Notes: Abstract The production of the neutral strange particlesK 0, Λ and $$\bar \Lambda $$ invp and $$\bar vp$$ charged current interactions is studied in an experiment with the Big European Bubble Chamber. Mean multiplicities are measured as a function of the event variablesE v,W 2 andQ 2 and of the hadron variablesx F,z andp T 2 .K *± (892) and∑ *± (1385) signals are observed, whereas there is no evidence for∑ *- (1385) production invp scattering. Forward, backward and total mean multiplicities are found to compare well with the predictions of an empirical model for deep-inelastic reactions in the case of the strange mesonsK 0 andK *± (892) but less so for the strange baryons Λ, $$\bar \Lambda $$ and∑ *± (1385). The strange baryon multiplicities are used to obtain the decuplet to octet baryon production ratio and to assess the probabilities of auu orud system to break up.

Notes: Abstract We report some laser-cooling effects in a few172Yb+ ions held in a Paul trap. Pronounced cloud-to-crystal phase transitions have been observed as discontinuities in the Yb+ fluorescence spectrum of the 369 nm cooling transition. The first reported two-dimensional images of Yb+ clouds with evidence of crystal structure have been recorded using a photon-counting position-sensitive detector. An ion temperature of 100 mK has been estimated from the size of a single ion image. Step-wise cooling of a re-heated, few-ion Yb+ cloud was also observed.

Notes: Abstract 172Yb+ ions in an rf trap have been laser cooled for the first time by driving the 2 S 1/2–2 P 1/2 transition at 369.5 nm. It was necessary to irradiate the ions with 2.438 μm infra-red radiation to depopulate the metastable 2 D 3/2 state. An upper limit on ion energies was determined by observing the size of the trapped cloud and corresponds to a temperature below 2 K. Cooled ion lineshapes were compared with simulations and coherence nulls were observed in the infra-red frequency scans.

Notes: Abstract Factors related to pathogenesis were studied in a murine model of pulmonary fungal infection with strains of Blastomyces dermatitidis. Strain 26199V was ⩾105-fold more lethal in pulmonary challenge than strain GA-1. This relationship between the two strains also occurred after intraperitoneal challenge. Serial studies with lung cultures and histology of sacrificed animals after pulmonary challenge with similar doses, and challenge studies in mice of differing maturity, indicated GA-1 is impaired in initial replication in situ, although the two strains grow equally well in the presence of murine substrates in vitro. In vitro studies indicated the two strains were indistinguishable in most studies of biochemical and metabolic markers, and in studies with chemical and physical inhibitors. The exceptions were their morphologic appearance in the yeast phase, ability to hydrolyze esculin, and susceptibility to crystal violet dye and bile. The last finding and previous work suggested possible differences in lipid content; these were confirmed in studies which also included two other strains. Greater phospholipid and palmitic acid content were associated with greater virulence.

Notes: Abstract This is an experimental study on gas bubble motion in a vertical temperature gradient. Surface tension convection (Marangoni convection) superimposing gravity is discussed with respect to the theory of Young et al. as another cause for bubble motion. The Marangoni numbers for the convection inside the bubble (N i Ma) and outside the bubble in the medium (N e Ma) are introduced as criterion for the applicability of the theory. It is shown by the experiments that the Young theory holds up to Marangoni numbersN i Ma=10−2 and Ne Ma=2, respectively.

Notes: Abstract In the GHz range, sound attenuation in polycrystalline films is dominated by elastic scattering at the grain boundaries. The attenuation by the much smaller absorption is hidden in the whole attenuation. We present a first attempt to detect the absorption. Sound-pulse experiments were done at low temperatures at frequencies of 8.8 GHz and 24 GHz in wedge-shaped Cu and Ag films using the method of multiple-beam interferometry with a lateral movable, highly collimated sound beam. The absorption heat is detected by recording the power of the second sound pulses emitted into the surrounding superfluid helium. The absorption coefficients can be obtained by fitting the measured interferograms to a proposed scattering model. They are many orders of magnitude lower than the measured attenuation coefficients, but are comparable with the predictions of Pippard.

Notes: Abstract Networks can be understood as organizational control strategies. As an example, we present two case studies of team-based networking strategies associated with the Total Quality Management movement in the United States. TQM's implied social contract requires some form of power sharing. In practice TQM team organization can also become another form of labor intensification. Similarly, TQM appeals to democratic values by emphasizing participation, communication, cooperation and team work. Such claims can also serve to legitimize major organizational changes, some of which follow familiar Taylorist patterns. Two cases illustrate how the technical components of communications systems help redefine control systems in TQM-based work rerganization experiments. In the manufacturing setting, communications took the form of web-and-hub networks, centralizing off-site engineering control of production workers. In the design and engineering workplace, peer-to-peer communications implemented by self-managed teams reduced intellectual ‘slack time’. In both cases the communications systems provided means to intensify labor.

Notes: Abstract This analysis is based on data from neutrino and antineutrino scattering on hydrogen and deuterium, obtained with BEBC in the (anti) neutrino wideband beam of the CERN SPS. The parton momentum distributions in the proton and the proton structure functions are determined in the range 0.01〈x〈0.7 and 2 GeV2 〈Q 2〈100 GeV2 by fitting suitable parametrisations to the experimentalx−y−Q 2-distributions. The QCD predictions are taken into account using the Altarelli-Parisi equations, with a resulting scale parameter $$\Lambda = \left( {192 \pm 40(stat.) \pm {}_{108}^{222} (syst.)} \right)MeV.$$

Notes: Abstract Based on a QCD analysis of the parton momentum distributions in the proton, the ratior v =d v /u v of thed andu valence quark distributions is determined as function ofx in the range 0.01〈x〈0.7. The analysis uses data from neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions on hydrogen and deuterium, obtained with BEBC in the (anti)neutrino wideband beam of the CERN SPS. Since v mainly depends on the deuterium/hydrogen ratios of the normalisedx-y-Q 2-distributions many systematic effects cancel. It is found thatr v decreases with increasingx, and drops below the naiveSU(6) expectation of 0.5 forx≳0.3. An extrapolation ofr v tox=1 is consistent with the hypothesisr v (1)=0.
