    Notes: Abstract The cytochrome b556-deficient mutant Escherichia coli K12 strain TK3D11 [7] could not grow with succinate as the sole carbon source, but could grow well on dl-lactate. This finding suggested that cytochrome b556 is primarily responsible for oxidative metabolism and utilization of succinate. 24 Amino acid residues at the amino-terminal of purified cytochrome b556 were determined. This sequence coincided completely with amino acid residues 4 to 27, predicted from the DNA sequence of the sdhC gene, one of the unassigned open reading frames of the sdh gene cluster recently reported by Wood et al. [16]. Based on these and other results, we concluded that cybA, the gene for cytochrome b556, is assignable as sdhC.

    Notes: Abstract An ASCA observation of the Jovian impact of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 is reported. Four impacts of H, L, Q1 and R were observed and four impacts of B, C, G, and Q2 were observed within 60 minutes after their impacts. No significant flaring of X-ray emission was observed. Upper limit X-ray fluxes of 90 % confidence level, averaged 5 minutes just after the impacts, were 2.4 × 10−13 erg sec−1 cm−2, 3.5 × 10−13 erg sec−1 cm−2, 1.6 × 10−13 erg sec−1 cm−2 and 2.9 × 10−13 erg sec−1 cm−2 for the impacts of H, L, Q1 and R, respectively, in the 0.5(0.7 for H and Q1)−10 keV energy range. However, a hint of X-ray enhancement around Jupiter from July 17 to July 19 was detected with about 2 ∼ 6 × 10−14 erg sec−1 cm−2 in the 0.5–10 keV energy range.

    Notes: Abstract Dynamic spectra of S-bursts of Jovian decametric radiations are obtained by using a high time resolution radio spectrograph which has a time resolutionof 2 msec and the bandwidth of 2 MHz.Within occurrence of 65 S-burst events observed in the period from 1983 to 1999, 26 events have been identified as the S-N burst events, which are characterized by the interaction between the S-burst emissions and the Narrow band emissions. In the dynamic spectra of the S-N burst, the trend of emissions with negative and slower frequency drift named as “Trailing Edge Emission” are often observed shortly after the appearance of the S-burst.Detailed analyses of these phenomena revealed that the Trailing Edge Emission is not a manifestation of S-burst with slower drift rate but a variation ofN-burst. The results suggested that S-burst and the associated Trailing Edge Emission are formed simultaneously started from a common region with different drift rates. It has been further suggested that the appearance of the S-burstsis not controlled by the geometrical effect between the source region and theobserver, but directly reflects the generation of the source region widelydistributed in an altitude range from a few thousands km to 30,000 km, alongthe Io flux tube.

    Notes: Summary The amounts of cytochrome b556 in the cytoplasmic membranes of several Escherichia coli K12 strains having F-prime factors and a lambda transducing phage were determined. The amount was amplified about two-fold in strains having F100-12 and F152, but not in strains having F100-11, F8 and λpsu + 2glnS +. The strain TK3D11, which lacks the kdp-gltA region (deletion D-01) of the E. coli chromosome, did not synthesize cytochrome b556 at all. From these results, the gene cybA encoding cytochrome b556 was located in the kdp-gltA region. In the cytochrome b556-deficient mutant, a novel b type cytochrome, cytochrome b561 which is a product of the gene cybB, was identified. It seems to function as a physiological electron transferring cytochrome in place of cytochrome b556 in this mutant.

    Notes: Abstract BALB/c athymic nude and thymus-reconstituted nude mice and neonatally thymectomized BALB/c mice were infected with stage 3 larvae ofAngiostrongylus cantonensis and the worm burdens of the mice were determined at various times after infection. When the nude and thymectomized mice were exposed to the parasite, some worms were found to migrate from the brain to lungs but died there without reaching maturity. This pulmonary arterial migration of the worms in the nude mice did not occur following thymic reconstitution. These data suggest that the inability of murine intracranial worms to migrate to the lungs is at least in part due to thymus-dependent mechanisms, and also that the failure of worm maturation in mouse lungs might be due to thymus-independent immune mechanisms and/or nonimmunological mechanisms.
