Notes: Abstract As reported previously, while a hydrodenitrogenation-selective FeMo sulfide catalyst maintained its activity in a 600 h accelerated aging test, the catalyst lost its hydrodenitrogenation activity fairly rapidly during the early stages of the test. This study is aimed at identifying the origin of the initial activity loss. Characterization of fresh and lined-out catalysts has indicated that the initial activity decline appears to be caused by decomposition of a single-phase amorphous FeMo sulfide.

Notes: Abstract Two waveguide CO2 lasers, a quartz waveguide and an alumina waveguide, have been studied on the 00°2–[10°l,02°1]I,II sequence bands. The use of an intra-cavity hot CO2 cell, which is a part of the waveguide, suppresses the regular-band transitions. The quartz waveguide laser has a total of 58 lines lasing on both the 9.4 µm and 10.4 µ,m sequence bands. The alumina waveguide laser has 36 lines lasing on the 10.4 µm sequence band and twice the output power of the quartz waveguide laser, whereas lasing on the 9.4 µm sequence band is difficult. The lasers can be operated on the selected single line without line jumping problem. The frequency tuning range of the strong lines is limited by the free spectral range of the cavity.

Notes: Abstract We study a Fermi gas with general translation-invariant many-body interactions on a (v≥3)-dimensional lattice. A complete analysis is given of the perturbative terms up to second order and the program put forward by N. M. Hugenholtz for the derivative of the Boltzmann equation is verified to second order.

Notes: Abstract Gibberellins are noted for their ability to induce expression of genes, such as α-amylase, in the aleurone layers of cereals. However, a number of mRNA species in the mature imbibed aleurone cell of barley, such as a storage globulin (Heck et al., Mol Gen Genet 239: 209–218 1993), are simultaneously and specifically repressed by gibberellin. In a continuing effort to understand this effect, we report cloning and characterization of two additional cDNAs from barley designated pHvGS-1 and pcHth3 that have high corresponding mRNA levels in the mature imbibed aleurone but are repressed 10-fold or more within 24 h of treatment with gibberellic acid (GA3). The extent of repression was concentration dependent and maximally effective at 10-6 M GA3. Repression was also noted in the constitutive gibberellin response mutant, slender, in the absence of exogenous GA3. The antagonistic phytohormone, abscisic acid, had no effect or was weakly inductive of the steady-state levels of these mRNAs. During development of the seed, repressible mRNAs are present to different degrees in the maturing aleurone layer and embryo, but not in the starchy endosperm. Some repressible mRNA persists in the mature dry aleurone layer, but is degraded during imbibition, replenished by de novo transcription, and maintained at high steady-state levels until GA3 is perceived. Preliminary investigation suggests that repression is at least partly due to destabilization of the mRNAs which have estimated half-lives of 12 h or greater in the absence of GA3. pcHth3 encodes a member of the γ-thionin gene family located on chromosome 7. pHvGS-1 corresponds to a gene on chromosome 3 of unknown function.

Notes: Abstract We describe new torsional oscillator experiments on 3 He confined in 98.2% open aerogel. In one, we monitored the superfluid fraction of pure 3 He at T 〈〈 T c while we gradually changed the sample pressure. The resulting change in density alters ξ 0 of the superfluid 3 He relative to the distribution of the length scales (correlations) of silica in the aerogel. We observed a T = 0 normal-to-super fluid transition at a pressure of about 6.5 bar, in marked contrast to the bulk where liquid 3 He is superfluid at all pressures. In the second experiment, we measured the temperature dependence of the 3 He ρ s at a pressure of 21.6 bar with different amounts of 4 He present in the cell. Adding 2-3% 4 He slightly increases both T c and ρ s . We found that for 4 He concentrations between 2% and 34%, the 3 He T c increases by a very small amount. However, ρ s , which for pure 3 He in aerogel at 0.5T c is no more than 11%, falls by another factor of 7. This behavior (constant T c , reduced ρ s ) is similar to that observed in granular superconducting films where the long-range order is controlled by phase coherence between adjacent grains.

Notes: Abstract We report identification of a 2189 by cDNA clone from barley corresponding to a single-copy gene, Beg1 (Barley embryo globulin), on chromosome 4, which encodes a storage globulin. In barley, the major protein reserve in the aleurone layer belongs to the 7S globulin class of proteins found in many seeds. Electrophoretically and antigenically similar proteins are present in the barley embryo. Accumulation of Beg1 mRNA was noted beginning 15–20 days post-anthesis in both the aleurone layer and embryo of the developing barley grain but not in the starchy endosperm. A high level of Beg1 mRNA is also present in the mature imbibed aleurones, which can be repressed by treatment with gibberellic acid. This repressive effect of gibberellin on the levels of Beg1 mRNA is confirmed in the gibberellin response-constitutive mutant, slender, whose aleurone layers do not accumulate Beg1 mRNA even in the absence of applied gibberellic acid. The deduced primary translation product of the Beg1 mRNA is a 637 amino acid (72 kDa) protein with homology to maize embryo globulin 1 (GLB1) and a partial sequence of a wheat 7S globulin. The internal amino acid sequence of BEG1 closely matches the N-terminal sequence of isolated barley aleurone globulin. Seven imperfect tandem repeats of 16 amino acids each are present near the N-terminus of BEG1, which conform to the consensus HGEGEREEEXGRGRGR, and contribute to the observed unusual amino acid composition of this protein. A second, distinct barley globulin gene, Beg2, which is homologous to maize Glb2, was detected by Northern and Southern analysis. Beg-2 and Beg1 are regulated differently which may indicate variation in storage or utilization properties among the barley globulins.

Notes: Summary The stability of fully developed plane Couette flow and pipe flow with viscous heating is studied at low Reynolds number for a Newtonian liquid with a temperature-dependent viscosity. The solution is obtained by a direct integration method of the eigenfunction equations, with eigenvalues located in the complex plane by means of the argument principle of complex variable theory. An instability will occur in plane Couette flow, but outside the parameter range which will be encountered in practice. There is no comparable instability in pipe flow. It can be concluded that a thermal mechanism does not cause the low Reynolds number instabilities observed in polymer processing operations.

Notes: Abstract The design and development of mm-wave fin-line and crossbar suspended stripline balanced mixer with GaAs beamlead diodes for Ka-Band downconverters is described. A conversion loss of 5.9±0.6 dB over the frequency band 32 to 36 GHz has been achieved in a crossbar stripline structure, and 6.5±0.7 dB over the frequency band 26.5 to 40 GHz in a fin-line with suspended stripline structure. Integrated circuit components, such as suspended stripline filters and transitions were also developed.

Notes: Abstract The phoretic association betweenMacrocheles muscaedomesticae and flies that inhabited poultry manure in a poultry farm in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, Malaysia was studied. The effects of temperature, relative humidity and fly abundance on phoretic rates also were in vestigated. The most abundant fly species found wasMusca domestica; Musca sorbens, Chrysomyia megacephala andOphyra chalcogaster were present in relatively large numbers. Representatives of ten families of mites were found on collectedMu. domestica. The most common mite wasMa. muscaedomesticae (Macrochelidae), found on all four species of flies mentioned above. The highest infestation (2.0%) occurred onO. chalcogaster butMu. domestica had the highest average number infested (5.7). The ventral part of the housefly's abdomen was the most common site of mite attachment. Usually only one mite was found attached per fly. The highest phoretic rate recorded was 64.4Ma. muscaedomesticae per 1000Mu. domestica. There was no correlation between phoretic rates andMa. muscaedomesticae abundance, nor was relative humidity a factor. However, a positive correlation was recorded in this host species between phoretic rates and temperature.

Notes: Abstract Photolithography to produce TiO2 patterns from amorphous films of (η5-C5H5)2Ti(N3)2 has been demonstrated. The efficiency of the reaction has been measured yielding a quantum yield of 0.025. The mechanism of the photoreactions of (η5-C5H5)2Ti(N3)2 has been studied using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy in both a low-temperature 1,2-epoxyethylbenzene glass and as surface films. In each case the primary photochemical process was found to be loss of a single azido group. The result of subsequent photolysis was found to be dependent upon medium and temperature. In the low-temperature glass no further photochemistry was observed. The exhaustive photolysis of films at 20 K, or room temperature, under a vacuum or in air led to loss of all ligands and the formation of TiO2.
