Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to compare the conditions for the general error-optimality of linear systems developed by Kalman with the conditions for feasibility of linear models of neuromuscular and physiological control systems. Models of three actual physiological systems are tested for both the above criteria. Theoretical analysis presented here shows that there are no simple relationships between the two sets of conditions. Analysis carried out on the physiological systems models suggests the need for a general set of conditions for other optimality criteria, such as time and energy minimization, similar to Kalman's condition for error minimization.

Notes: Summary Ectopic eyes were produced on the fleshfly,Sarcophaga bullata by transplantation of imaginal eye discs. Electrophysiological and histological observations of these supernumerary eyes indicate the absence of synaptic connections between retinular cells and higher order neurons.

Notes: Summary Ontogeny of light response in the compound eyes of the fly,Sarcophaga bullata was investigated. Even though the eyes are structurally differentiated before eclosion they become electrophysiologically functional only after eclosion.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Improvements of tests for alcohols, chloral, salicylalcohol, salicine, sulfoxylate compounds and certain reducing organic compounds are described, which lead to microanalytical sensibility and sometimes also to enhanced selectivity.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Persuant to considerations and experiences derived from the chemistry of specific, selective and sensitive reactions, methods were developed for: 1. Detection of anthraquinone-sulfonic acids, based on the synthesis of polyhydroxyanthraquinones. 2. Detection of secondary alcohols, based on redox reactions with fused sulphur. 3. Detection of succinic acid and succinimide, based on the formation of pyrrole by distillation with zinc dust in the presence of ammonium chloride. 4. Detection of 1,2-diketones, based on the benzilic acid rearrangement. 5. Detection ofα-alanine (differentiation fromβ-alanine), based on the formation of acetaldehyde. 6. Detection of chloranil (differentiation from bromanil), based on the behavior toward pyrrole. 7. Detection of naphtalene, based of the formation of a colored addition compound with chloranil. All of the tests can be accomplished within the technique of spot test analysis, and microanalytical limits of detection are then attainable.

Notes: Abstract The 1.4–22.4 Å range of the soft X-ray spectrum includes a multitude of emission lines which are important for the diagnosis of plasmas in the 1.5–50 million degree temperature range. In particular, the hydrogen and helium-like ions of all abundant solar elements with Z 〉 7 have their primary transitions in this region and these are especially useful for solar flare and active region studies. The soft X-ray polychromator (XRP) is a high resolution experiment working in this spectral region. The XRP consists of two instruments with a common control, data handling and power system. The bent crystal spectrometer is designed for high time resolution studies in lines of Fe i-Fe xxvi and Ca xix. The flat crystal scanning spectrometer provides for 7 channel polychromatic mapping of flares and active regions in the resonance lines of O viii, Ne ix, Mg xi, Si xiii, S xv, Ca xix, and Fe xxv with 14″ spatial resolution. In its spectral scanning mode it covers essentially the entire 1.4–22.5 Å region. This paper summarizes the scientific objectives of the XRP experiment and describes the characteristics and capabilities of the two instruments. Sufficient technical information for experiment feasibility studies is included and the resources and procedures planned for the use of the XRP within the context of the Solar Maximum Mission is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the quantum size effect (QSE) in very thin Pd and Au films (0.5〈d〈10 [nm]) deposited on glass tips is studied by means of field emission at various anode potentials. The thickness-dependent field emission current characteristics show short periodic variations with a period of about 0.3 nm for both Pd and Au. The measured QSE oscillations and their amplitudes differ strongly from those expected qualitatively from model calculations for the smallest thicknesses. A model for the metal film based on a modification of the uniform background model is presented, and the thickness dependence of the conductance and the field emission current density are qualitatively discussed. Possible explanations of some discrepancies between calculations and the measured field emission current characteristics are proposed.

Notes: Abstract Two new recombinant haplotypes of the rat major histocompatibility system,RT1, have been detected in [LEW.1A (RT1 a ) ×LEW.1W (RT1 u )] × LEW 1N(RT1 n ) segregating hybrids. Recombinantr3 carries theRTL1. A region (determining classical transplantation antigens) and theRT1.B region (determining strong mixed lymphocyte reactivity and genetic control of antipolypeptide immune responsiveness) of the RT1a parent, bur rejects RT1a skin grafts. Recombinantr4 carries theA andB regions of the RT1u parent, but rejects RT1u skin grafts. The two histocompatibility genes detected are allelic to each other. The relevant locus, designated asH-C, maps to theB-region side of theRT1 system and appears to mark a thirdRT1 gene region,RT1.C. Availability of haplotypes r3 andr4 allowed the definition of a histocompatibility locus in theB region,H-B. The products ofH-C, H-B and of the previously describedH-A gene vary in antigenic strength.
