Notizen: A finite element formulation which includes the piezoelectric or electroelastic effect is given. A strong analogy is exhibited between electric and elastic variables, and a ‘stiffness’ finite element method is deduced. The dynamical matrix equation of electroelasticity is formulated and found to be reducible in form to the well-known equation of structural dynamics, A tetrahedral finite element is presented, implementing the theorem for application to problems of three-dimensional electroelasticity.

Notizen: A concise and efficient algorithm is presented for deriving finite element shape functions from an arbitrary set of independent functions. Based on special one-dimensional interpolatory schemes derived via the algorithm, a variety of two- and three-dimensional interpolatory schemes are developed which are useful for modelling singular behaviour. The methodology presented is general and may be fruitfully applied to the development of ‘special’ finite element shape functions for a variety of other situations.

Notizen: A new finite element procedure is introduced for the analysis of nearly-incompressible media. The approach may be simply implemented by a small change of the standard technique, and is applicable to arbitrary anisotropic and/or nonlinear media. The procedure is shown to specialize to the selective integration and mean-dilatation formulations under appropriate hypothesis.

Notizen: An improved algorithm is presented for integrating rate constitutive equations in large-deformation analysis. The algorithm is shown to be ‘objective’ with respect to large rotation increments.

Notizen: The propagation and decay of acoustic waves in exterior domains in an essential ingredient in the study of fluid-structure interaction. A strategy must be devised to compute solutions over domains which are unbounded. Exact impedance conditions at an artificial external boundary are specified by the DtN method, yielding an equivalent problem that is suitable for domain-based computation. The DtN boundary condition is non-reflective, giving rise to exact (and thereby unique) solutions. The truncated DtN operator, which is employed in practice, fails to inhibit the reflection of higher modes, so that non-unique solutions may occur at their harmonics. Simple expressions determine a sufficient number of terms in the truncated operator for unique solutions at any given wave number. There are three characteristic length scales in the computational problem: the radius of the artificial boundary, the geometry of the body (represented by the internal boundary) and the mesh size. Numerical studies examine the dependence of the conditioning of finite element coefficient matrices on the number of terms in the truncated DtN operator vs. the wave number non-dimensionalized by each of the length scales. Analytic results regarding the number of terms sufficient for unique solutions are confirmed. As long as this criterion is respected, no upper limit on the allowable wave number is detected. A local approximation of the boundary conditions restores uniqueness for all wave numbers.

Notizen: We present solutions for the effective stress induced by gas flow through a porous solid into a borehole resulting from sudden pressure reduction. Tensile effective stress that exceeds the strength of the solid will lead to borehole failure. This has applications to the intentional creation of cavities, relevant to the efficient recovery of coalbed methane, and the avoidance of borehole stability problems in conventional gas production.

Beschreibung: Rasmussen's encephalitis is a progressive childhood disease of unknown cause characterized by severe epilepsy, hemiplegia, dementia, and inflammation of the brain. During efforts to raise antibodies to recombinant glutamate receptors (GluRs), behaviors typical of seizures and histopathologic features mimicking Rasmussen's encephalitis were found in two rabbits immunized with GluR3 protein. A correlation was found between the presence of Rasmussen's encephalitis and serum antibodies to GluR3 detected by protein immunoblot analysis and by immunoreactivity to transfected cells expressing GluR3. Repeated plasma exchanges in one seriously ill child transiently reduced serum titers of GluR3 antibodies, decreased seizure frequency, and improved neurologic function. Thus, GluR3 is an autoantigen in Rasmussen's encephalitis, and an autoimmune process may underlie this disease.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Rogers, S W -- Andrews, P I -- Gahring, L C -- Whisenand, T -- Cauley, K -- Crain, B -- Hughes, T E -- Heinemann, S F -- McNamara, J O -- NS17771/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- NS28709/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- NS30990R29/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Jul 29;265(5172):648-51.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Salt Lake City Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, UT.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8036512" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Hemolysin of Escherichia coli is activated by fatty acylation of the protoxin, directed by the putative acyl transferase HlyC and by acyl carrier protein (ACP). Mass spectrometry and Edman degradation of proteolytic products from mature toxin activated in vitro with tritium-labeled acylACP revealed two fatty-acylated internal lysine residues, lysine 564 and lysine 690. Resistance of the acylation to chemical treatments suggested that fatty acid was amide linked. Substitution of the two lysines confirmed that they were the only sites of acylation and showed that although each was acylated in the absence of the other, both sites were required for in vivo toxin activity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Stanley, P -- Packman, L C -- Koronakis, V -- Hughes, C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Dec 23;266(5193):1992-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Pathology, Cambridge University, UK.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7801126" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: Inbreeding is known to lead to decreased survival and reproduction in captive populations of animals. It is also important to know whether inbreeding has deleterious effects in natural habitats. An estimate was made of the effects of inbreeding in white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis, derived from a wild population. This study demonstrates that inbreeding had a significant detrimental effect on the survivorship of mice reintroduced into a natural habitat. This effect was more severe than the effect observed in laboratory studies of the population.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Jimenez, J A -- Hughes, K A -- Alaks, G -- Graham, L -- Lacy, R C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1994 Oct 14;266(5183):271-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biological Sciences, University of Illinois-Chicago 60680.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7939661" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
