    Notes: The growth and reproduction complex contains recessive genes (grc) which influence body weight and gonadal development. Homozygous males are sterile, and they have an arrest of spermatogenesis at the primary spermatocyte stage. Homozygous females are fertile but have a reduced reproductive capacity. The data presented in this paper show that the latter defect is associated with a decrease in the relative number of secondary ovarian follicles and an increase in the number of atretic follicles. This finding indicates that most of the primary follicles do not mature properly. Thus, the genetic defect in gametogenesis controlled by the grc appears to occur at the same stage of development in both females and males.

    Notes: The contribution of cytochrome and alternative pathways to respiration during soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Chippewa 64] seed formation and maturation was measured by oxygen consumption of embryonic axis and cotyledon tissues and of mitochondria isolated from immature seeds. Respiration rates (dry weight basis) declined duing the last month of seed maturation. Cyanide sensitive respiration (cytochrome pathway) accounted for 80 to 90% of total oxygen consumption throughout seed formation and maturation. The proportion of the total respiration resistant to 1 mM cyanide and inhibited by 1 mM salicylhydroxamic acid (alternative pathway) did not exceed 6%. A residual oxygen consumption, accounting for 5 to 15% of total respiration, persisted in the presence of both inhibitors. Likewise, virtually no alternative respiration was found in mitochondria prepared from immature seeds. The alternative respiratory pathway seems absent during soybean seed formation and maturation regardless of whether grown in the greenhouse or field.

    Notes: Elektrophile Substituenten mit Carbonylgruppen erhöhen struktur- und stellungsabhängig das Redoxpotential von o-Benzochinonen so stark, daß sie aus entsprechend substituierten Brenzcatechinen mit Tetrachlor-o-chinon präparativ nicht mehr zugänglich sind (Tab. 1). Führt man in diese Verbindungen Methoxylgruppen ein, so werden die Redoxpotentiale so weit gesenkt, daß aus den Brenzcatechinen mit Tetrachlor-o-chinon die zugehörigen o-Chinone entstehen.  -  Im Blick auf das Lignin- und Melaninproblem wurden o-Chinone der Kaffeesäure und substituierter Kaffeesäuren untersucht (Tab. 3) und 4.5-Dihydroxy-1-methoxycarbonyl-inden (XX) dargestellt.  -  Ist die Carbonylgruppe oder C=C-Doppelbindung Bestandteil eines planar angegliederten Ringes (vgl. I und II bzw. XX), so liegt das Redoxpotential unter demjenigen des o-Benzochinons; die Art dieser elektronischen Wechselwirkungen ist noch unbekannt.

Bei der thermischen Zersetzung von Di-tert.-butylperoxid in einem Methanol-Äthanol-Gemisch bzw. Methanol-Äthylenglykol-Gemisch entstehen 1,2-Propylenglykol neben Äthylenglykol und 2,3-Butylenglykol bzw. Glycerin neben Äthylenglykol und Erythrit.

    Notes: Water mobility in an acid Nafion® membrane containing ca. 15% water by weight has been studied by high-resolution neutron quasielastic scattering (NQES). The data are analyzed in terms of simple models. On a scale of ca. 10 Å, the water molecules move practically as freely as in bulk water, but their long-range motion is much more hindered. These results are important for an understanding of the relation between the microstructure and the macroscopic properties of these membranes. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed NQES study of the water-polymer interaction problem.

    Description / Table of Contents: Photoelectron Spectroscopy on Niobium IodidesThe photoelectron spectra (AlKα, HeI) of NbI5, NbI4, Nb3I8, Nb6I11, HNb6I11, Nb6I8(CH3NH2)6, Nb6I8(C3H7NH2)6, and Nb are measured and discussed. It is shown that the binding energy of the niobium core levels depends linearly on the oxidation number n (n = I/Nb). The relation BE = 201.8 + 1.07 · n holds for the Nb 3d5/2 level. Using this relation the hydridic character of the hydrogen in HNb6I11 becomes plausible and the increased electron concentration of the Nb6I8 cluster in the compounds Nb6I8(CH3NH2)6 and Nb6I8(C3H7NH2)6 is verified. Energy gaps Eg = 0.40 (0.45) eV are found for Nb6I11(HNb6I11) and for the amines the top of the valence band is 0.70 (CH3NH2) and 0.68 eV (C3H7NH2), resp. below the Fermi level.
    Notes: Es werden die Photoelektronenspektren (AlKα, HeI) von NbI5, NbI4, Nb3I8, Nb6I11, HNb6I11, Nb6I8(CH3NH2)6, Nb6I8(C3H7NH2)6 und Nb gemessen und diskutiert. Es läßt sich zeigen, daß die Bindungsenergie BE der Niob-Rumpfniveaus linear von der Oxydationszahl n (n = I/Nb) abhängt; für das Nb 3d5/2-Niveau ergibt sich die Beziehung BE = 201,8 + 1,07 · n. Durch Anwendung dieser Beziehung wird der hydridartige Charakter des Wasserstoffs in HNb6I11 wahrscheinlich gemacht sowie die Zunahme der Elektronenkonzentration im Nb6I8-Cluster der Verbindungen Nb6I8(CH3NH2)6 und Nb6I8(C3H7NH2)6 belegt. Für Nb6I11(HNb6I11) ergibt sich eine verbotene Zone Eg = 0,40 (0,45) eV, für die Amine ist der Abstand der Oberkante des Valenzbandes zur Fermi-Kante 0,70 (CH3NH2) bzw. 0,68 eV (C3H7NH2).
