    Notes: The presence of microorganisms have been shown to increase by over 40% the mass transfer rates from small oxygen bubbles at low Reynolds number flow. This increase was found to be due only to the microbe cells as inert particles disrupting the quasi-static liquid surface film surrounding the gas bubble and thus decreasing the gas-liquid interfacial resistance. The observed increase in oxygen mass transfer rates was not dependent on cell viability, no effect was noted due to cell-liquid interfacial resistance, nor was the phenomenon due to altering the physical properties of the liquid during cell propagation. These results were obtained in a unique plexiglass apparatus designed for observing under a microscope a small (0.4 mm dia.) stationary oxygen bubble collapsing into a flowing fluid. The oxygen bubble was injected by a small hypodermic needle and the fluid was suspensions of the yeast Candida intermedia, the bacterium Pseudomonas ovalis, 0.3μ alumina, as well as base points of cell free broth and pure water. Several well-known chemical inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation were used to limit cell oxygen uptake. Calculations of oxygen mass transfer rates were compared with the semi-empirical model of Frössling, the circulating sphere model of Levich, and the rigid sphere concentration boundary layer model of Fried-lander, the latter two showing strong Reynolds number dependence that may be due to radial fluid motion.

    Notes: A procedure for measuring the rate of heat production from a fermentation has been developed. The method is based on measuring the rate of temperature rise of the fermentation broth resulting from metabolism, when the temperature controller is turned off. The heat accumulation measured in this manner is then corrected for heat losses and gains. A sensitive thermistor is used to follow the temperature rise with time. This procedure is shown to be as accurate as previous methods but much simpler in execution. Using this technique, the rate of heat production during metabolism was found to correlate with the rate of oxygen consumption. Experiments were performed using bacteria (E. coli and B. subtilis), a yeast (C. intermedia), and a mold (A. niger). The substrates investigated included glucose, molasses, and soy bean meal. The proportionality constant for the correlation is independent of the growth rate, slightly dependent on the substrate, and possibly dependent On the type of organism growth. This correlation has considerable potential for predicting heat evolution from the metabolism of microorganisms on simple or complex substrates and providing quantitative parameters necessary for heat removal calculations.

    Notes: The rationale behind KISR's involvement in SCP is explained and emphasis towards the use of aerobic thermophilic/thermotolerant methanol-utilizing bacterial cultures is stressed. An attempt is made to correlate different pilot plant harvesting procedures for biomass recovery with product quality. The latter is expressed as crude and true protein content, moisture and ash content, mineral composition of the ash, and amino acids profiles. The most suitable harvesting procedures were found to be those using a mild heat-acid or acid-heat treatment. Both of these procedures gave high recovery efficiencies and suitable product nutrition.

    Notes: The maturation of the germ cells of the two hermaphroditic species, Curtisia foremanii (Girard) and Bdelloura candida (Girard) has supplied the material for this chromosome study.Both species of flatworms are believed by the author to possess a diploid number of twelve chromosomes and a haploid number of six, although Curtisia foremanii has previously been reported as having a smaller and variable number of chromosomes.A tendency of the chromatids comprising individual chromosomes to separate from one another at certain times was noted in both species. This action results in giving the appearance of a larger number of chromosomes than the germ cells actually possess. A further source of apparent increase in chromosome number in the Curtisia oocytes, after treatment with the usual Allen's B3 and B15 and Heidenhain's iron haematoxylin, is the presence of some deeply staining, non-chromatin material.No significant differences in number, form and behavior of chromosomes of male and female complexes were noted, with the possible exception of the tendency of the chromatids to separate from one another, to be greater in the female than in male germ cells.

    Notes: The complete regeneration of a new oral-disc and tentacles has been observed and described for Aiptasia diaphana. These structures are regenerated quite rapidly: seven to ten days at 20°C. At three days post-amputation, the new primary, secondary, and tertiary tentacle buds begin to develop in direct association with the underlying primary, secondary, and tertiary septae (respectively) of the column, suggesting that the latter organize the form of the regenerating oral-disc. Two days after amputation, the zooxanthellae of the presumptive oral disc arrange themselves into a ring which quite precisely delimits the area from which the tentacle buds will form. In spite of its suggestive proximity, this accumulation of algae plays no role in the induction of tentacle buds as was shown by studying regeneration in anemones which essentially lacked large quantities of these symbiotic algae.Cuts perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the column result in an equal rate of tentacular regeneration around the entire circumference of the presumptive oral disc. Oblique amputations foster an asynchronous regeneration: the tentacle buds of the distal-most area of the severed column are larger and regenerate much sooner than those of the proximal region. Similar results were obtained by studying anemones which were cut perpendicular to their longitudinal axes at different levels along the column. The data suggest that an oral-aboral gradient exists concerning the time required for the initiation of tentacle budding and the rate of tentacle regeneration.

    Notes: Measurements have been made of those changes which lead to increases in the surface area of the intestine during the metamorphosis of three species of lampreys. Although the intestine of the Southern Hemisphere lamprey, Geotria australis, increases in length by 1.13 times and in diameter by 1.12 times, the main factor influencing the 5.71 times increase in surface area is the development of longitudinal folds. The contribution of the typhlosole to the internal perimeter of the intestine is less in most life cycle stages of G. australis than in Lampetra spp. The changes in the various intestinal measurements of the nonparasitic species L. planeri parallel those of the presumed ancestral parasitic species, L. fluviatilis, during the first six stages of metamorphosis. However, the longitudinal folds, but not the typhlosole, subsequently start regressing in L. planeri just after the time when the rate of gonadal development increases markedly. An account is also given of the pattern of fold formation and the development of the typhlosolar vein in G. australis.

    Notes: In early embryonic stages of Passalus there are, in addition to the brain and suboesophageal ganglion, three thoracic and ten abdominal ganglia; one ganglion to each body segment. Before hatching the tenth, ninth and eighth abdominal ganglia coalesce. During the three larval instars the terminal ganglion remains in the sixth abdominal segment and only minor changes occur. By the end of the third day of pupal life the adult form of the nervous system is practically assumed. All abdominal ganglia are fused into a single, solid, elongated ganglionic mass. Connectives have disappeared between meso- and meta-thoracic and between metathoracic and abdominal ganglia; and with exception of the brain, sub-oesophageal and prothoracic ganglia, the entire ventral chain has come to lie in the mesothorax. The peripheral nerves still arise from the ganglia and ganglionic mass in their same relative positions and still supply the same segments in which they were originally located.

    Notes: Scanning electron microscopy of microcorrosion casts was used to visualize circulatory pathways of the intermediate circulation in nonsinusal spleen of cat. The marginal sinus (MS) around lymphatic nodules is a distinct vascular space which fills preferentially before the filling of the marginal zone (MZ) and surrounding red pulp occurs. The MS, which has a plentiful vascular supply, does not usually enclose the nodule completely. From the MS, flow occurs radially outwards into the MZ. Corrosion casts and histological sections both showed that a diversity of forms of the MZ exists: The thickness of MZ and the arrangement of its reticulum vary among nodules and between different areas of the same nodule, from a complete absence to a region of up to 50 μn width.No direct arteriovenous connections were found (in contrast to dog spleen: Schmidt et al., '83b). Aside from capillary endings in the MS and MZ, all arterial capillaries terminate in the reticular spaces of the red pulp, i.e., the circulation appears to be entirely “open.” From each capillary termination a great variety of flow pathways through the reticular meshwork to the pulp venules is available; some of these routes are quite long but others may involve distances as short as 15-25 μm. Evidence of flow into ellipsoid sheaths was abundant in casts from dilated spleens, but scarce in contracted spleens. In contrast to the extensive system of interconnected venous sinuses in dog spleen, the pulp venules found in cat spleen are nonanastomosing, shorter, and much smaller in caliber, and all receive flow freely from the reticular mesh-work via open ends and fenestrations in their walls.

    Notes: The masticatory pattern of Sphenodon punctatus, the sole remaining rhynchocephalian, now restricted to islands off the coast of New Zealand, has been analyzed by detailed anatomy, cinematography, cinefluoroscopy, and electromyography. Food reduction consists of a closing, crushing bite followed by a propalineal sliding of the dentary row between the maxillary and palatine ones. The large, fleshy tongue can be protruded to pick up small prey, and also plays a major role in prey manipulation. The rotational closing movement of the jaw, supporting the basic crushing movement, is induced by the main adductor musculature. It is followed by a propalineal anterior displacement relying heavily on the action of the M. pterygoideus. The fiber lengths of the several muscles reflect the extent of shortening. The most obvious modification appears in the M. pterygoideus, which contains a central slip of pinnately arranged short fibers that act a period different from that of the rest of the muscle; their action increases the power during the terminal portion of the propalineal phase. This also allows the animal to use its short teeth in an effective shearing bite that cuts fragments off large prey.The action of single cusped dentary teeth acting between the maxillary and palatine tooth rows provides a translational crushing-cutting action that may be an analog of the mammalian molar pattern. However, this strictly fore-aft slide does not incorporate capacity for later development of lateral movement.

    Notes: The fine structure of spermatogenesis is described for the marine calanoid copepod Labidocera aestiva. The mature spermatozoon is a slightly flattened, disc-shaped cell without a flagellum or an acrosome.Primary spermatocytes in first meiotic prophase are characterized by large nuclei showing progressive condensation of chromatin. The cytoplasm contains free ribosomes, numerous mitochondria, cytoplasmic vesicles, centrioles, and perinuclear nuage. Densely staining cisternae are associated with the nuage of pachytene and diplotene primary spermatocytes. This association may represent the temporary differentiation of an acrosome. Synaptonemal polycomplexes are frequently present in the nuclei of zygotene, pachytene, and diplotene primary spermatocytes. Many of the intercellular bridges which join the germ cells throughout spermatogenesis appear occluded by systems of transverse membranous cisternae. After the second meiotic telophase, spermatids are incorporated into nongerminal accessory cells that may facilitate the release of spermatids from the testis and regulate the rate of spermatogenesis by phagocytosis.During spermiogenesis the mitochondria become closely applied to the nuclear envelope, the nuclear envelope fragments and forms an elaborate membrane complex, a pentalaminar plasma membrane develops, and electron-dense material accumulates on the inner and outer surfaces of the plasma membrane in the mature spermatozoon.
