    Notes: Abstract We have compared the random-amplified-polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns of Symbiodinium isolates from seven species of giant clams to investigate the large genetic variation that we previously reported for this group of dinoflagellate symbionts using allozyme analysis. Comparisons of 163 RAPD characters by unweighted pair-group arithmetic-average cluster analysis (UPGMA) corroborate our previous findings that giant clams associate with a large number of genetically distinguishable algal symbionts, and that the isolates from a single Tridacna gigas individual form a group of closely related algae. However, the overall topology of the UPGMA tree constructed from RAPD data differs from that of the previous allozyme data, indicating that the combined data we have collected to date are insufficient to accurately infer phylogenetic affiliations between the isolates studied. Comparisons of our data set with those published for strains of Gymnodinium catenatum, a toxic dinoflagellate with a sexual life stage, shows that our isolates are even more diverse. Algal isolates from giant clams have a level of RAPD variation comparable to organisms that are able to undergo sexual recombination. This study demonstrates the sensitivity of the RAPD technique in detecting genetic diversity in this group of algae, and highlights the need for more comparative data for the major clades of Symbiodinium.

    Notes: Abstract The growth of both undisturbed colonies and transplants of the branching coral Acropora pulchra (Brook) was studied over a 17-month period in the reef of Bolinao, Pangasinan, northern Philippines. Growth rate was monitored using linear measurement techniques. Of the environmental factors measured, both temperature and day length, in the range of natural conditions encountered, correlated negatively with the growth and branching of the undisturbed corals and, to a lesser extent, growth of the transplants. Temperature, in addition, appeared to affect mortality of the transplants significantly. Using various methods of computation of data for the undisturbed colonies, the projected annual growth rate of the species was found to range from 13.1 to 15.8 cm yr-1. Growth rates of the transplants were in general considerably lower.

    Notes: In Spain, food distribution has been revolutionised over the past 15 years. Traditional food stores are in the process of slowly disappearing, while hypermarkets and supermarkets are increasing their presence, and more importantly, their market share. To understand better the causes behind this revolution, examines the existent literature on distribution trends, generally, in Spain. The Spanish distribution industry is marked by governmental deintermediation, consumers' orientation toward value and competitors' quest for efficiency through centralisation, as well as the development of new services and micro marketing actions, with the objective of increasing customer loyalty. Focuses on Spanish food product distribution, marked by the progressive drop in the number of traditional stores, the appearance of discounters specialising in the sale of own-brands and having aggressive prices, the notable growth of hypermarkets because of their diversified offering and near-cost prices, and the success of supermarkets, rooted in their ability to open multiple points of sale, positioning themselves between hypermarkets and discounters.

    Notes: The main objective of this paper is to obtain the duty-cycle probability forecast functions of cooling and heating aggregated residential loads. The method consists of three steps: first, the single loads are modelled using systems of stochastic differential equations based on perturbed physical models; second, intensive numerical simulation of the stochastic system solutions is performed, allowing several parameters to vary randomly; and third, smoothing techniques based on kernel estimates are applied to the results to derive non-parametric estimators, comparing several kernel functions. The use of these dynamical models also allows us to forecast the indoor temperature evolution under any performance conditions. Thus, the same smoothing techniques provide the indoor temperature probability forecast function for a load group. These techniques have been used with homogeneous and non-homogeneous device groups. Its main application is focused on assessing Direct Load Control programs, by means of comparing natural and forced duty-cycles of aggregated appliances, as well as knowing the modifications in customer comfort levels, which can be directly deduced from the probability profiles. Finally, simulation results which illustrate the model suitability for demand side - bidding - aggregators in new deregulated markets are presented.

    Notes: Abstract.— Two spawning and larval rearing trials with striped patao Eugerres brasilianus were conducted at Tunas de Zaza, Cuba, to develop a method for experimental-scale mass production of juvenile fish. Mature striped patao were captured from coastal lagoons in September 1988 and January 1989. Sexually mature females and males were induced to spawn by treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). After spawning, eggs were collected and placed in 1.2-m3 cylindroconical fiberglass incubators at densities of 150 and 200 eggs/L. About 1 h before hatching, eggs were transferred to 5–m3 concrete tanks. Larvae were fed a mixture of marine microalgae, rotifers, copepods, and Artemia nauplii; artificial food was supplied at 30 d post-hatch as a shrimp diet with 25% protein and 0.1–0.4 mm particles. Fourteen of 20 females spawned after 2 or 3 HCG injections (total dose = 6–10 IU/g body weight). Fecundity was 467–2,167 eggs/g body weight. Egg incubation time in seawater (38–39 ppt salinity) was 15–17 h at 29–30 C and 21–23 h at 25–26 C, with 98–100% hatching rate. The oil droplet and yolk sac were consumed by 3 to 5 d post-hatch and first food (rotifers) was eaten during second day. High larval mortalities began after the first month. Growth in 39- ppt seawater was faster (0.41 ± 0.01 md/d) at 29.1 ± 0.3 C than at 25.2 ± 0.2 C (0.27 ± 0.008 mm/d). Overall survival was 6–12.5% with tinal densities of 5–10 juveniles/L after 48–60 d. A total of 132,000 juveniles was harvested from the two rearing cycles.

    Notes: Alcohols, esters and fatty acids in wines from red, rose and carbonic maceration of Monastrell grapes were measured during yeast fermentation. Isolated volatile compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography alone and with-mass spectrometry. Increases in these compounds was most important during the first days of fermentation and concentrations varied between vinifications. The lower fermentation temperature and shorter skin contact time of rose vinification produced higher concentrations of esters and acids than in red wine. The intracellular fermentation in carbonic maceration vinification resulted in formation of almost all esters and fatty acids before alcoholic fermentation started. The final wine was closer to rose than red wine in aromatic composition.
