Notes: Summary The substitution patterns of methyl cellulose as well as of a thexyldimethylsilyl cellulose after permethylation were determined by hydrolysis and separation of the resulting partially methylated glucoses without further derivatization by h.p.l.c.. On an amine-modified silica column the solutes get separated into glucose, 2,3,6-tri-O-methyl glucose and the groups of mono-O-methyl-and di-O-methyl glucoses. A chromatographic run on a reversed-phase column enables the identification of the single mono-O-methyl- and di-O-methyl glucoses. In this way, a determination of both the average degree of substitution and the substitution pattern of cellulose derivatives is possible. Comparison of the results with those obtained by standard methylation analysis including g.l.c.-m.s. proves the correctnes of the method employed.

Notes: Abstract Daily precipitation amounts show spatial variation over sub-continential regions. Point measurements, representative for regions of land, have to be interpolated towards unobserved locations. In this study four days in 1984 were selected to investigate the spatial variability of daily precipitation amount in North-western Europe in relation to the meteorological conditions. Data were interpolated using Kriging. Crossvalidation was used to compare interpolated values with measured values. Large differences in the spatial structure of daily precipitation amount are obsered as a result of different meterological conditions. Stratification of the study area into a coastal, a mountainous and an interior stratum proved to be successful, reducing the Mean Squared Error of Prediction with up to 55%.

Notes: Abstract The results of competitive and relative rate studies for various silicon hydrides and vinylmethylsiloxane compounds are presented. For example, the competitive reaction of bis(trimethylsiloxy)methylsilane with vinylpentamethyldisiloxane (A) and divinyltetramethyldisiloxane (B) show that B reacts preferentially; however, the relative rate of reaction is greater for A than B. Mechanistic aspects of hydrosilylation are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Silicone release coatings are used by the pressure-sensitive adhesive industry for labeling applications. A background discussion of silicone release coatings is presented. Methodology for determining the network structure of photolytically cured systems prepared by the cationic ring opening polymerization of an epoxy silicone fluid is described. Under typical polymerization conditions, these networks contain no unreached epoxides and have very low degrees of polymerization (D p), indicating that termination is competitive with propagation. A method has also been developed to determine the network structure of thermally cured systems prepared by the platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation of silicone vinyl compounds with silicone hydrides. The nature of the cross-links and the types of residual functionality have been determined and the systems have been shown to undergo a postcure.

Notes: Abstract Three different feeds: methanol, methanol/ethanol/water (2 ∶ 1 ∶ 1 molar ratio) and13C-methanol/ethanol/water (2 ∶ 1 ∶ 1) have been converted to hydrocarbons over a SAPO-34 catalyst at 420 °C using argon carrier gas. The products were analyzed by GC-MS allowing the determination of the isotopic composition of the reaction products. The experiments show that the majority of the propene molecules are formed directly from methanol, and that only a minor part is formed by methylation of ethene.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes how the scenario aggregation principle can be combined with approximate solutions of the individual scenario problems, resulting in a computationally efficient algorithm where two individual Lagrangian-based procedures are merged into one. Computational results are given for an example from fisheries management. Numerical experiments indicate that only crude scenario solutions are needed.

Notes: Abstract This short note discusses some structural properties of the progressive hedging algorithm. It is based on the finite case, but allows for event trees that are unbalanced and where the nodes can have a varying number of children. Generic procedures and a generic record definition for the algorithms are presented.
