    Notes: Polyvinylpyrrolidone and dextran polysaccharides have been fractionated by ultrafiltration by using newly developed membranes with sharp molecular weight cutoffs. Three different experimental techniques were employed: (a) batch ultrafiltration by using progressively more retentive membranes; (b) continuous ultrafiltration by using several similar membranes in series; (c) variable pressure ultrafiltration by using a single membrane and varying the applied pressure. Ultrafiltration is shown to be a technique of preparative fraction having the advantages of simplicity, speed, and economy.

    Notes: An equilibrium osmometer for the measurement of very low osmotic pressures has been designed. It is constructed of metal and employs a large horizontal membrane. A rapid approach to equilibrium is obtained by the use of a fine capillary and a bacterial cellulose membrane (Masson and Melville) in conjunction with complete thermostatting. To avoid displacement, the membrane is stretched in a frame and held over a grooved domed support of the Carter-Record type. Details of procedure, including concentration estimation and the preparation of membranes, are given.Measurements of the osmotic pressure of a fractionated sample of polystyrene, of molecular weight approximately one million, have served to determine the precision of the osmometer. At a pressure of 0.026 cm. of chloroform, the standard deviation was found to be 0.002 cm. The importance of correcting for the density of the solution, when measuring high molecular weights, is discussed.

    Notes: A frequency-dependent stiffness μB was found from the action of high frequency shear waves on dilute solutions of polyisobutylene, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, hevea rubber, and polybutadiene microgel. A dynamic viscosity associated with streaming of solvent through the molecular coil, ηB, dropped far more rapidly with rising temperature than solvent viscosity, denoting that it, too, reflected configurational changes. (The μB for polyisobutylene in solution declined moderately with rising temperature, corresponding to an exponential coefficient of 2.3 kcal.) This behavior suggested three chief mechanisms for deformation of isolated chains: (1) viscoelastic configuration changes (W. Kuhn's “macroconstellation changes”) with contribution to rigidity per average molecule per cubic centimeter of solution of 〈 μ2 〉 or force constant 〈 f2 〉; (2) temporary entanglements of interpenetrating segments in the chain coil (like the interchain entanglements in concentrated solutions of J. D. Ferry), with contribution to rigidity 〈 μ3 〉; and (3) restrictions to rotational flexibility around chain linkages, with rigidity contribution 〈 μ4 〉. Arrangement of these processes in parallel with solvent viscosity yielded frequency-independent constants in agreement with the limited data so far obtained in the 103 to 108 cycle range.Such a model gave molecular mechanical constants correlating roughly with chemical structures. For polyisobutylene, force constants per average molecule were 〈 f2 〉 = 17.1 × 10-13 dyne cm., 〈 f3 〉 = 6.3 × 10-12 and 〈 f4 〉 = 1.6 × 10-10. Lower molecular weight (1.2 × 106 vs. 3.9 × 106) gave slightly lower values. 〈 f4 〉 represents restrictions to rotation per isobutylene residue in the chain of 2.3 × 10-15, or about 104 less than valence bond infrared vibrational or twisting force constants for hydrocarbons. The combined average chain rigidities expressed by the force constant 〈 fB 〉, at 20 kc. and 25°C. were, for polyisobutylene of M̄V ∼ 106, 1.8 × 10-12; hevea rubber of M̄V = 2.3 × 105, 1.5 × 10-15; polystyrene of M̄V = 2.3 × 105, 4.5 × 10-16. Hence, single polystyrene chains are quite flexible, but polybutadiene microgel has 〈 fB 〉 = 5.2 × 10-11, for M̄W ∼ 18 × 106, showing effect of internal cross-linking.“Poor” solvents (“solvent power” μ 〉 0) caused chain rigidity of polyisobutylene and polystyrene to decrease, compared to good solvents (“solvent power” μ ∼ 0), and viscosity decreased also. Apparent decrease in 〈 fB 〉 apparently means external (solvent) “compression” of chain, and agrees with technological efficiency of poorly compatible plasticizers.Complete theory of effects has been outlined by Kirkwood, for a rod model. Great range of rigidities shown even by hydrocarbon chains (intrinsic rigidity of polyethylene soln., [μ] = 906 dynes/cm.2, of polypropylene soln., [μ] = 92 dynes/cm.2) has not yet been treated, however.

    Notes: Using especially modified torque and capillary extrusion rheometers the rheological behaviour of a typical triple-base gun propellant has been examined as a function of such processing variables as temperature, solvent content, time taken to incorporate, filler content and filler shape. Propellant doughs flow according to the law \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \sigma -\sigma _0 = {\rm K}\dot \gamma ^{\rm n} $\end{document} where σ is the shear stress applied to the dough to maintain a shear rate of γ, σ0 is the yield stress at which flow commences, K is the consistency index and n is the flow behaviour index. Variations in these constants as a function of the above mentioned variables are presented and their implications discussed. Resultant changes in the physical properties of the dried extruded propellant also are monitored.

    Description: Geomorphic studies of impact structures in central Australia are being used to understand the complexities of fluvial dissection in the heavily cratered terrains of Mars. At Henbury, Northern Territory, approximately 12 small meteorite craters have interacted with a semiarid drainage system. The detailed mapping of the geologic and structural features at Henbury allowed this study to concentrate on degradational landforms. The breaching of crater rims by gullies was facilitated by the northward movement of sheetwash along an extensive pediment surface extending from the Bacon Range. South-facing crater rims have been preferentially breached because gullies on those sides were able to tap the largest amounts of runoff. At crater 6 a probable rim-gully system has captured the headward reaches of a pre-impact stream channel. The interactive history of impacts and drainage development is critical to understanding the relationships in the heavily cratered uplands of Mars. Whereas Henbury craters are younger than 4700 yrs. B.P., the Gosses Bluff structure formed about 130 million years ago. The bluff is essentially an etched central peak composed of resistant sandstone units. Fluvial erosion of this structure is also discussed.

    Description: While in the lobes of the distant magnetotail, ISEE-3 encountered regions of compressed magnetic field at a rate of several per day. The duration of these events was 5 to 20 minutes and they were observed 10 to 30 minutes following the onset of substorm activity near the earth. During each event, the lobe magnetic field tilted first northward and then southward with the inflection point near the time of peak field strength. Following the compression events, the lobe field weakened and retained a southward component for 20 to 40 minutes. It is suggested that these traveling compression regions are the lobe signatures of plasmoids moving rapidly down the tail in the plasma sheet. Comparison of ISEE-3 compression event times with substorm onset times yielded propagation speeds of 350 to 750 km/s.

    Description: Using plasma electron and magnetic field measurements from ISEE 3, 220 earth radii from earth, it is found that the magnetotail at that distance is a coherent structure that evidently waves about through distances comparable to its own lateral scale size. For about one-third of the time it was inside the magnetotail, ISEE 3 was in the plasma sheet. During quiet times the plasma sheet is apparently quite thin, but in response to geomagnetic activity it expands, becoming filled with hot plasma flowing tailward at speeds sometimes exceeding 1000 km/sec, and forces the magnetotail cross-section itself to expand. The plasma sheet's expansion is delayed typically by about 30 minutes from the onset of the associated geomagnetic activity (often a clearly identified isolated substorm). The magnetic field in the newly-expanded plasma sheet usually exhibits a few-minute steep northward excursion followed by a more prolonged (and often steep) southward excursion. These are believed to be the signatures of arrival of a plasmoid formed and released near the earth at the onset of the corresponding geomagnetic activity. The discreteness of these plasma releases through the magnetotail and their close association with onsets of geomagnetic activity at earth suggest that they are consequences of spontaneous release, probably by magnetic reconnection, of energy and plasma earlier stored in the magnetotail.
