    Notes: Abstract Nuclear levels of23Mg near and above the proton threshold were investigated with high resolution. A new level has been identified at 7.643 MeV (66 keV above the proton threshold) with a possible Jπ=(3/2, 5/2)+. Some other spin-parity and excitation-energy assignments are also made. These results enable the reaction rate estimate of22Na(p,γ)23Mg with much smaller uncertainties, which is critical for the Ne-E problem in nuclear astrophysics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Aus dynamischen Gleichungen vom von Kármánschen Typus für die erzwungenen Schwingungen einer zylindrisch-orthotropischen Kreisplatte mit großen Amplituden und mit variabler elastischer Einspannung längs des Randes ausgehend wird eine einzelne Schwingungsform analysiert. Numerische Resultate für große statische Auslenkungen und für nichtlineare freie und erzwungene Schwingungen isotroper und zylindrisch-orthotroper Platten mit sinusoidaler Entspannung längs des Randes werden vorgelegt. Diese Resultate werden mit Werten aus der Literatur verglichen.
    Notes: Abstract Based on dynamic von Kármán-type equations a single-mode analysis is carried out for large-amplitude flexural forced vibration of a cylindrically orthotropic circular plate with its edge restrained nonuniformly and elastically against rotation. Numerical results are presented for static large deflection and nonlinear free and forced vibrations of isotropic and cylindrically orthotropic plates with sinusoidally restrained edges. Present values are compared with available data.

    Notes: Abstract Deficiency of adenosine deaminase (ADA–) results in autosomal recessive immunodeficiency disease of varying severity. Partial ADA– [ADA deficiency in erythrocytes (RBCs) but substantial ADA in non-RBCs] has also been identified, primarily by population screening of healthy adults in Africa and newborns in New York State. Normal immune function and/or minimal elevations of toxic metabolites in childhood suggested that partial ADA deficiency was benign and therefore that six mutations identified in partially ADA-deficient newborns and expressing 8–80% of normal ADA in non-RBCs were not pathogenic. However, the lowest activity mutation (Arg211Cys) has now been reported in patients with adult-onset immunodeficiency. We have now molecularly and biochemically studied two additional individuals whom we found to represent opposite ends of the spectrum of partial ADA deficiency as to biochemical abnormalities and age of ascertainment. Homozygosity for a newly identified Leu152Met mutation expressing considerably less activity than the pathogenic Arg211Cys mutation was found in a currently healthy 10-year-old Afghanistani child (ascertained at birth). He had the highest accumulation of the metabolite dATP among 13 partially ADA-deficient patients studied, but considerably lower than in those with immunodeficiency. Homozygosity for a newly identified Thr233Ile mutation expressing somewhat greater ADA activity than Arg211Cys was found in a healthy young adult Kung individual, associated with very low metabolite concentrations. Biochemical findings and a family history suggestive of immunodeficiency in prior offspring support the idea that the Leu152Met mutation could result in disease in homozygous individuals challenged by severe environmental insult or in heterozygosity with a null mutation. The pathogenicity of the Thr233Ile mutation, as well as a previously described Ala215Thr mutation with relatively lower activity is less likely but will only be determined by long-term observation of individuals carrying these mutations. Although, in contrast to other partial mutations, neither of these two mutations are at CpG hot spots, the frequency of CpG mutations remains high for partial mutations but is also similarly high in ADA– immunodeficient patients (5/8 vs 12/21).

    Notes: Abstract  Molecular markers were used to map and characterize quantitative trait loci (QTLs) determining cotton leaf morphology and other traits, in 180 F2 plants from an interspecific cross between a Gossypium hirsutum genotype carrying four morphological mutants, and a wild-type Gossypium barbadense. The prominent effects of a single region of chromosome 15, presumably the classical ”Okra-leaf” locus, were modified by QTLs on several other chromosomes affecting leaf size and shape. For most traits, each parent contained some alleles with positive effects and others with negative effects, suggesting a large potential for adapting leaf size and shape to the needs of particular production regimes. Twenty one QTLs/loci were found for the morphological traits at LOD≥3.0 and P≤0.001, among which 14 (63.6%) mapped to D-subgenome chromosomes. Forty one more possible QTLs/loci were suggested with 2.0≤LOD〈3.0 and 0.001〈P≤0.01. Among all of the 62 possible QTLs (found at LOD≥2.0 and P≤0.01) for the 14 morphological traits in this study, 38 (61.3%) mapped to D-subgenome chromosomes. This reinforces the findings of several other studies in suggesting that the D-subgenome of tetraploid cotton has been subject to a relatively greater rate of evolution than the A-subgenome, subsequent to polyploid formation.

    Notes: Abstract  The streak disease has a major effect on maize in sub-Saharan Africa. Various genetic factors for resistance to the virus have been identified and mapped in several populations; these factors derive from different sources of resistance. We have focused on the Réunion island source and have recently identified several factors in the D211 line. A second very resistant line, CIRAD390, was crossed to the same susceptible parent, B73. The linkage map comprised 124 RFLP markers, of which 79 were common with the D211×B73 map. A row-column design was used to evaluate the resistance to maize streak virus (MSV) of 191 F2:3 families under artificial infestation at two locations: Harare (Zimbabwe) and in Réunion island. Weekly ratings of resistance were taken and disease incidence and severity calculated. QTL analyses were conducted for each scoring date and for the integration over time of the disease scores, of incidence, and of severity. Heritability estimates (71–98%) were as high as for the D211×B73 population. Eight QTLs were detected on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5 (two QTLs), 6, 8, and 10. The chr1-QTL explained the highest proportion of phenotypic variation, about 45%. The QTLs on chromosomes 1, 2, and 10 were located in the same chromosomal bin as QTLs for MSV resistance in the D211×B73 population. In a simultaneous fit, QTLs explained together 43–67% of the phenotypic variation. The QTLs on chromosomes 3, 5, and 6 appeared to be specific for one or the other component of the resistance. For the chr3-QTL, resistance was contributed by the susceptible parent. There were significant QTL × environment interactions for some of the variables studied, but QTLs were stable in the two environments. They also appeared to be stable over time. Global gene action ranged from partial dominance to overdominance, except for disease severity. Some additional putative QTLs were also detected. The major QTL on chromosome 1 seemed to be common to the other sources of resistance, namely Tzi4, a tolerant line from IITA, and CML202 from CIMMYT. However, the distribution of the other QTLs within the genome revealed differences in Réunion germplasm and across these other resistance sources. This diversity is of great importance when considering the durability of the resistance.

    Notes: Abstract  An understanding of the genetic and environmental basis of genotype×environment interaction (GEI) is of fundamental importance in plant breeding. In mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs), suitable genetic populations are grown in different environments causing QTLs×environment interaction (QEI). The main objective of the present study is to show how Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression and Factorial Regression (FR) models using genetic markers and environmental covariables can be used for studying QEI related to GEI. Biomass data were analyzed from a multi-environment trial consisting of 161 lines from a F3:4 maize segregating population originally created with the purpose of mapping QTLs loci and investigating adaptation differences between highland and lowland tropical maize. PLS and FR methods detected 30 genetic markers (out of 86) that explained a sizeable proportion of the interaction of maize lines over four contrasting environments involving two low-altitude sites, one intermediate-altitude site, and one high-altitude site for biomass production. Based on a previous study, most of the 30 markers were associated with QTLs for biomass and exhibited significant QEI. It was found that marker loci in lines with positive GEI for the highland environments contained more highland alleles, whereas marker loci in lines with positive GEI for intermediate and lowland environments contained more lowland alleles. In addition, PLS and FR models identified maximum temperature as the most-important environmental covariable for GEI. Using a stepwise variable selection procedure, a FR model was constructed for GEI and QEI that exclusively included cross products between genetic markers and environmental covariables. Higher maximum temperature in low- and intermediate-altitude sites affected the expression of some QTLs, while minimum temperature affected the expression of other QTLs.
