Description: In order to recognize the distribution of hydrothermal tracers south of the Azores, a series of cores has been sampled during the GEOFAR cruise. The distribution of the Mn concentrations shows that the hydrothermal influence is maximum within and to the north-west of the Lucky Strike segment. North of the East-Azores Fracture Zone the sediments are enriched in Ba which could be derived from different sources. The chemical composition of the interstitial water shows that water advection is limited. Mn, Cu, Ni fluxes evaluated in one site have increased during isotopic stages 4 and 2 and the deglaciation.

Description: Because of its position between the North Atlantic and the Arctic oceans, its young age, small size, and diversity of geological structures, the Norwegian-Greenland Sea provided a unique target for deep drilling on Leg 38 of the Glomar Challenger. From studies of the sediments and basement rocks it was expected to gain insight particularly as to the following: 1) The tectonic framework and evolution of this area with special emphasis on the continental margins and on questions concerned with shifts of spreading axis and existence of foundered continental areas. 2) The youngest times of existence of land bridges between Eurasia and North America and the effect these land bridges had on water circulation and paleoclimates. 3) The date of the initiation of glaciation and dates of glacial advances and retreats. 4) Description of the Tertiary marine microfauna and microflora of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, which are essentially unknown at present, and investigation of their similarity with microfauna and microflora from other areas.

Description: Unlike many cruises of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 48 was scientifically planned to drill a number of sites to systematically address the problems of passive margin evolution. Site 400 was drilled at the foot of the Meriadzek Escarpment of North Biscay in 4399 meters depth. The site was located in a half-graben forming part of a succession of tilted and rotated fault blocks near the continent/ocean boundary. Site 401 was situated on the planated edge of a tilted fault-block underlying the southern edge of the Meriadzek Terrace on the north Biscay margin. Site 402 was located on the upper slope of the northern continental margin of the Bay of Biscay. The main objectives were to establish the presence or absence of shallow water Upper Cretaceous beds, and to penetrate pre-Aptian synrift sediments and the upslope equivalent of the deep water Albian-Aptian carbonaceous mudstones penetrated at Hole 400A.

Notes: Abstract The effect of pH on the nucleation stages of nickel electrodeposition on vitreous carbon has been analysed using low nickel concentrations, without additives. The experimental results indicated that there was a change in the electrochemical response of the system at 4 〈 pH 〈 4.5. A predischarge adsorption ascribed to nickel(II) species was observed with a different surface coverage depending on the pH. Moreover, different inhibition and 3D nucleation processes were detected in varying experimental conditions.

Notes: Abstract Zinc-nickel alloys have been electrodeposited from a simple bath containing only zinc, nickel and ammonium chlorides. The composition, morphology, structure and corrosion resistance of the alloys obtained with this bath have been studied and the influence of some additives, normally used to reduce the stress of the deposits, has also been analysed. Among these additives it has been found that the aromatic sulfonimide does not significantly modify the deposit characteristics but improves the corrosion resistance of the alloys. Moreover, the applicability of two statistical methods to a deposition process has been tested, to obtain the main factor determining the deposit composition.

Notes: Abstract The initial stages of the electrodeposition of nickel onto vitreous carbon from ethanol/water chloride solutions was studied in the presence and absence of some organic compounds. The influence of both additives and metal concentration was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, potential step experiments and differential capacity measurements. The role of the additives in the deposition process related to their adsorption, both on vitreous carbon and on vitreous carbon/nickel deposited electrodes, is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The electroplating of Zn−Ni alloy films from a chloride bath has been studied under different plating conditions, both in the absence and presence of a phenolic derivative. Under the conditions examined, the electrodeposition of the alloys belonged to the anomalous type. The morphology and composition of the deposits varied with current density, temperature, bath composition and additive concentration. The results show that the additive modifies the structure and surface topography of the deposits to a large extent and produces smoother deposits. The corrosion resistance of the alloys has been analyzed by means of salt-spray tests.

Notes: Abstract The electroplating of zinc-nickel alloys from a chloride bath containing two brighteners (a phenolic derivative and an unsaturated aromatic compound) and a levelling agent (an aromatic carboxylate) has been studied under different plating conditions. The composition and morphology of the alloys depended on the concentration of all the additives and also on the temperature. As a general effect, these additives smooth the deposit and refine the grain size. By means of scanning electron microscopy, it was possible to classify the deposit morphologies according to the type and concentration of the additives. The resistance of the alloys to corrosion was studied by means of a neutral salt-spray test.
