Abstract If nonpolar liquids are irradiated with relatively high doses of ionizing radiation, the decay of the charged intermediates (solvent cations, electrons and molecular secondary ions) involves a considerable portion of homogeneous recombination. Therefore, the often used single ion pair concept fails in describing the experimentally observed concentration-time behaviour. In this paper a modified concept is presented, which takes into account reactions between charged intermediates generated in different ionization events or spurs already from the beginning and in this way enables a realistic and continuous description also for higher ion concentrations.
