    Notes: Abstract —A comparison of isoplanatic angles θ 0 derived from (1) balloon-borne in situ measurements of the index of refraction structure constant (C n 2) profiles and (2) ground-based optical measurements of stellar intensity fluctuations using an isoplanometer is presented. Concurrent data taken over a six-day period in the spring of 1986 show reasonably good agreement between the mean values determined by the two methods. Comparisons in light of meteorological conditions suggest an isoplanatic angle behavior consistent with the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability where the best correlation was found between the optically-measured isoplanatic angle and the layer-averaged wind shear. Differences between the two measurement methods are largest for isoplanometer azimuth angles perpendicular to the balloon trajectory and for lower values of mean shear.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the role of sea ice cover on penguin populations we used principal component analysis to compare population variables of Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae) and chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarctica) penguins breeding on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands with local (from direct observations) and regional (from remote sensing data) sea ice variables. Throughout the study period, the Adélie penguin population size remained stable, whereas that of chinstrap penguins decreased slightly. For neither species were there significant relationships between population size and breeding success, except for an apparent inverse density-dependent relationship between the number of Adélie breeding pairs and the number of eggs hatching. For both species, no general relationship was found between either population size or breeding success and the local sea ice conditions. However, the regional sea ice extent at a particular time prior to the start of the breeding season was related to the number of birds that arrived to breed. For both species, this period occurred before the sea ice reached its maximum extent and was slightly earlier for Adélie than for chinstrap penguins. These results suggest that sea ice conditions outside the breeding season may play an important role in penguin population processes.

    Notes: Abstract Geochemical and biological estimates of in situ microbial activities were compared from the aerobic and microaerophilic sediments of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Radioisotope time-course experiments suggested oxidation rates greater than millimolar quantities per year for acetate and glucose. Geochemical analyses assessing oxygen consumption, soluble organic carbon utilization, sulfate reduction, and carbon dioxide production suggested organic oxidation rates of nano- to micromolar quantities per year. Radiotracer timecourse experiments appeared to overestimate rates of organic carbon oxidation, sulfate reduction, and biomass production by a factor of 103–106 greater than estimates calculated from groundwater analyses. Based on the geochemical evidence, in situ microbial metabolism was estimated to be in the nano- to micromolar range per year, and the average doubling time for the microbial community was estimated to be centuries.

    Notes: Abstract Common murres (Uria aalge) are highly colonial; pairs often breed at the highest possible densities, in bodily contact with neighbors. At Bluff, a colony in western Alaska, we tested for synchrony in egg laying at various spatial scales and found little evidence for higher synchrony, either within study plots of 15–195 pairs, or within subplots containing several pairs, than among plots in a 5-year study. Egg laying of neighbors generally was more synchronous than expected based on overall frequency distributions in laying dates, however. Breeding success was positively correlated with the number of breeding neighbors and the number of neighbors tending eggs or nestlings at the time of egg laying. Breeding success of pairs with neighbors was positively related to the breeding success of neighbors. Pairs that produced eggs synchronously with at least one neighboring pair had higher success than those that began breeding either before or after their neighbors. Most reproductive failures at Bluff are due to accidental egg loss and predation on eggs by common ravens, Corvus corax, soon after laying. By occupying space where a raven might otherwise land and defending their own eggs, active breeding neighbors locally reduce the probability of egg predation. Active breeding neighbors also are less likely to flush and accidentally dislodge nearby eggs when disturbed than are nonbreeders. Murres breeding synchronously with neighbors have the highest assurance of the presence of active breeding neighbors both at the time of egg laying and throughout their reproductive attempts. Groups of neighboring murres can be considered small “selfish herds,” demonstrating by-product mutualism through their continued presence and defense of their own eggs and nestlings. Despite the advantages of breeding synchronously with neighbors, early breeding may often be favored, however.

    Notes: The Southern Ocean provides a habitat for microplankton which is strongly influenced by physical factors. Of these, one of the most important and striking is the formation of sea ice. Organisms in the ice form a unique community with specific properties and adaptations. Material and organisms are exchanged between the water column and the ice during the annual cycle, and ice is an important factor in modifying biogeochemical processes and exchange between ocean and atmosphere. The coupled system, in which a range of organisms alternate between a fluid and a solid medium, provides an interesting exercise in community ecology, and has implications for the assessment of biodiversity in understanding large-scale change.

    Notes: Rhabdomyosarcomas were induced in mice by intramuscular injections of crystalline nickel sulfide and 3-methylcholanthrene. At early passage, karyotypes were performed by G-banding for four nickel sulfide cell lines and for three 3-methylcholanthrene cell lines. Six cell lines were near-diploid and one nickel sulfide line was near-tetraploid. Three of the nickel sulfide cell lines were characterized by a rearranged marker chromosome which was present in a majority of the cells of each line. The rearrangements leading to the formation of marker chromosomes were different in each nickel sulfide cell line but involved chromosome 4 in two of the nickel sulfide cell lines. Extra copies of chromosome 15 were present in two nickel sulfide cell lines. Possible rearrangement and/or gene activation was examined for the c-mos oncogene on chromosome 4 and the c-myc oncogene on chromosome 15, but no alteration or activation was observed. None of the 3-methylcholanthrene cell lines contained rearranged marker chromosomes; however, one MCA cell line did contain large numbers of double minutes. In all cell lines, minichromosomes (small atypical acrocentric chromosomes) were observed that contained distinct centromeric regions but no other G-positive bands.

    Notes: Summary A bacterial gene encoding hygromycin phosphotransferase has been modified for expression in tobacco cells. The aphIV gene from Escherichia coli was inserted between the 5′ sequence of an octopine synthase gene and the 3′ sequence from a nopaline synthase gene. The new gene was incorporated between T-DNA border fragments in the broad-host-range vector pKT210 to form a micro-Ti plasmid. Agrobacterium tumefaciens containing this plasmid and a Ti plasmid as helper was used to incite crown gall tumors on aseptic tobacco plants. Samples of these galls could grow in the presence of hygromycin B, provided that the aph gene had been fused with the ocs gene to maintain the sense of the coding sequences. When the genes had been fused in the reverse ‘antisense’ orientation none of the gall samples could grow on hygromycin. Unlike wild-type galls the hygromycin-resistant tissue contained DNA sequences homologous to the aphIV gene. Thus the modified gene can be introduced into tobacco cells and confer on them the ability to grow in the presence of hygromycin B.
