid prototyping, which is an enhancement of the CNC based method, is presented. A robot arm holding a milling tool is used to machine the prototype of a solid model drawn using a commercial CAD system. In a previous paper, Part 1, a strategy using the robot for rough machining was discussed and then an automatic tool-path generation method using a grid height array was presented. As a verification of the proposed algorithm, a number of prototypes were produced, which demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of the algorithm. In this paper, Part 2, an approach to represent C-space by incorporating possible variations in tooling orientations is proposed. In order to reduce the error on complex surfaces resulting from undercut or overcut operations, a curvature-matching algorithm is also developed. Finally, experimental work using collsion-free planning for manipulator movement and stimulation for the curvature matching algorithm is carried out.

Notes: Abstract The effects of the lectin concanavalin A (Con A), on the kinetics of desensitization of the responses of voltage clampedAchatina fulica LP5 neuron to microperfused acetylcholine (ACh) and GABA were compared. Both ACh and GABA elicited increases in chloride conductance which decayed biphasically during prolonged applications of these agonists; an initial rapid decay was followed by a later slow decay. Con A (5 μg/ml) accelerated both the fast and the slow decays of responses to ACh. Con A (5 μg/ml) also accelerated the fast decay of responses to GABA, but the slow decay was unaffected, even by 20 μg/ml or more of the lectin. It is suggested that, at least in the case of GABA receptor, the fast and slow decays involve distinct desensitization kinetics. The effects of Con A on the desensitization of the ACh and GABA responses were reversed byd-mannose, a competitive and specific inhibitor of Con A binding to membrane sugar residues. These results provide further evidence that receptor desensitization can be influenced by perturbing the sugar moieties associated with the subunits comprising these signalling macromolecules. The carbohydrate residues may play an important role in regulating desensitization of transmitter receptors.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that an indirect synthesis method can be used in the efficient optimal design of multidegree-of-freedon, multidesignelement, nonlinear, transient systems. The technique begins with a limiting performance analysis which requires linear programming for a kinematically linear system, following which the system is selected using system identification methods such that the designed system responds as closely as possible to the limiting performance. The efficiency is a result of the method avoiding the repetitive systems analyses accompanying other numerical optimization methods.
