Notes: Abstract Two electrophoretically different forms of superoxide dismutase, one of them containing manganese-protein and the other iron-protein, were detected in eleven different strains of the genus Flavobacterium. The activities of the different strains were similar to those described for other bacteria. The two molecular forms of the enzyme differed clearly with regard to activity, electrophoretic behaviour, sensitivity to cyanide and peroxide, and NaCl requirement. Both molecular forms were isolated from Flavobacterium halmephilum. Molecular mass absorption spectra, metal content, optimum pH, heat-sensitivity and stability were described.

Notes: Abstract The thermal decomposition of the interlayer complexes of homoionic samples of montmorillonite with the carbamate insecticide pirimicarb (2-dimethylamino-5, 6-dimethyl pyrimidin 4-yl-dimethyl carbamate) was studied using TG and DSC techniques. The decomposition of the organic compound was followed by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. It was observed that the thermal decomposition of pirimicarb is catalyzed by adsorption by the clay. Both the catalytic capacity of the clay and the values of the decomposition enthalpies depend on the characteristics of the interlayer cation of the montmorillonite.

Notes: Abstract The systemic induction of expression of the gene for proteinase inhibitor II after wounding different parts of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants was analysed at the RNA level. Wounding of either leaves or tubers led to an induction of expression of this gene in non-wounded upper and lower leaves as well as in the upper stem segment, whereas no expression was observed in nonwounded roots or in the lower stem segment. The signal mediating the systemic induction in nonwounded tissue must therefore be able to move both acropetally and basipetally. The systemic wound response is specific for the expression of the proteinase-inhibitor-II gene as no influence was observed for the expression of genes encoding the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase and the tuber storage protein patatin which were examined in parallel with the proteinase-inhibitor-II gene.

Notes: Summary Starch and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of seven isozyme systems was investigated as a means of identifying wild and cultivated species of Avena with different ploidy levels. By examining the characteristic isoenzymatic patterns, it was shown that there was considerable variability within the different species. However, it was nevertheless possible to unequivocally identify the species of wild oats and to distinguish between the different species belonging to the same genomic set, thus providing a definitive reference technique for the identification of Avena species in seed-testing laboratories. The relationships between Avena species were inferred from the electrophoresis data. The divergence of the A. maroccana — A. murphyi complex and its contribution to the AACC genomes are emphasized.

Notes: Summary The purine nucleosides (adenosine, guanosine, inosine, xanthosine) are formed when the corresponding purine bases and D-ribose are heated together in the presence of certain salts and minerals. The salts remaining after the evaporation of seawater are particularly effective in these syntheses. The relevance of these reactions for prebiological evolution is discussed.

Notes: Summary Base composition analysis has been carried out for the two major ribosomal RNA components extracted from ribosomes of plants and animals of various taxonomic position. The high degree of change undergone by these molecules during evolution is evident from the results obtained. Moreover, the evolutionary pattern of therRNA base composition well reflects the phylogenetic relationships of the various taxonomic groups.
