Notes: A peak power of 1 TW has been obtained in XeCl with a pulse width of 310 fs and the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) less than 3% in energy. The property of ASE was analyzed for different gains. Based on this analysis, the ASE coupling between stages was suppressed by using an appropriate spatial filter along with operating at a low-gain level. The saturation characteristics of UV dyes were investigated and analyzed for subpicosecond pulses. BBQ [4,4'''di(2-butyl-octoxy-1)-p-quarter-phenyl)] in cyclohexane showed the satisfactory performance for a saturable absorber in contrast and transmission.

Notes: Summary We developed a new histochemical method based on endogenous oxidase activity for the detection of cutaneous nerves in guinea-pig lips. After the application of a reaction mixture containing 0.14 mM 3,3′-diaminobenzidine(DAB) and 15 mM nickel ammonium sulfate in Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.6), many blue-black sensory fibers were observed, i.e., dermal nerve fiber bundles, perifollicular plexuses, Merkel-cell endings, and Meissner-like nerve endings. The autonomic fibers of the skin were not stained. Electron microscopy revealed that the reaction product was mainly localized on mitochondrial cristae. The addition of 0.01 M sodium azide completely inhibited the reaction. This technique is simple and preferentially stains sensory nerves.

Notes: Abstract A single picosecond ultraviolet pulse has been generated based on mode-locking of a dye laser pumped by a long pulse XeCl laser to serve as the input source for a high-power ps KrF laser system. A short-pulse uv dye laser (BBQ) pumped by an additional XeCl laser was used to selectively amplify a single pulse from a mode-locked pulse train with the pulse separation of 3.2 ns. The amplified single pulse was frequency-doubled to 248 nm with the pulse duration of 20 ps.

Notes: Abstract A 180-fs UV pulse has been generated based on a hybrid synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser for a multiterawatt KrF laser system. The pulse width was measured by the single shot autocorrelation technique with the three-photon fluorescence of the XeF C-A transition. The pulse width broadening due to dispersive media was investigated. The results show that the observed pulse width broadening from 210 fs to 390 fs through the entire system is explained mostly by the linear dispersion of the optical elements for near-transform-limited input pulses.

Notes: Abstract Deformation behaviour of the recrystallized Ni3AI with non-stoichiometric and stoichiometric compositions have been investigated. Recrystallization microstructures in non-stoichiometric Ni3AI are composed of the Ll2 ordered γ′ and a small amount of the f c c disordered γ. It is shown that the large elongation of non-stoichiometric Ni3AI is due to γ-phase existing at recrystallized γt'-γ′ grain boundaries. Recrystallization microstructures in stoichiometric Ni3AI are confirmed to be a single phase of γ′. Coarse-grained stoichiometric Ni3AI shows considerable ductility, although the fine-grained compound is brittle. The ductility may be related to the low yield strength in the coarse-grained samples.

Notes: Abstract Filobasidiella neoformans, the teleomorph of Cryptococcus neoformans, was observed using electron microscopy to confirm its phyletic status. No septa were found in the basidium of F. neoformans. Mature basidiospores were encapsulated by a relatively thick cell wall. Basidiospores directly budded from the basidium without sterigma formation, and no hilar appendix was noted. A lateral component of a synaptonemal complex was observed. As for mitotic apparatus, a spherical nucleus associated organelle (NAO), 0.12 μm in diameter, was found in the hemispherical depressive area of the nuclear envelope. Therefore, this fungus seems to have both characteristics of the Holobasidiomycetidae and of the primitive Basidiomycotina such as the Teliomycetes.

Notes: Summary Microcolumn liquid chromatography (LC) combined with fast-atom-bombardment mass spectrometry (FABMS) was applied to the analysis of nonionic detergents. The porous silver filter attached to the top of the capillary fused-silica tubing worked as the interface for coupling of micro LC and FABMS.

Notes: In order to study the effects of factors governing the bioabsorption rate of polylactides, implantation tests were carried out in rabbits using various samples (20 × 10 × 2 mm3) differing in their chemical composition, residual monomer content, and molecular orientation. Copolymer samples with a higher lactic acid content showed a lower rate of absorption, whereas those with a higher unreacted monomer content were absorbed faster and showed a more drastic decrease in molecular weight. In contrast, degradation of the purified polymers was slow; the purified poly-L-lactide showed no weight change and a 50% reduction in molecular weight after 6 months of implantation. Scanning electron microscopy of the samples containing monomers showed a microporous structure extending from the surface to the inner region a few days after implantation, whereas the purified poly-L-lactide did not exhibit a microporous structural change even after 10 months of implantation.

Notes: Summary Induced peaks observed in indirect detection of nonelectrolytes in high-performance liquid chromatography are simulated. The equation representing the signal intensity of the induced peaks is derived, and it is verified by the experimental results. The peak area is proportional to (K b ′ +1) k a ′ /| a ′ —k b ′ |, where k a ′ ad k b ′ are the capacity factors of the visualization agent and the analyte, respectively.
