Notes: . Twenty of 35 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), eight of 12 red deer (Cervus elaphus), and nine of 21 fallow deer (Cervus da ma) but none of four moose (Alces alces) examined from April to November 1983 were infected with trypanosomes. Morphometric data of the bloodstream trypomastigotes from the three deer species differed significantly. This appears to be the first report of stercorarian trypanosomes from Cervidae in the Old World and the first description of representatives of the subgenus Megatrypanum in the three deer species.

Notes: The seasonal development of the testes in European pike was examined using wild fish and biopsies from pike housed in tanks. The size of the tubules and the different cell types were measured and their histological appearance described. Four stages of development can be distinguished during the annual cycle. They are: (I) the stage of rest from June to August; (II) the stage of development from September to November with intensive spermatogenesis; (III) the stage of maturity from December to March/April with spermatogenesis completed; and (IV) the post-spawning stage from March to May.

Notes: The effects of repeated weekly blood sampling on blood parameters were studied over a period of 22 days in a salmonid, Salmo gairdneri, and cyprinid fish, Leuciscus idus. The procedure induced mild anaemia demonstrated by decrease of red blood cell counts, haemoglobin and PCV. The changes were more marked in L. idus, which showed signs of increased red cell destruction. No significant trends could be observed in the white blood picture. The results show that blood tests are possible in individual fish, especially S. gairdneri over a long period.

Description / Table of Contents: Sliding and sliding abrasion tests of thermochemically treated steelsThe results of research work during several years are presented summarily. The results were obtained jointly by the Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (BAM), Berlin, and Stiftung Institut für Härterei-Technik (IHT), Bremen. The wear tests included hardened, casehardened, nitrided, nitrocarburized, chromized, chromvanadized and vanadized steels and were performed with dry friction in air and in vacuum, and with mixed lubrication. Under these conditions adhesion, abrasion and tribo-oxidation were the main wear mechanisms. The results reveal that the wear evaluation order of the differently heat treated steels depends on the type of wear and the operating wear mechanisms.

Notes: A highly sensitive and specific quantitative assay for metoprolol and two of its metabolites, containing an unchanged 2-hydroxy-4-isopropylaminopropoxy sidechain, has been developed. The compounds are isolated from the alkalized sample (plasma or urine) by extraction with dichloromethane, and converted to trifluoroacetyl derivatives by reaction with methyl-bis-(trifluoroacetamide). The reaction mixture is gas chromatographed on an OV-17 column and each substance is assayed by electron impact mass spectrometry using selected ion monitoring, and quantified by comparing the intensity of fragment ion m/z 266 with the intensities of corresponding fragment ions from the deuterated internal standards (m/z 270 and 271). It is possible to determine concentrations as low as 1 nmol I-1 (0.3 ng ml-1) in 1 ml of sample with a relative standard deviation of less than 10%.

Notes: A method has been developed for measuring concentrations of valproic acid and, with stable isotopes, labelled forms of VPA, in the plasma of patients undergoing maintenance therapy. One tetradeutero isomer of valproic acid - di-(2,3-dideuteropropyl) acetic acid - has been synthesized for administration to patients. A [2H14]valproic acid - diheptadeuteropropyl acetic acid - was synthesized as the internal standard. After isolation from body fluids the acids were methylated with diazomethane. The McLafferty fragments of the methyl esters were used for mass spectrometric quantification. It was demonstrated that the [2H4]valproic acid used behaves kinetically like the unlabelled drug in the human body. One dose of [2H4]valproic acid was given as a pulse dose to epileptic patients and the elimination profile was measured during continuous normal treatment. The half-life of valproic acid in patients under barbiturate or carbamazepine co-medication was reduced to at least half the value found after single dose administration to healthy volunteers.

Description / Table of Contents: Stereoselective Synthesis of Alcohols, I. Synthesis of One-Carbon Homologous Allyl Alcohols from Aldehydes or KetonesThe high yield conversion of aldehydes and ketones 2 to the one-carbon homologous allyl alcohols 3 is achieved by condensation to the vinyl sulfoxides 7, isomerisation to the allyl sulfoxides 9, and subsequent [2,3]sigmatropic rearrangement.

Description / Table of Contents: Stereoselective Synthesis of Alcohols, II. Stereochemistry of the [2,3]Sigmatropic Rearrangement of 3-Substituted 2-Alkenyl SulfoxidesRearrangement of the 3-E-substituted allyl sulfoxides 5 to the allyl alcohols 19 and 30 proceeds with low enantiomeric selectivity. In contrast, the 3-Z-substituted allyl sulfoxide 7b rearranged uniformly via the endo-transition state 26.
