    Notes: The A 3Π1←X 1Σ+ laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectrum of the NeIBr van der Waals complex is reported and analyzed to extract information regarding the structure and vibrational predissociation dynamics of the complex. While no definitive geometric information regarding NeIBr is obtained, our data indicate that a linear geometry is at least plausible. The vibrational predissociation lifetimes are a strong function of A state vibrational level and range from 2.6 to 23 ps. The variation in lifetime with vibrational level is consistent with the results of previous measurements on rare gas–halogen complexes, particularly NeBr2.

    Notes: In this letter, photoluminescence results obtained from two different undoped multilayered pseudomorphic structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy are compared. Intense and spectrally narrow emission was observed from both GaAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs and AlxGa1−xAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs structures. Excitonic emission from the quantum wells was confirmed by measurements of photoluminescence excitation spectra. The intensity and temperature dependences of the photoluminescence also revealed emission arising from bound excitons and impurities in the quantum wells. Intrinsic and extrinsic emission from confined levels was confirmed by the recorded photoluminescence excitation spectra along with intensity and temperature dependences. In the asymmetric AlxGa1−xAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs structure large changes were observed in the photoluminescence intensity under continuous optical excitation which are caused by the optical excitation of defects in the ternary AlxGa1−xAs on top of the pseudomorphically grown InxGa1−xAs.

    Notes: A new hybrid structure for two-dimensional surface-emitting diode laser arrays has been demonstrated. Each hybrid array consists of linear arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs lasers, with conventional cleaved end facets, that are mounted in grooves etched in a Si substrate. The etched grooves have flat bottoms and 45° sidewalls that are coated with a highly reflecting Cr/Au layer. A hybrid array with three 4-mm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs linear laser arrays has been fabricated and tested. Approximately 10 W of peak power perpendicular to the array surface was obtained from each of the linear arrays for 11–12 A of pulsed current per array. The measured differential quantum efficiencies were 65–70%, indicating that the 45° metallized sidewalls deflect by 90° essentially all of the light emitted from the laser facets. The new approach allows for the use of integral Si heat sinks and should prove useful for fabricating large, high-power, two-dimensional laser arrays in any material system.

    Notes: In linear magnetohydrodynamic generators operating with a slag layer coating the electrode walls, highly nonuniform electrical characteristics are often observed. It is proposed that the voltage patterns in these channels are an example of chaos in a discrete spatial system. An idealized model is presented, based on the Hall effect and nonlinear resistance in the slag layer. The model, which correctly predicts observed features, exhibits complex chaotic behavior.

    Notes: ZnTe films have been grown with Zn:Te flux ratios ranging from 1 to 3.2. The highest quality films have been grown with flux ratios between 2 and 3, substrate temperatures between 300 and 325 °C, and a surface reconstruction that is a combination of c(2×2) and (2×1). Films grown under these conditions have x-ray rocking curve half-widths between 125 and 225 arcsec. Photoluminescence spectra show that the relative intensity of emission related to Zn vacancies decreases with increasing Zn:Te ratio. Picosecond photoconductivity measurements show an initial decay rate for photoexcited carriers that correlates well with other material parameters. After several hundred picoseconds, the decay rates for different samples show exponential behavior with a lifetime of approximately 675 ps.

    Notes: An electron trap of 0.3 eV depth was characterized in hydrothermally grown, single-crystal zinc oxide using deep-level transient spectroscopy. Specimens were fabricated with Ag Schottky contacts on (0001) surfaces. The capture cross section was determined to be 2.6×10−14 cm2. The defect is a native donor and is attributed to a singly ionized oxygen vacancy V•O.

    Notes: The thermal expansion of the ceramic piezoelectric material PZT Channel 5800 between 2 and 300 K is found to be anisotropic, being negative parallel to the poling direction and positive normal to this direction. The piezoelectric response is temperature dependent, decreasing significantly as the temperature is reduced.

    Notes: The beam from an electron gun was used to trace flux surfaces in the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF) torsatron. The ATF magnetic field was run steady state at 0.1 T, and the electron beam was detected optically with an image-intensified, solid-state camera when it impinged on a phosphor-coated screen. Closed flux surfaces and islands at several low-order resonances were observed. The largest island, located at the ι= 1/2 surface, was from 5 to 6 cm in width, and its presence implied the existence of magnetic field errors. To determine if these error fields could be traced to small misalignments of the magnetic coils, a device capable of accurately measuring the radial and vertical magnetic field components of individual coil sets was placed in the center of ATF. This device allowed for a determination of the precise location of each of the coils that make up the ATF coil set. No significant coil misalignments were found. A further investigation of the coil configuration led to the identification of dipole fields in the helical field coil leads as the source of the field errors. The techniques developed in making these measurements are described in the text.

    Notes: This report describes the design and operation of a diagnostic instrument used for light balance measurements in inertial fusion experiments. The instrument is a light-integrating cylinder that uses the integrating principles of the Ulbricht sphere, but which was designed to operate in a reflective illumination environment. The cylinder has been used to make measurements with both high-absorption disk targets and low-absorption foil targets, illuminated with 20–80 J of green (527-nm) light. We have also modeled the cylinder to determine its theoretical integrating performance under a variety of operating conditions. Initial sensitivity was measured at 0.4 V/J and degraded over target shot number to about 0.25 V/J. The instrument has a measurement accuracy of 10% for scattered light and an absorption measurement accuracy of 10% for strongly absorbing targets, and 30%–70% for weakly absorbing targets.
