Beschreibung: Learning from successful applications of methods originating in statistical mechanics, com- plex systems science, or information theory in one scientific field (e.g., atmospheric physics or climatology) can provide important insights or conceptual ideas for other areas (e.g., space sciences) or even stimulate new research questions and approaches. For instance, quantification and attribution of dynamical complexity in output time series of nonlinear dynamical systems is a key challenge across scientific disciplines. Especially in the field of space physics, an early and accurate detection of characteristic dissimilarity between nor- mal and abnormal states (e.g., pre-storm activity vs. magnetic storms) has the potential to vastly improve space weather diagnosis and, consequently, the mitigation of space weather hazards. This review provides a systematic overview on existing nonlinear dynamical systems- based methodologies along with key results of their previous applications in a space physics context, which particularly illustrates how complementary modern complex systems ap- proaches have recently shaped our understanding of nonlinear magnetospheric variability. The rising number of corresponding studies demonstrates that the multiplicity of nonlin- ear time series analysis methods developed during the last decades offers great potentials for uncovering relevant yet complex processes interlinking different geospace subsystems, variables and spatiotemporal scales.

Notizen: This paper extends the results of Gary et al. [Phys. Fluids 27, 1852 (1984)]. That paper examined the linear theory of electromagnetic instabilities driven by an ion beam streaming along a magnetic field in a homogeneous Vlasov plasma, emphasizing the parametric dependence of the instability growth rates. This paper considers the parametric dependence of the real frequency at maximum growth of two such instabilities with right-hand polarization. It is shown that the right-hand resonant ion beam instability can have maximum growth at frequencies near the ion-cyclotron frequency if the beam–main component relative drift speed is about twice the Alfvén speed and at least one of the following conditions holds: the ion beta or the beam–main component relative temperature are sufficiently small, or the perpendicular-to-parallel beam temperature ratio is sufficiently large. These results support the identification of the right-hand resonant instability as the source of the large amplitude magnetic fluctuations observed upstream of slow shocks in the Earth's magnetotail.

Notizen: This article reviews some of the physical properties of geomagnetic storms and the solar and interplanetary causes of these sporadic events. To give the reader an overview of the whole system, the focus will be on the primary plasma processes. References will be provided for those who wish to obtain further information.

Notizen: Abstract This talk provides a brief summary of the first conference devoted entirely to magnetic storms. The conference was held in Pasadena, California, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 12-16 February 1996. Topics covered the relevant time-varying phenomena at the sun/corona, propagation of these structures through interplanetary space, the response of the magnetosphere from its interaction with these interplanetary structures, the formation of the storm- time ring-current (in particular the oxygen content of the ring-current), and storm ionospheric effects and ground based effects. A complementary summary is provided by Gonzalez et al. in EOS, 1996. The full set of review articles will be published in an AGU monograph and many of the contributed articles will appear in a special section of the Journal of Geophysical Research, Space Physics.

Notizen: [Auszug] SIR - Kurth's News and Views article1 captures much of the excitement of the phenomenon of solar coronal mass ejec-tions (CMEs) and their role in triggering terrestrial magnetic storms. But we wish to correct the impression that we do not yet know why some CMEs cause storms and others do not. The ...

Notizen: [Auszug] The plasma-wave probe (PWP) system carried by the Sakigake spacecraft used two detectors: a 10-m tip-to-tip dipole antenna and a search coil-type magnetic field detector. The receivers of the PWP system comprised a swept frequency receiver and a 16-channel frequency analyser, referred to as the ...

Notizen: Abstract Weakly nonlinear MHD stability of the Halley cometosheath determined by the balance between the outward ion-neutral drag force and the inward Lorentz force is investigated including the transverse plasma motion as observed in the flanks with the help of the method of multiple scales. The eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions are obtained for the linear problem and the time evolution of the amplitude is obtained using the solvability condition for the solution of the second order problem. The diamagnetic cavity boundary and the adjacent layer of about 100 km thickness is found unstable for the travelling waves of certain wave numbers. Halley ionopause has been observed to have strong ripples with a wavelength of several hundred kilometers. It is found that nonlinear effects have stabilizing effect.
